Excellent, excellent, excellent performance!!!! I've combed through UA-cam looking for live performances of this song, that match the version from the movie's soundtrack, and nearly all of them have something about them that disappoints me...and some of the orchestras are world renowned. This performance by the United States Marine Band is missing nothing! The hairs were standing up from beginning to end! And to think...there's no string section. Amazing!
Easily the best recording out there. Well balanced, it’s something about the marine band’s trumpets that makes this an experience. Starting at measure 18. For Bb trumpet, C# to A for C trumpet B to G. It’s vibrant and alive, it penetrates the ears in a good way. Lovely!
Of course the US Marine's band is missing its string section... and that's unfortunate... but Paul Lavender somehow manages a powerful arrangement none the less. Well done Marines.
Honestly, until you mentioned it I never realized the strings were missing. Of course, the strings were never the truly memorably part of this song to begin with. At least not for me. Perhaps that lack of them forced the arrangement to really focus on the essential essence of the music? In any case, I agree that it comes through bright, clear, and powerful. Exultant, even. Exactly what one would want from a performance of this piece.
Your comment that it was "unfortunate" that they were "missing" a string section says they need it, yes? And then the arranger "somehow manages" to do a good job without them. The tone of those comments is condescending to the band medium vs the orchestra.
It is unfortunate that the instruments for which this piece was composed aren't available ("missing") as it is a band... but they did so well with it. Yet you are insanely harsh toward this significant compliment. Go have a drink. Relax.
It's a great version, not my favorite, but a great one either way. What I miss, other than chords, which have been replaced, in my ignorant opinion, in a more than clever way, is the grandiose opening. Maybe timing is correct, but somehow it lacks the opening punch I've heard on other arrangements (BBC is prolly my favorite!).
these disciplined soldiers remain so rigidly still while playing. semper firmness
i can't tell if you're joking or not
midnightbread lol
they are not soldiers. They are US Marines. BIG difference, even if they don't go to Boot Camp like the rest of us.
I especially love how the trombone players can play so beautifully in just one slide position.
not going to joke, I glanced up to see if it was string bass playing alone in the quiet section and had the same thought.

There another version by the Marines that John Williams conducted, but this one has the definitive, unbeatable energy.

The USMB is not 'missing its string section', since it's a band and not an orchestra. They don't need a string section, as anyone can clearly hear.
I thought I just said that... and also, who said they needed it?
