Why don't these manufacturers just take the best features from their old models and throw out all the crap. That's what makes the best ones even better. And it doesn't cost too much.
I just bought a Tecsun Pl990x , I’m waiting for it in the mail. The portable DSP radios seem to all have bad sync detection but the analog radios have good sync detection. I don’t use sync detection much and hope there will be no other issues. I love listening to hams talking and to CW. Good luck everyone ! 😃👍🏻📻
880 didn’t even publicise its synchronous detection, you had to hold down the upper side band or lower side band button. From what I have seen it isn’t great either. I think it was the Sony 2010D that has the best synchronous detection. I wonder what the new Tecsun H5o1 will bring to the table apart from stereo speakers? Eton E1 synchronise detection is meant to be good however it is getting hard to find a working E1. Loving your show still. Thanks.
I agreed. SONY ICF-2001D/2010 does have the very best of synchronous detection that truly improves reception quality, superior to that found in Drake R8, Lowe HF-150, JRC NRD-545 DSP and all other portable siblings. That said. This one in Tecsun PL-990x sounds better in SYNC mode than my Eton Grundig Executive Satellite which is a fine DSP receiver in its own right that rarely needs the SYNC mode.
I agree the SYNC detection is also horrible on the PL-880. The more I see of this radio, good and bad...it really seems that it’s just slightly revamped PL-880. For me the PL-880 I have is a fantastic radio overall so I would think the PL-990 is just as good as the 880. The tuning on the 880/990x is just awesome if your more used to a tabletop type receiver. But as of now from all I’ve seen anyway, I really am not seeing much difference between the 880 and the 990. Great video Gilles and very informative! It’s videos like these that help so many people make an informed purchase. 73 de Nick K9XN
Nicholas Hyer - To me the biggest difference between the 880 and the 990x is the mp3 player and the Bluetooth functionality. Now, if they had included a recording feature with the mp3 then that would have been enough justification for purchasing the 990x over a 880. But they didn’t and it’s a real shame. (The mp3 is working off a SD card so that’s a natural to support a recording feature. Really upset that it’s not there.)
Well, it is one thing to trust your expertise, but it would be even better, if we would get the chance to judge ourself. A side by side comparison for example or to her more stations on different times of the day and other bands.
Hi, when i press synch detection, the ssb activates as well ... this makes a kind of clear station (apart the signal drops) to hear like inside a pipe & this seems is because it mess around with usb/ssb which not need in this case ... or am i wrong? ... is any way to avoid the ssb mode in synch detection? many thanks
Sync works using USB LSB this the way it does work.. remember you have to press the button and hold ... just a quick press does not put it in sync detection
I was going to suggest the same thing. Isn’t that his “zero beat“ setting? My Sony ICF-2010 allows you to adjust the sync detector and depending on which way you turn the dial it uses upper versus lower side band for the synchronous detector. I agree on both counts that the 680s sync detector is awesome and the 880s is horrendous. Also, I have four Sony radios with synchronous detection and they are all awesome.
Like a lot of previous commenters, I think this has confirmed my decision to not get this radio. I have the PL880 and you would realistically think that Tecsun would improve the sync detection from that one. Doesnt really justify the hefty price tag.
Your findings certainly correlate with other reviews regarding the sync. A real disappointment that Tecsun couldn't improve the sync. It certainly rules me out of buying one. The Sync on my 660 is really not far off the one found on the legendary Sony ICF-2010/2001D.
hello hope you keeping well love the videos have a pl880 tecsun audio is great sync is crap but to be fair its a hidden feature so its not to judge this radio on this unlike the 990x if they got it right on 660 i cant understand why not on the 990x and also that radio is not set right from factory its off freqency on ssb zero beat it should not be 80 hertz of tune its not up to you to set it they should have done it
My friend, I have a pl680 and I never use a synchro detector because I have had many attempts to use it and it always ended in failure. This synchro detector never helped me, but only made it worse. Therefore, this is a useless function at least for 990 at least for 680.
Hello. Yes.thankyou. i will not purchase this radio because of its poor sync.so thanks for the info. I have a pl 660 and the sync is excellent. And my 19 yr. Old sony 7600 gr. Has a great sync also. As always i look forward to your opinion. Best regards. Ron. Z.
Im surprised Tecsun can get it right on one model and ruin it on the other. Could it be caused externally by the state of the atmosphere? Keep testing the sync feature to make sure its not working as it should.
Can you feature the sync detection of the 680 side by side that of the 990x, so that we can understand what good sync detection is?
I will
@@OfficialSWLchannel Thanks Gilles.

Pl 660 and 680 are now the best regarding SYNC feature...I am having a 660 and I am pleased to have it.
I guess no radio is perfect.

love your channel, can you get the new sangean 909x2 to compare? thx
Have you ever try to set the SYNC and reduce the ANT GAIN Reduce from DX to NORM?
Qual a versão do firmware do seu 990x ?

Would it lock better if you fine tune to .08kHz? Wait... Is that even allowed in SyncAM mode?

the off frequency does not bother me as I can calibrate it

Maybe they can fix it by rolling out a firmware update, because they can do better as shown on this radios predecessors.
