    I lived in England for a couple of years as an international student and can say I considered my cultural induction complete after I had a couple of encounters with some local British gangs in Canterbury. I've got to say, gangs in the UK are...unique? I was at McDonalds (before I learnt that's sort of where sketchy things happen in smallish cities) and a group of 5 kids locked me into the bathroom by throwing themselves against the door. I just stood still for 30 seconds before they realised I couldn't care less, but I was surprised to see all of them were at most 15 years old. Some of my classmates had an incident were another kid gang stole some things from them at our local (heavy drinking) park; of course my friends beat the sh*t out of them after one tried to punch a guy 20cm taller than him in the face, but from what I heard it was definitely a weird experience. Also, are the black trousers, hoodie and balaclava a standardised uniform or something? Like, does M&S sell it as a full outfit? Because why they all dress the same beats me.

    21:47 “The troubles” was a lot more than simple gang culture, it’s extremely complex, for example you would probably get butchered for not calling any those Protestant ones British. To answer your question though, in the Republic of Ireland, our media makes it seems like the gangs out of the Dublin seem are the biggest criminals world wide and even when there isn’t things going on atm there is nearly always a documentary about them like the Dublin Narcos series that airs on Sky in the UK (we have similar shows air domestically for last 25 years)

It’s all just made up stories to glamourise and promote being a “gangster” so they’ve got a never ending supply of impressionable yout to sell thier drugs for them and keep poor people down. Imo.

    Feels like the brutality of gangs or their members have been on the rise all over the place. I mean in Sweden it used to be that if bad stuff happened it happened between the gangs, nowadays a lot of the leadership are hidding away so to force them out, family, relatives, friends or even just acquaintances are getting attacked, killed or even bombed and because most of it is done by kids a lot of random people are getting hurt as well since they just randomly throw grenades or homemade bombs into houses or apartments without knowing if their target even lives there. Also just random acts of violence or murder keeps poping up like "allegedly" some months ago a dad walking home with his kid saw some kids selling drugs in his neighbourhood and told them to stop and leave. Then because they were "dissed" or whatever they forced the guy to kneel down and apologize before executing him infront of his kid. Or just some weeks ago some 15ish kid got into a beef with another kid at school so he ran home to grab a pistol ran back and then shot the other kid at school.

    The reason why we were romanticized gangsters is because they stood up to the man. Whatever you want to call the man, or the powers that be, the people who run the world, whatever it is. They run the world in a criminal way so for them to tell people what they are doing is criminal activity is ridiculous because they themselves are involved in major criminal activity around the world. Maybe not the police officer, but the people who put forth the rules don't follow them. So we respect the people who rebel against them. But the part that we obviously don't like is the innocent people getting hurt

    • @drewwood9410
      @drewwood9410 17 годин тому

      I'm talking romanticize not the reason why people join gangs or make them. The reason why that exists is because the powers that be made it look good to us so that more people would get involved and they could invest more money into military style police and so on and so forth. More criminals means more power. The more powerful and ruthless gangs become more powerful and ruthless the cops will become now we have absolutely military style police forces and ruthless gangs while the rest of the population hides and follows the rules

    I suspect a correlation between poverty, crime and gangs, and whether a community will spend a lot for a funeral, after parties and burials (ie. Death) than they would consider spending on the person when they were alive.

    HANG ON! What a minute! There's some shenanigans going on here... The "Gentleman Gangster" archetype was because they didn't hurt women and children. Not Once in this video did you show this being wrong... NOT ONCE! And if they extorted or hurt grown men, well, what did you expect from gangsters?

    Well what a coincidence. After attending the elementary school called Saint Mark's and then next another school called Saint Joseph's then next it started later getting more than just a little bit annoying when it was constant being assumed that I like country and wester music most while then as time went on too then being given mention only for birthing (but not parenting past the age of 10) a couple of big sons who according to them look like football players. No both of them never wanted to be football players and nor are they interested in freqenting the gun range and that is more than just a little bit okay with me in contrast. Not that I would never in life ever enjoy only be shooting clay pigeons again if I could afford to while maybe enjoying hunting with one of my daughers who likes doing that sort of thing instead of her brothers or her other sister only because we both love the taste of wild game meat while she is feeding it to her 2 sons who are my grandkids. But of course none of those facts would never get repeated among some people going to donut shops with police cars in the parking lot nearby those donut shops. When I was only age 9 or so while already being tall for my age sometimes the odd skater around would start assuming I was there to play hockey on the local community hall skating rink where he would out of the blue then by surprise test me on how well I could maintain my graciousness during a hockey check into the boards move. I got up, made up my mind that next time he wasn't going to take me by surprise ever again and so a few minutes later when he tried to again I only just continued skating on my figure skates.

    Last comment, i promise! But yeah in Top Boy (and the clip you showed in the building) as well as other London gang films and series they all use that same cafe. First time i saw it i thought "i know that place" and that was confirmed when it shows through the window and there's a Lidl with what looks like a big house to the left of it - that's my old hostel and the cafe is on Well Street in Hackney, i used to go in there most mornings for my bacon sandwiches. Lovely Turkish place- i recommend it
    for the food but also if you wanna experience the London gangster film/series properly 😂

    My view of gangs, from the old gentleman gangs of the past (as they are seen) to the ones we have today was summed up by an Englishman years ago.
    "Round them up, put them in a field and...."
    The PR has been good but all these gangs have been a blight on the communities around them. It's as if we need to make them seem more civilized than they they ever were to somehow hide what we are capable of doing to each other.

  • @standandyliver
    @standandyliver 23 години тому

    I knew a real gentleman gangster. He robbed banks and all his friends are dead or in jail but Chrissie Long injured his leg working on the construction of the Jubilee Line (cos they all had legit jobs too)... but yeah Chrissie did borstal, was the first person to escape Maidstone Jail, all sorts but is long retired - i used to love to sit and listen to his stories. You could say he was making it up but he had all the newspaper clippings from his antics. So gentleman gangsters do exist but I learned anyone who actually calls themselves a gentleman gangster isnt one!!!
