I am also a 57 year old woman with a Dyson DC20 - never thought I would be able to replace the motor, save myself the cost of a new Dyson and save the old one from landfill - thank you Alec for the inspiration!
Hi, I love my Dyson DC19, I've had it years. The horror this week when it started to smoke and conked out. I like others thought of the expense of replacing it but then I came across your video. I ordered the motor that came today, £18.00 from Ebay. Your an absolute star. You made it easy to follow your instructions from beginning to end. I've never done this before and you made it stress free. I am a 63 year old woman who is very impressed with myself😁. Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH 😊👍 X
As a 57 year old woman, I appreciated your tutorial and I was able to successfully put a new motor in my Dyson D20. Thank you very much Alec.
Thank you so much. I am a 61 year old woman who lives on her own and with your guidance replaced the motor on my Dyson! So proud of myself and thankful to you for the brilliant guidance!!!
Just watched and then re-watched pausing at each stage and have successfully replaced motor. Thank you so much for sharing. One very happy female! Woop woop!
Mine broke down without this video I would of been lost in the woods with no sense of direction! Thank you so much sir! 👏 👏
Great video. Perfect level detail without any waffling on. Ended up buying my motor and filters from you guys because of this video. Vacuum all back together and working again ready to serve us for another 10 years.
Really helpful & very easy to follow tutorial. My DC19 motor blew up, I watched this & decided to try a repair myself. Cost me £27 for a new motor & filter kit & my DC19 is now better than it’s ever been & saved a big repair bill or buying another vacuum. Thank you 👍
May I ask you where you both your parts in the UK?
thank you so much for this video. Replaced the motor and our cylinder DC19 is working again. Instructions are perfect. Never done anything like this before!
Thank you Alec - sure beats discarding an expensive machine or paying the extortionate Dyson service fees and shipment charges. Pure gold.
Wow, this is an amazingly helpful video. Everything went smoothly except when I tried to put the cover back on. However, I went back to the video and Alec had all the answers - seat the cord reel properly and make sure there are no wires trapped between the casing pieces. Thank you!
You sir just saved me a whole lot of money. Flawless video with detailed step-by-step explanations; it doesn't get any better. Thank you a million times
You, Sir, are a legend. That was so easy to do! And saved me £100. Thank you
I am a novice and attempted this.
Supremely explained...
I successfully changed the motor and replaced the filters ... the motor was £16 - estimate from repairing dealer £80/90.
Many grateful thanks ... Darlington U.K.
I join the others in commending you for this video. I replaced the motor on my DC19. The most important thing is that this way you helped me reduce waste and help just a tiny bit our poor planet
Great tutorial. Goes through the process , and as well gives tips for every hickup you might encounter.
Thank you Alec :) I talked the wife into getting a replacement motor rather than another vacuum cleaner. It was an easy replacement to do thanks to your video :)
11 year old dc19 was heading to the skip til I found this video! Vacuum is working like new! Thanks!
Thanks Mate, appreciated that your presentation was easy and straight forward, no hitches, hope someone sponsors a camera for you, all the best from New Zealand.
Thanks. You saved us from throwing out an expensive machine. It was so easy to replace the motor after watching your explanation.
Thanks for your video. My DC20 died last week and I was able to repair it following your clear instructions. A new motor is cheaper than a new dyson
Alec, you're a star! Got my DC19 free from Gumtree with same symptoms as yours. Now 2 weeks on, and an outlay of only £16, I have a working DC19 and loads of Brownie Points from my wife!
Thanks for your great video. Bought myself a new motor and now it's working like a breeze again 😃👍.
Give this guy a Go Pro. He is so helpful. Love the accent.
Absolute legend just saved me £80 from my local hoover repair shop parts cost me under £20 amazing
Alec, thank you very much for your easy to follow, step-by-step instruction on replacing my DC19 motor. It was so easy to follow and the Dyson worked first time. You are a star. V Thompson
Brilliant!! You saved us so much money.Step by step explanation .Great video.
Thank you! Your video helped me change the motor on my old DC19db, which I believe is at least 20 years old - had never changed or cleaned the filters (oops! have done now) but goes to show how hardy the old models are!
Fantastic, probably saved me around £100 getting the motor replaced by a vacuum shop, excellent info and instructions. Cheers
Excellent tutorial. I've just replaced the motor and filters and it's good as new! Thanks Alec!
I am from Germany and have just changed the engine of the DC19. It was very simple. Thank you for the instructions.
I've watched loads of tutorial videos but I think this one is the best so far - really easy to listen to and follow - I love my very old Dyson and now it's good as new again. Thank you
Within a hour the motor was replaced. Thanks for the step by step video. Also put some silicon oil within the wheel barrings. Now is "runs" smoothly
Just changed the motor of my DC19 and found this video amazingly simple to follow. MANY MANY THANKS
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have just repaired my Dyson DC29 with your help and it works fine again :) best regards from Germany :D
Brilliant video Alex. I love my DC19 even though I only bought it for £35 on eBay over five years ago! I was gutted when the brushes made THAT smell, but I've brought my machine back to life again and it's better than ever! Thank you.
@Bouw Huche Hello there - sorry I didn't see this until now. I bought the replacement motor from Amazon, part number 'B00FP14QSQ', description 'Kenley YDK Motor for Dyson DC05/ DC08/ DC11/ DC19/ DC20/ DC21/ DC29 Vacuum Cleaner Series, 240 V'. I replaced the filters as well, and bought this from Amazon as well, part number 'B00EV2J5D6', description 'First4spares Washable Pre Motor Filters and Post Motor Allergy HEPA Filters Kit For Dyson DC19 DC20 DC29 Vacuum Cleaners (2 of Each)'. My machine is as good as new!
Alec, thank you very much, my wife was going to buy a new Dyson for £200, with your excellent video , I did it and it myself and it cost me with all the parts, postage and, special screw driver £26
Worked a treat, new motor finally arrived today and fitted in approx 20 mins, thank you!
Thank you so much for this video, repaired my DC19 in less than half an hour. got a practiacally new one for the price of 38 € for a new motor from Amazon instead of buying a new Dyson. Love the machine, it's easy to work with, lives long (my first motor lasted well above 10 years) and is, as I found now, easy to repair.
Thank you so much for the excellent and easy to follow presentation, everything went very easily except it took 3 attempts in the cord alignment and then I found I had to redo everything again because I didn't clean the carbon from the motor housing which was just an oversight, best of luck with sponsers.
Great video. Our old faithful Dyson is back up and running thanks to the motor we bought from VacuumSpot and this easy to follow video. Thanks Alec!
You made this so easy to follow, great job, saved me from buying a new DC19, thank you.
Sir you are a star!
I just repaired my DC19 thank you!
Wish you all the best! :)
Thank you, that’s just saved us £230. Really straightforward instructions and simple to do.
Great help, super easy to follow. Thanks from Ireland
Im not a dyson fan as I think they are heavy and expensive. But I am impressed how easy it is to replace the electric motor amazing.
Me too. They’re over engineered and expensive. I now use Henry vacuum cleaners.
Thanks for your post. It was very clear and comprehensive. My vacuum lives again with its new motor. Well done.
Really well explained. Only hitch I hit was getting the switch to sit back in properly - seemed to fit and then popped out after a few seconds. If you get that, you need to re-sit the switch. When you get it right it sits tight! A huge help, thanks.
This guy is a legend, got motor fitted saved heeps wife happy more golf, cheers mate
You've just saved me £95 - bought bits ( motor and filters ) and did it myself. Thanks.
Awesome video, thanks! I had no idea how to diagnose and replace a faulty motor in my DC19, this tutorial was very informative and easy to follow. Keep up the great work guys! 😁
Thank You! Clear, concise, complete, well filmed and all-showing video! Much Appreciated!
Thank you very much. Needed to disensemble my machine to clean it after two years and your video helped me a lot.
Thanks! Your explanation is very very clear! My Dyson DC20 is working properly again!
Totally cool. Fixed my DC20...keep up the great videos Alec. I'd send you a couple of bottles of prosecco if I could!! From Italy Thanks!
Saved me from spending 90 to get it repaired absolute Donny soldier x
Thanks Alec, most useful. Much easier than I ever thought it would be for a not very handy kind of guy like myself. Also, reminds me to wash the filter and change the HEP filter after I've replaced the motor. Keep up with the videos they are great, - you are the man to go to for everything about vacuum cleaners. Thanks again.
Thanks mate saved me a fortune it's working like new again, so good to hear the motor cone alive again
Great video thanks for posting, you gave me the heads up I need to fix my DC19 vacuum which I use many times a day and still love it. Cheers
Cheers matey, bloody decent of you to do this. Champion effort.
I'm guessing the 33 down votes are from fellow vacuum repairers
Great video! Helped me a lot thank you. A great opportunity to thoroughly clean out the internals of the machine when changing the motor, mine was smelling very "fusty" when it was in use, when I saw the insides were cakes in gunge and grime I'm not surprised.
Recycle Hin definitely! once you remove the electronic components you are left with a shell perfect time to give it a quick wash down :) that's what I did with mine and then spray it off with some Glen 20 :p
Brilliant. Thanks! Just resurrected our D29 and prevented it becoming landfill.
Hallo Colin !!! I was just checking the given link from Alec but it doesnt say it supports dc29. Did you find the motor from somewhere else?
just a simple search on amazon and found it !!! thanks !!
It was such an easy job to replace the motor following your video, many thanks for making it!
Brilliant video. I got it done hassle free. Thanks for sharing you knowledge 😀
Brill Alec!! Total success, impossible to get it wrong. Thanks!!
thanks mate this is perfect, thanks for sharing even know it probably takes away from your business, ill now buy a motor from your shop, i wish i had of seen this before i my missus went and spent $500 on a tiny dyson
Thanks a lot dude. I repair my Dyson by my self with your video. Great job.
Just fixed my machine. You're a legend. I feel so empowered! :-)
Fantastically clear and helpful video! Thanks!!
Many thanks , I hope you gain as much by making this video as I have, learning from you .
Thanks for the video, Dyson now working as good as new-it sucks!
This video helped change the motor over, thanks you so much. 😊
Thank you so much man!! couldn't do it with out you! super proud to fix stuff instead of throwing! Merci!👌
Great video. Perfect pace (not too slow and laborious like some). Helped me replace the motor in my DC19 very easily. Thanks v much!
Thank you. Clear and precise instructions. You’re awesome.
Learned some "strayan tech":... Jutty-out bit. Thanks for helping me save my DC21 from the bin!
thank you !! my dc20 died today black smoke came out :( decent as it's over 8years! can I let everyone know here if you find yourself with a small t15 drill bit and unable to remove that tight spot screw a small Allen key will do the job of removing that last screw ! :)
Great video, I found I didn't have to take out the cord retract or the plastic motor housing when I changed mine.
very helpful by watching this video i managed to change the motor and filters on my 5 year old dyson dc29 made it like BRAND NEW super thanks
Excellent repair described well and easy to fallow
Thank you so much for this! Successfully took mine apart with your instructions and ordered the replacement motor. :)
Thank you so much, well done. Dyson runs smoother than before with new motor!
Cheers VacuumSpot, great video £20 saved a £200 machine and she sounds a lot better.

Followed your guide and changed the motor with ease. Thank you so much👍🏻
Thank you so much for posting these videos - very well explained and helped me a lot! Many thanks.
Alec - Thank you very much , very well done & helpful
Thank u for posting this video only thing is I took off the wheels on my Dyson DC19 but it needs a special screwdriver which 1 shall I get its not the cross one or normal straight line screwdriver
Really clear helpful step by step guide - excellent!
Great vid Alec but you forgot to say that your screwdriver is a Torx type, not a Phillips head type,Cheers,Russ.
Alec you legend! Thank you. We are a couple of oldies, shut down by local corona virus restrictions and the trusty Dyson gives up the ghost...found your fabulous tutorial and ordered the parts on line. They were delivered quickly and we easily followed your instructions. Vacuum cleaner is running like new and we are celebrating.
ps what do you know about Fisher and Paykel dishwashers?
Thank hoy very much, nice tutorial.
Unfortunately I have changed te motor and my dc19 still doesn't work. Any suggestion?
Thank's a lot.
Technical term ‘sticky out thingy’ good vid
Cheers!
Thanks, Alec, most useful. I was able to follow the install easily.
Great Video, I'm empowered to change my own motor after watching this video. Where do you recommend I purchase a replacement motor from?
Just saved me a fortune. Thanks very much.
