Okay, Black Sails did do it first. But the air of Black Sails is very dramatic and gritty. OFMD has a more optimistic, comedic feel even with some of the themes it explores. I checked BS out bc I heard about it bc of OFMD. It's a fine show, well-done, not trying to dismiss it whatsoever. I, myself, just connect with OFMD a lil more.

His music was seen as critically banal; it was compared to furniture because it was supposed to be just that boring. What OFMD gets (what I love about it so) is that his compositions are thrumming with the feeling of ‘moments about to occur.’ He has the ability to lead a listener down a path to a reveal. Whether the revelation is there textually in the music, that is up to the listener’s interpretation. I was utterly gobsmacked to hear it in my first watch of OFMD. Glad to see it getting love!
