Great advice, Rich! As a former hunter, I feel that I am attuned to finding animals as well. My wife gets amazed that I spot things that she never sees. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Thanks Jon, great to hear that you also know where I'm coming from, being a hunter and photographer always require the same skill set albeit the end result is different. It certainly takes time to fully hone your skills but getting it really is a wonderful skill to have, you can't teach that in a day! Cheers R
Seeing as im laid up in bed with covid and unable to get out with my camera this weekend your video has really cheered me up Richard and those damselflies were my favourite, great info and tips as always 👍
Thanks very much Raymond, glad it helped you out and I hope you get much better soon. If you are still laid up with Covid I’ve got another video out tomorrow which I hope you enjoy. Cheers and get well soon my friend 👍🙏
Another great video Richard I would definitely recommend to anyone is to get to know your local patch you'd be surprised what you see and a great place to start learning from getting to know the light to whats there at certain seasons , great vid 👍
Great lessons on reconnaissance, Richard. I find it odd when sometimes I am walking along with another photographer, looking for birds and they are looking down at the ground, for the most part. I am pretty much always looking up and scanning as I move. When "hunting", I am moving slowly enough so that if I do trip on something, I don't fall down. You are right that the fully developed canopy makes spotting the birds much more difficult now and the bugs are getting pretty bad. Even though it is hot I still wear long "tick" pants and a long sleeve shirt. I have forwarded this video to a couple of birding friends. Cheers, Phil
Thanks very much Phil, Yeah it's amazing that many go around with their eyes shut and never look up, maybe just a few of these tips will help others with their Wildlife photography. But like you've said always watch where you walk, going down with your kit is never a ideal! Yeah, they are really bad and I always do a proper check when I get home, the 93% humidity was bonkers! tick pants are ideal! I have a pair or two. Thanks for sharing my video, much appreciated. I hope they find it useful and maybe join in with a comment or two, nice to engage with others too. Thanks again. Rich 👍
Beautiful video! I loved it For the first half of it, I was thinking about how that section you were in was dominated by the American Beech (Fagus grandifolia) 🌳 Smooth flat grey/tan barked guys that can become giants If you give that part of the forest 250 years undisturbed, or could just peek for a second into the future, it'd look really special! That vibe you see in those old parts near London on the forested lands formerly (or maybe still) owned by the Royal family
Thanks Jon, It's amazing that it was all wild at some point before man stepped in and cleared mass areas! Still, lovely we still have these places to use in the City. Really, thats very interesting I wonder if they do. Thanks for watching Rich
Thanks Peter, lol... Bit risky but it was Redders and I needed to get some colour on my pins! Plus although they bite I don't react so that's a bonus. Might be different when I move as I think you've said they are much worse up by you? Cheersv R
lots of belted kingfishers in my area but as you said, they are really spooky. The other thing that makes it harder is they are so territorial, you almost never see but one in an area unless it is a nesting pair and only then until chicks fledge.
Thanks Phillip, so so twitchy and hard to get close to, although I was photographing Red Necked Grebes last week and one landed right near me, sadly it was heavily obscured, maybe next time. Cheers R
Top Drawer ....... Will you be making a trip to King Edwards Island over in BC ? Bag yourself a capture or video footage of Bigfoot /Sasquatch . It's the holy grail of Wildlife .

Merlin can be a great resource, but it’s no substitute for knowing the calls.
Totally agree Dan, old school methods are always prefered. Thanks for watching. Rich
