True story, I finished my music degree in 1998 at Sonoma State and Julian was in my jazz improv class...I think he was 9 or 11 at the time. His dad would drive him. They were the coolest people ever. Such a cool kid with amazing talent. He would literally practice his guitar all day every day. Had a great teacher in Randy Vincent. Anyway, it’s truly amazing seeing how far he has gone. Props Julian! Todd Bugbee
Greetings fellow SSU jazzer! I graduated in 2011, and studied with Randy, (and with Chris Pimentel before that). Julian did a residency with us for 3 days, and it was probably some of the most amazing deep growth I've had in my music journey thus far. The cat is just pure inspiration to me. Not sure how he does it, but I owe him a lot, lol. Cheers!
Julian is truly one of the greatest guitarists of his generation, his sound is really unique. The way he sees the instrument is something that every guitarist should pursue, regardless of music genres.
That bend at 0:56 seconds. I've been playing guitar for 27 years and I'm still chasing stuff like that. The little moments that pierce your soul. I only discovered Mr. Lage couple weeks ago but I think he's come to stay in my Mount Rushmore of guitarists whose playing go straight to my soul. What a wizard this guy is. And also seems like the nicest guybon the planet based on interviews. True class act this cat.
Julian has completely his own style and there is no-one who plays anything like him. He has a unique sense of harmony and is an adventurous free spirit. I love his playing.
He’s really come into his own, sublimating all his influences into a recognizable style. But this jam, however, bears more than a passing resemblance to Bill Frisell.
This video (recommended by my music teacher as an example of how to groove solo guitar) slowly turned me into a Lage fan, right now a little over a year later, he's all I'm listening to, because he plays the closest thing to *exactly* what I would play if I had the chops compared to anything else i've ever heard. Julian is the best * Jazz guitarist of all time (*most to my personal taste). I can't live without country blues and Julian constantly refers back to those roots, often almost imperceptually. Genius.
Couldn't have said better myself. His music oozes love. Just pure love and ecstasy for guitar and it's sounds and nuances. He's a beautiful human being. A treasure to the world.
Wow it really sounds like that guitar is his voice, all the best qualities of his tele days with a little bit more warmth available. Fantastic playing!
What so many of us don't realise with this video is how well Julian controls the 'gain' coming from the amp....he truly is the master of finessing guitar overload/overplaying!
indeed! this is something that I love about his playing: his dynamics and how he uses some gainy licks and riffs here and there, as pontuactions or inbetween delicate parts
@@gregberry3524 Dude, what's funnier is that he also never uses the Bigsby tremolo, says that it disorients him when he uses it cause he doesn't like to fiddle around with the tuning of the guitar....says the reason he added it was cause of a weight requirements!
Julian pulls every bit of life out of that guitar and I can't get enough! I'm okay with not being the best at guitar as long as I can listen to this dude!
You know what's cool about this? I read the comments section.... AND IT WAS AWESOME! Well done people. That's a first. And well done Julian for creating a piece of art with an enriching comments section. That says a lot actually.
It's amazing how Julian Lage graces us all with his performances on various extraordinary guitars - making them all sound wonderful. I hope he will remain independent in his choice of instrument. I wonder which of his instruments (so far) folks here prefer? My vote for electric is his Tele, for acoustic it's the 1933 Gibson L5.
I'm into shoegaze, darkwaves and any other stupid name genres.. strangely enough, Julian has been my big guitar hero & influence for the past few years. Can't fight the feeelz when hearing him caress the dynamics chops with smile on his face
usually, when watching a promotion video, the video make us focus on whatever is being sold... here, even as a guitar freak with the famous "gear acquisition syndrome" and all, my whole attention is on this crazy playing and the smile that comes with it, it's absolutely all gorgeous!! 😍
OK theory guys, what happens at 0:28 and again at 1:18. If I spent an hour I could probably figure it out but I'm lazy. Good stuff, Julian. You've got a new subscriber.
That’s an interesting sounding bridge pickup, sometimes it sounds just like a vintage Jazzmaster one, and when you did in, resembles a p90. It’s a chameleon, with a seemingly incredible dynamic range. Beautiful!

I've got Randy's Drop 2 book on my music stand as we speak.

HE WAS HOW OLD??????
Wow,you are blessed
@@louiszaffino4071 yeah Julian was a child prodigy. They made a documentary about him called “Jules at Eight”.

Well said!
If everyone sees the instrument like him, then that’s the end of guitar history. Let’s all do something different.
@@Quinceps ha. Lets start playing hand bells again.
@@jonah_hosea If you can’t help but going *back* to something, then go on. We might end up following the one and only Retro Jonah.
In what way does he see the guitar?
Nothing a guitarist can do is more impressive to me than the ability to sit and CREATE MUSIC on this level.

came here to comment on that bend as well. best of luck in your playing my friend!
Brilliant subtlety and precision
totally agree absolute magician
So much joy in his playing. So in control, so playful 0:56
Almost all open chords, truly a man of the people
😂
My thoughts too. Cowboy chords are not just for beginners.
Open strings just hit different 😆
@@reverb508 Watch his interview with Rick Beato!
finally get to hear that bridge pickup! BEAUTIFUL

Julian is just the most delicate player I know. He puts all his heart into that playing and it's such a delight and inspiration. Thanks man.
Check out Martin Tallstrom too. The touch he has is something else.

Unparalleled dynamics

..and he confesses he “never” uses the bridge pickup! Ever! Except for this video we are watching here 😂 This is him being “out of the box” I guess.

one can only strive to be as expressive as this dude.
A rare use of the bridge pickup ! Beautiful as always
Yeah, I was surprised by that as well. :) Sounded great.
The dynamics! The tone! The melody!
We should all smile so effortlessly when we hit those good “notes” while working... no matter what we do for work ❤️ 🤟 #julianIsMyLifeCoach

One of my favorite songs ever. Thank you from Santa Rosa
I’ll never tire of listening to Julian
Absolutely gorgeous. I have a photo of my son Julian standing with Julian Lage, who’s been a huge influence on him. Probably my favorite photo I own.
Its like.. He's breathing out the song. Incredible. Maestro.
What a beautiful sound.
Amazing how you can see him feeling out the guitar.. and see the guitar opening up to him in return…
they call it the Touch ladies and gentleman, and this man has it!
I hit like when i saw the title 🙌🏻 please do a live stream of some kind! Will tune from Sydney, Australia ♥️
its always a delight to watch and hear Julian playing .... Wow!!!!
greetings from Portugal
Brilliant playing, incredible pocket and feel, and the TONE!!!!
Could not imagine a better video to end the day with. Thanks again, you're amazing

man, Julian's compositions, chords, playing dynamics and licks are always superb!!!
Thank you Julian, for the music, the inspiration, the skill and the joy! Thanks for playing guitar
Hearing the bridge pickup is adding another dimension to my lust for this guitar.
Man that was fantastic. This made me want to embrace the "guitar-ness" in my compositions. Fantastic
what a melody and what a touch

Arguably the best living guitarist, and the maybe the only one who smiles during his playing and I smile too
Guthrie I think has him beat. Julian is great, but I’ve never seen him play anything other than jazz.
This man is a genius with chord voicings and dynamics.
Yeah yeah yeah what a joy
Thank you for being there
no words for the dynamics at 0:52
Gosh... even though he may not be top of my listen-list, he definitely is my joint first favourite guitarist
He has such an incredible and unique voice. He makes jazz and blues that is catchy very different and a melodic way.
this and Japan are my two favorite songs of yours. that shaky vibrato thing you did at 0:57 was so cool
And he made me really lean in to hear it. Filth
he squeezed the note until the last drop.
I'm into shoegaze, darkwaves and any other stupid name genres.. strangely enough, Julian has been my big guitar hero & influence for the past few years. Can't fight the feeelz when hearing him caress the dynamics chops with smile on his face
This is by far the best i have heard from this guy. and that is saying a lot. i am in awe and full of envy😁
Thanks! What a lovely scent you give in your playing, always! It's not only style it's objective personality! Unique!
Merci pour ce très beau morceau...un de mes préférés depuis Chanting.
So…so..good Pat!
Lots of Love, Julian!
How does someone hear this man play and hit the dislike button? It's boggling. Julian is one of the very best of all time!
Probably more of a jealousy thing or insecurity
There is no accounting for taste, good or bad
Social media if full of kids shredding for shredding sake. Julian actually plays music.
Just Like this
I dont like Julian's playing, so I underdand those people 😁. But I didnt hitted the dislike button, anyway I respect him. 🤨
That’s simply wonderful.

Would love this body shape with ony 1 humbucker on the neck, and no trem. Collings should play more with this model. Looks great.
Spectacular
Man I want to hear Julian write a tune with lyrics. His melodies and progressions just beg for it.
One of best guitar songs ever made!!!
Mr. Lage, would it be possible to hear/see you play "Nocturne" on your new Collings 470 JL? Thank you for sharing your gift with us.
So beautiful music! Thank you
Finally starting to like that bridge pick-up eh? Knew you'd come around.
This style is so full of taste man.....Its true expression.
So beautiful!
Absolutely beautiful.
My man knows how good his tone is with him smiling like he does when he plays
Cadogan Hall. London. November. Looking forward to it! 🎸
Se ve que siempre anda bien Pacheco y lo disfruta genial !!
the voice leading! omg i have freaking goosebumps
Breathtaking... one man and a guitar, but oh such a man!
And looks like he's enjoying playing the new Collings guitar as much as I'm enjoying hearing him play it!
What a tone!
Love this man!!! Dang he can play
ok, I'm currenlty attempting to knick as much of this as I can!! Neat little blues in E eh
So much feeling.
that is a beautiful instrument
Beautiful..
One of the best!
I really like the bits of chaos.
I love how he satisfyingly smiles when the notes get a bit more intense 😂
Why is this man so good
His music is so nostalgic
Amazing.
THANK you,..SOUND FEELS DEEPLY INSIDE ME❗️
2:15 looks like he’s running it through a morning glory. It’s blurry but it’s there.
No words are needed...❤
So cool ! So fun!
love the sound of that guitar.. too expensive for me but would love to own and play one.
beautiful
So full, so beautiful, so much love

I really like this version.
Definitely needs to be on thst RS top 250 list.

So great, I can’t wait for mine. what amp were you using?
I love it!!
