    Beautiful. Heard this piece on the radio the other day, and fell in love with it. I think we all need more 20th century lyricism in our lives.

    As someone who is always told to play louder even though I feel that I am already playing my brains out. I admire her ability to project so well. Wish i could do it that well.

    interesting you say that she makes it sound like a soundtrack to a bad dream...because that to me is what hooked me. It created suck tension. It sounded like a mystery and suspense movie of the 70s and I absolutely loved that. Anytime someone can create a compelling feeling like that, they made it their own.

    I received a flute as a christmas gift and have been despairing at producing any kind of sound from it let alone something so astonishingly beautiful!!!

    I completely agree on your views on REAL playing...I`m also a flutist and I´ve seen so many talented people deserting music because they´re not able to cope with the perfectionism-frenzy. Really love the way you play; thanks for posting such beautiful pieces, a rarity in utube. ;-)

    you hold your flute how ever it is most comfortable for you and you get your best quality.. i was also in band for 7 years and yes they tell you to hold it up but if you get a better sound with some slant then go ahead.. and she is solo performing so she can do what ever gets her the best performance. damn,

    @teskataftaba - I know this is old, but I must add that it is hard to hear what something actually sounds like on a recording. I've recorded myself many times, and depending on the microphone, you can get drastically different results. I would personally want to add a greater dynamic range, but don't think a flute can ever get too loud when it comes to expressing strong emotional content. The "harshness" comes from the microphone + speakers + harmonic distortion. Nina did a great job! ;)

I am having problems producing clean non breathy notes in the top octive, ( see my vids) any chance you can do something on producing a clear sound in the top range please? i think it is beautiful and that sometimes it is ok to play loudly. (but I am probably bein weird, I am used to playin loudly cuz though I play flute, and can't really play solo in front of a camera, I am in the jazz band) and we are the opposite, our trombone needs to play louder

    you can hold your flute wherever you want as long as its parallel to your lips. i HATE HATE HATE how band teachers say "hold it parallel to the ground" because thats wrong, it should be parallel to your lips. if it isnt parallel to your lips it just makes it airy and flat.

    The only criticism I can offer is that sometimes you let the end of your flute dip too low, which can effect your sound and pitch. Try putting your stand up higher when playing. This almost forces you to hold the flute higher so you can see the music. You probably had it lower so we could see you :), so maybe put the camera on a side view?

    Since i don't really have a teacher or anything, how exactly do you go about getting a quiet sound on the flute, i always seem to be loud.
    Also, getting high notes, do I tighten embrochure? Or use faster air? Or both? It seems like when i try to get a '*third' octave E, i end up doing an A?
    **Third octave, meaning the third octave the flute can do, low c (or B) being the 'first octave'**

    • @gcg8187
      @gcg8187 6 років тому

      ¡Yo$oyChris! Yeah when you play quieter the air speeds up a little bit in the aperture gets a little smaller it looks go forward a little bit, but forget all of that.
      You don't want to go to technical about it or you just going to make that spitting sound so forget all of that.
      Jake, the principal flutiss of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, told me that all he does is close his back teeth a little bit to play soft. I do the same thing, but in addition to that I use my imagination to make the sounds smaller. And I become aware of the space that's like in front of me 3 feet and 6 ft abobe the ground have fun

  • @yanpan16
    @yanpan16 16 років тому

    yep, your embouchure should be smaller but still relaxed.

    Your performance is amazing and the piece is nice but, as jazz musician, I didn't find any "jazzy element" in this piece. What did you mean, please?

    • @eleonoraroussou440
      @eleonoraroussou440 8 років тому +1

      I think that she meant that there are a lot of hexatonics, whole tone and octatonic scales.

    • @beppealiprandi
      @beppealiprandi 8 років тому +1

      Sorry, but what you say is not characteristic of the Jazz music. All the music of the XX century use those scales and naturally the Jazz use those scales. But I don't hear any "jazzy" element in the beautiful piece of Ibert, such swing or blue notes and blue scales. It would be interesting if Nina Perlove would show what she means about "jazzy" elements. Many wishes to you end to Mrs. Perlove

    That was so outstanding, i have a notus flute and it sounds awful! You can certainly tell the difference between a quality instrument and a cheap beginners one. Having played for 20 years on and off i now crave a decent instrument! oh the money!

  • @WorldofIntenseArtie
    @WorldofIntenseArtie 13 років тому

    @XxDaughterOfHadesxX First off, it's not a song...it's a piece.. like the title implies on the link. "Piece for Solo Flute" or in the french title "Piece pour flute seule."
    People, songs have lyrics, text. This is not a song, it's a piece, or work.

    lol! with the right use of diaphragm you can make flutes extremely loud!! its wonderful isnt it? :D

  • @FightingPolygonTeam
    @FightingPolygonTeam 15 років тому

    That loudness is probably because of the room she was in while taping this. I like the reverb time a lot, it makes the sound bounce around nicely.

  • @AnimeLovinMusician
    @AnimeLovinMusician 15 років тому

    and it is also probably cuz of the acoustics

    holding it up straight is only for beginners. this is how the pros do.

  • @yanpan16
    @yanpan16 16 років тому

    i think if you "use faster air" you just blow harder and that makes the high notes really loud and bleh. lol.
    i think the best thing is to get a teacher!!
    lol
    but i guess the embouchure needs to be a little bit tense for higher notes, but only a little bit because you're making it smaller really. play around with different embouchures and stuff till you come up with what you want
    =]

  • @Rodier1128
    @Rodier1128 16 років тому

    Its hard to master flute as well as Nina, just work on your embecure (sp?)
    Mabey if you made a video ( You can just record and upload it as well.) and allow others to hear it and tell you whats wrong? Be sure to ask around a lot. I just got my flute today and I don't hear much air on my high notes...?

    Technique (thumbs up). Musicality (thumbs down). You need to try and understand this piece. It should flow like a stream. You make it sound like the soundtrack to a bad dream. It's not a psychodrama.

    You see, the angle of the flute can help, or hurt pitch and intonation, which im SURE you knew from your major experience with fine arts. In this case, she may need to have 'hurt' the tone, for the song to be played well.

    It is not very good. Too much drama, to little mood.
    Słabe wykonanie. Za mało linii melodycznej, za dużo dźwięków granych każdy osobno na przeponie.
    Mnóstwo dramatyzmu, mało nastroju. Psuje to cały utwór.
