  • A rundown of the kit I use as a Film (also known as a Unit) Stills Photographer.
    I am not affiliated with any of the brands mentioned, but give an honest opinion as to why each piece of kit has found a place in my bag.

    This is a great video! There are not many videos about stills photographers on UA-cam. Please keep it going! Thanks for the video

    Good first effort Rob! You seemed very natural and relaxed, and explained everything well. I would love to hear more about life as a unit stills photographer - the pros and cons, pitfalls and triumphs!

    I´m planning something similar with my own gear, it was interesting and inspiring to see this video. The charger hub is something I´m gonna copy from You!

    Awesome video. I was just listening to a B&H video about Still Photography and it peaked my curiosity but it does look like a very dedicated life choice though most gear is the same for most photographers. It's good to know my options.

    Great video and newsletter Rob. That Fuji setup with belt clips seems ideal.
    I'd love to break into the Unit Stills game but am struggling to find any low budget jobs listed. Do you have any tips on how to find some unpaid work in the industry to build experience and get a foot in the door? Thank you in advance. I'll be sure to keep an eye on your channel.

      Hi Luke, I thought I had written a reply, clearly, it didn't upload from my phone. Thanks for your comment, i'll be doing a review of the belt clips soon, check out www.peakdesign.com/, they are super useful.
      My advice would be to keep shooting, get on set in any capacity so you can learn the nuances and jargon of being in that environment and think about what makes a striking publicity image, what will sell that short film or that student film project.
      Lastly, don't get lost in all the gear and tech, I'm super guilty of this myself, but for every pound (euro/dollar/yen) you spend on camera gear you should spend twice that on going to galleries, buying books and travelling to take photos.
      Getting on set is hard, email people that you like the work of directly or even send a letter, and don't give up, politely pester them until they have to take notice.
      Thanks for watching,
      Rob

    Great first video Rob, I have just graduated from FDA Photography and looking at getting into a photographic career. Any tips on how I would get into this kind of genre?

    This was sooo good!! Does that blimp double for water protection - like if you had to go underwater for a scene?! Amazing

    • @robyoungsonphotography8397
      @robyoungsonphotography8397  2 роки тому

      It doesn’t! But it’s from the same company that makes underwater housings, Aquatech. It offers good weather protection and protection from dirt and debris during SFX explosions on set though.

    Hey, so this is a bit of a late question. But I am currently starting film stills photography, I don't have a mirrorless camera and not the current budget to get one. Is using a blimp still the norm? And would it be doable to make one myself?

    I'm an amateur photographer and I've been given the opportunity to go onto a film set to do some photography for a film company who are shooting a promo for an up and coming crime series for TV. Having never done anything like this before what advice would you give i.e what lenses should I think about using, do I just snap away or will I be given a set type of photos to take? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Great video!
    I’m about to do my first stills shoot with the xt2. Do you use the electronic shutter normally, and use the blimp when you have action scenes? I want to use the electronic shutter to stay silent but I’m worried about banding. Any help appreciated!

    • @robyoungsonphotography8397
      @robyoungsonphotography8397  2 роки тому

      I haven’t used a blimp in over 2 years now. I’m going to do a new video to replace this one soon, I shoot Nikon Mirrorless now. The XT2 should be fine in most situations, if you get banding, adjust your angle to the light source and try shooting at 125th of a second if you can. The banding is much better managed on the newer Nikons and the top tier Sony’s. But I managed with the xt2 just fine for a long while.

      My very first was a 1 megapixel Pentax. The first setup I had when taking photography seriously would have been the Nikon D5000 and a kit lens.
