The "speak up early" point also works the other way round if you are (or strive to be) a good leader: If you notice there are shy people or "spectators" in your team, just encourage them to make one comment early in the meeting, e.g. with an icebreaker round. Then they will typically make more contributions throughout the meeting.

A refinement to this is that you should not do it round-robin, but one at a time. If you are leading the meeting, always bring the discussion back to you after each new person speaks to make the discussion more 'casual' and decrease the pressure a little. There is this sense of impending doom as you go around the room doing introductions that could be removed if people followed this strategy. Something I learned from a senior in my company.

You should have started this video channel 10 years ago, when I started my career... I remember those dreadful situations sitting with senior people for sometimes 4 hours, and nothing to say, with this "burden of time" adding up... I still wake up at night with that kind of nightmare ! Tips still useful today :D Thanks !!!

I just started in a junior role here in Munich and I often find myself in this position...
Thanks a lot for the great tips, will definitely be trying it out.

Great tip with the "start saying something early on" part, it sort of reduces the idea that something bad will happen if you speak up. Sometimes you'll also say something insightful, get positive feedback and end up being energized throughout the rest of the meeting.

This is great! So many of us start this way and eventually help others starting here. A little risk ramp outline I follow in terms of speaking out is: ANSOC
    1. Appreciate. I like how you summarized this. Zero risk.
    2. Normalize. I've seen this trend/question common across clients. Risk: WHAT clients?
    3. Summarize. I see this in half of my top clients, less in smaller players. Risk: Tell me more
    4. Observe. I would like to know more about (upstream, downstream, higher level manage/control, lower level detail). Risk: Like what exactly?
    5. Contribute. Same as above up, down, zoom in, zoom out but now share an idea that helps. Risk: A weak idea.

Excellent choice of topic Heinrich. This validated what I have practiced all along - get a word in in the first 5-10 mins of a meeting so people know who you are and what you can offer. Off course it shouldn’t be just for the sake of speaking but to offer something productive and insightful. Thanks for the upload.

Great tips, thank you! Another tip I've heard and find that works is build allies. Be honest with your teammates about being quieter and find built-in opportunities within meeting agendas for you to present/speak. This has allowed me to have air time during meetings, while not feeling the nervousness that comes with "jumping into" meetings.

0:30 meeting behavior for junior. esp. for introvert.
0:50 feel shy and difficult to add value.
    1:30 3 tips.
first, make a habit to say something in the beginning of meeting, even it's small and unimportant.
2:00 the burden of time will increase significantly.
    2:30
second, proper preparation: thank what would be the questions. what would be helpful remarks. this would be more than enough to make good impression.
3:40 to be more visible in a conversation.
third, work in correct and sensible way with data. As a junior, you would do more on data analysis - build model, and data crunch. ...
Q: what are the possible question and how you can precisely answer.
where the junior can add the most significant value on.
because you made that and this is your strength.

Tip from me as a parttime video- andphotographer: Stay in constant lighting conditions for the walk and talk.
Or use a variable ND Filter on the lense so you can adjust the brightness without changing apature or shutter speed.
    Greetings from Nürnberg :)

@@alfredoalfaro5000 well, it must fit on your lense. For the purpose of vlogging the quality of a cheap variable ND filter should be sufficient. For cinematic footage not :)

In your time at McKinsey, where did you work?
When you stay as an consultant in a geman office where the meetings in english or german?

    • @FirmLearning
      @FirmLearning  2 роки тому

Hi Jens, this will also very much depend on your personal preferences. For me, 50% of projects were in Germany, 50% abroad (thereof most in Europe but also some other locations like Russia). Meeting language depends on the clients. Some e.g. German clients also employ lots of foreign employees and it might happen that meetings are conducted in English also in Germany. Best, H
