Yes, the video is about wide angle composition and it’s great but there is another issue here. Freebies! I don’t know whether Nigel’s Hasselblad equipment was a freebie or purchased with his own money. If it was his own purchase then good for him. If it was a freebie then I have sufficient of an old-fashioned puritanical streak to think shame on him. I think the likes of Heaton, Popsys and Hardcastle, possibly Danson, accepting mega-expensive freebies is no different from our glorious Prime Minister (I’m from the UK) accepting £30k’s worth of clothes, shoes, tickets to Taylor Swift concerts for which he has been rightly derided. I think it’s time for me to start unsubscribing from a few UA-cam channels!

Your attention to composition detail simply blows my mind. Granted, I've been thinking about things like this for thirty seconds, after just pointing and shooting with high-end hobbyist gear for thirty years, but already, you've raised me from novitiate to acolyte just from watching your amazing work, with care. In only weeks, you've transformed my shots from "Our trip to Yellowstone, 1973" slide show into "Wow Dad, those are amazing!" No doubt, Lightroom is a HUGE difference maker, but GIGO, right?

Thanks Nigel for sharing your advice about wide angle lenses. Like you mentioned it’s not easy, but I´m trying to shoot more and more at wide angle (I prefer long focals, so it’s a total opposite for me).
Beside, I don’t get it why there is so much angry reactions in the comments, just because he is toying with an Hasselblad? As long as the 25min of video, I didn’t noticed it was about a sponsoring. He could use any other camera brands, the subject was « wide angle shot ». And that’s precisely what was coverded in this video. It the only reason I follow photograpers like him: they talk about their passion for photography first, and camera gear in second.

Dear Nigel, I have 2 books of yours which show in practice what you explain in this video. But the video is required and is excellent in so far as it helps photographers to understand and learn what is essential in order to develop their skills: What do I need to do, what do I need to watch out for in order to become a good landscape photographer? How can I even improve a landscape composition which is already a good one? You have done a great job in showing and explaining all these things in relarively little time and in a highly understandable way.

Hi Nigel, the right moment to get good tips from you in handling foregrounds using a wide angle lens. A few months ago I bought a Z6III and a Z 6 17-28 mm F2.8 lens. This lens was a real discovery of experimenting with perspectives, as I normally use the Z6 and the Z 24-70 f4, and the Z 24-200 f 4-6.3. Your story now confirms my interest in widening perspectives by going closer to the foreground and telling othere stories with my landscape images. Bert.

It is called ‘free speech’ and simple observation. Have you not noticed how many UA-cam photographers have suddenly been loaned a Hasselblad to use? It is a camera way outside the pockets of most people who watch these channels. It is a shame that the photographers don’t concentrate on producing videos that improve people’s photography more, rather than using gear which the majority cannot afford. Having said that, Nigel Danson is not particularly ‘gear’ oriented, but as a general rule, critical comments are valid.

No whining about that, but as soon as the Hasselblad was introduced people turn into children, crying like crazy. It's hilarious, that camera is "out of reach" for me too but I just don't see what the problem is!? No it isn’t! UA-cam photographers make a lot of money, and seem to be able to buy ridiculously expensive cameras or get them given to them. They pretend that they are making videos to help us with our hobby with our modest equipment, but it is all a front to expand their subscribers and income. Personally I am sick of it and I am going unsubscribe to most of those I have been following for years. I will only watch those who actually believe in taking ‘photographs’ and not producing a comedy video or introducing, yet again, 5 more ‘tricks’ to help us take photos!

Well done for gaining support from Hasselblad. I fully understand that UA-cam and photography is your job providing you and your family with the income that this provides….
However I no longer see the point in watching vlogs using high ticket items such as Hassleblad XD2’s or whatever. The explorer is roughly £12750.00, add the lens you’re talking about then add on another £6500.00. So getting advice on using £19500.00 worth of kit is a bit pointless for the vast majority.

I’m just curious, those of you who are so upset about the Hasselblads, do you stop watching your favorite sports figure when they get top of the line equipment? I’m thinking probably not. So, why be so upset when these pro photographers get top notch gear? Again, just curious. I know that if someone gave me the same clubs as Tiger Woods, I wouldn’t be able to play like him. The equipment doesn’t make the athlete just as it doesn’t make the photographer. Dedication, passion and hard work make the individuals who they are in their field. Not the equipment. Would it be nice? Yes. But it’s not a necessity. These UA-camrs work hard to put out videos, they’ve earned the recognition. I’m sure I will get lambasted for my opinion, but I am allowed to have one.
Thanks for the great video Nigel!!

@@timothykieperWhile I do agree with you on the sports field being way, way overpaid, I can’t say that I agree with your sentiment in this situation. These guys are just trying to make a living while at the same time providing us with education in the photography field, at no cost to us. If you go to a sports event, (which I don’t) it is anything but free. I see it as though these guys are getting paid from sponsors/vendors instead of us as viewers.
      Thanks for the reply. 🙂

I would like to know if you can keep the Hasselblad lens? Some famous UA-cam photographers got Hasselblad gear for free in the the last weeks. So Anthony Gugliotta (unboxing my dream camera). He communicated clearly that he could keep the Hasselblad camera, etc. If that‘s in your case the same, I think we should know for transparency reasons.

The fist shot is perfect! I think we can overthink shots too much. It would be great on any media advertising the Lake District. So many wide-angle shots overemphasise the foreground and look weird, your first shot looks ‘normal’ - just as you almost might see it with your eyes. But overall the video makes us focus on composition, which is the most important thing in a pleasing photo.
And as another comment has said, “please, no more Hasselblads”!

I’m not worried about the Hasselblad. It’s unlikely I’ll ever be splashing out on a Z8 never mind a Hasselblad but I haven’t heard too many complaints about photographers using high end full frame cameras, it’s just what you’d expect a pro to be using. I think it’s interesting to learn about different cameras and formats even if I’m not using them myself and I think Nigel’s tips are very helpful and would apply whatever camera you are using. But Nigel you did say something at the beginning about mentioning differences in focus between medium format, full frame and APS-C which would have been interesting and I don’t think you actually covered it later.
