  • This is film of Vladimir Vassilev and Nina Timofeyeva performing a pas de deus fro ‘Le Corsaire’.
There are a few somewhat distracting shooting techniques that disrupt the flow of the choreography but in general it’s not too much of an issue.
    Enjoy!

Thank you again, John Hall, for all these treasures. It's so wonderful to be able to see so many legendary artists from ballet's past, not to mention the wonderful films you have shared with us of present-day dancers who are most likely legends in the making.

and there are so many extraordinary dancers today - i focus on the past as i often come across footage that is not widely available - more recent videos are often on YT on many many channels simultaneously. glad you're liking what i'm putting up!

Gems such as this are a record of how much techinque and style in classical dance have evolved while remaining quintessentially the same.
    Thank you for sharing!

Just for fun, I like to put the playback speed at the lowest point, and then pause at the dancer’s (and danseur’s) highest point….the amplitude Timofeeva and Vasiliev demonstrate here is jaw dropping! The fact that they could choose their best jumps doesn’t take away from their ability one iota, because they demonstrated their ability plenty of times in live situation. Of course, the primitive “artistic” demonstration of jump cuts is as annoying as you-know-what, and I don’t feel I need to elaborate, but it’s still a wonderful record of two incredible artists!

John Hall I believe people were referring to him with his wife as "Katya and Volodya" so it was widely used. It's not a nickname but a diminutive.

    hi Toy M
i agree - apart from everything else they are very much a titmus test of the techinque and style of classical dance at any particular period.
curiously Carla Fracci danced Giselle (when i saw her in Milan with Nureyev) in a period style that reminded me of C19 lithographs of the ballet - it was as much as anything in the way she took a pose and the structure of the pose - in the porte de bras mainly - the angle of the head, and so on.

Странно , что такая техничная балерина не стала танцевать настоящую вариацию Медоры ? А станцевала вариацию Гамзатти ?

      hi kv626
absolutely - i couldn't help making reference to the lousy filming in the notes - shot by a non-ballet person trying to jazz up the presentation for the general public i suspect.

Timofeeva has good technique, but she is too big for a ballerina. I think that it was much easier for Vasiliev to dance with Katya Maximova . Vasiliev is the best!!!

I'm so bored with this pdd that can't even find anything to say about Volodya the magnificent! Lifting the ballerina and walking so much about with her is so hyper soviet heroic that it almost looks like a caricature. Why would you do that to a great dancer?

    • @pediatrapaola

l saw volodia doing this live twice with a more appropriate costume and was absolutely stunning ,he could dance rings around every nowadays maledancer ,to no speack about how he was handsome.the only way to have an other dancer good as him would have been cloning him.

    • @JohnRaymondHall

      hi Sima
yes sadly it is one of those tired over-exposed works used only to show off in - few dancers can make it really live for me.
