Loki Season 2 continues to explore the TVA as a kind of “afterlife” in the MCU. What does it mean when characters are pruned? Can one truly “die” in the TVA? Erik Voss breaks down this interesting distinction as it relates to the latest events of Loki Season 2 with the TVA torture devices.

Prunes = go to void, your heart stop = go to whatever afterlife the characters believe
I know you counted the number of deaths in the pruning by taking earth's population, but remember a timeline also encapsulates the whole universe, including alien lives.
When Hulk confronted Thanos in Endgame, he said he murdered trillions, so the number is probably closer to the quadrillions.
actually it was Bruce in Hulkbuster
5:30 5:30 😅
Or a 100 vigintillion.
So do trillions of people go to aliath when pruned? Don't see how can fit all those people on that one plane.
@@masterplayer2017plenty food for matter consuming Alioth
If I'm not mistaken, the pruning does erase the entire branch timeline, therefore that entire universe.
Yeahhhhhhhhhh I was about to comment that
the sticks just prune someone and those bombs prune the entire universe
That’s what I assumed. That 2 Trillion number is just people on Earth.
So does that mean that THAT timeline can never happen again? Surely not right? Idk
@@Itsmeipromise11 good point tho ... that means in THAT timeline , nobody can return from it (unless Kang planned or like scripted someones future plans like how he does with Loki ...). thats Kangs defense in some sense, nobody can return revenge him from erased timeline
LOVED seeing Erik getting a bit real for a second there.
I love that you guys are posting more Marvel things now that Loki is back. I love watching your videos so much and it’s cool to see all the theories you come up
with!
So in Deadpool 3 there are Deadpool and Wolverine in the void. It means their timelines got pruned and they will have to get out of there. So will most likely also all the other characters they want to introduce in Secret War, right? That would make some sense I think. Maybe Loki saves them from the void?
That's exactly what I was thinking. Wow 👍
Loki is low key saving the MCU, no pun intended.
Fr btw nice pun 👌
I wonder if the assumption in the TVA is pruning=death as well because none of the agents (except mobius and renslayer) seem to be aware of the void
The comment made about the red line got me thinking.
What if the red line is where a branched timeline solidifies into its own universe in the multiverse. If pruned before hitting the red line, only the immediately affected area would need to be pruned. However, if it passes the red line, that entire version of the universe would need to be destroyed; there by ending all life on it.
I've always thought of pruning as sending you to the recycle bin. That's where potential, probably inevitable, death by chomping will occur.
I think alioth just got fed the equivalent of a few years of food.. should we not assume he grows? I think he might become uncontrollable
That's what I want to know.
He’s been eating universes since the start of the timeline essentially everything pruned is merely sent outside space and time to the end of the TVA timeline where Alioth lives so Alioth is getting food from all different points in history from different universes/timeline now
i mean he didn’t look that big when he who remains showed him in his little 3d projection of how he became to be. (i hope that made sense lol)
I love Loki & Sylvie together 🫶🏽
All the whys & whats of pruning & tempural voids all is fascinating so yes I absolutely appreciate the hard work done behind the camera 👏🏾
Yes it's so awesome! Loki is for sure my favorite of the marvel shows! I also love how they get a lot of influence from Dr. Who
@@CalvinHobbes94 love the Dr. 🤩
I think like if a branch has passed the red line the Reset charge prunes the entire timline that has formed, because the butterfly effect has done more changes than a reset charge can "safely" reset, otherwise a charge just resets everything that was not suppused to happen in the sacred timeline, because we see in multiple reasons the Charges selectively reseting objects close to the nexus event, but leaves the ground whole...
Do the Reset Charges prune just a location or planet? Or does it prune entire timelines, which could include the entire universe? The number of lives killed could, therefore, could be uncountable, if you include all of the alien lifeforms.
I think its the universe.
@@oMorse My thinking exactly. That's going to be a lot of food for Alioth, and an immeasurable death toll 😢
It's everything.. entire branch, 1 offender 100 trillion innocent bystanders collateral damage
@@ChrisTrudemy thinking exactly
Yup the entire universe in those timelines
I think "He who mains,... Knows that all of his would lead back to him,... In the season "Loki" it shows that they need him/ his temporal aura to operate the machine
Eric's hair giving strong Something About Mary vibes.
Fun fact!: That temporal aura photo is directly taken from actual aura photos that one can get taken (background: I actually am one of those photographers) they look almost the same and also use the same instant film 😉
When you prune certain bushes can't some of the larger cutting grow if planted correctly? Maybe the red line is a way to delineate when a timeline has simply diverged enough that it can make its own "true" timeline. Thus the sacred timeline is just the pot to the plant timeline that he who remains watches over.
Keep up the great work, these videos are always enjoyable to watch
What is with NR thinking a timeline is just Earth? A reset charge destroys an entire branched universe, not just that branch's Earth.
🤷🏽♂️
Is it?
He Who Remains showed the multi-verse as parallel, *individual* rings. The sacred timeliness is 1 ring still.
I'm thinking that when the temporal loom breaks, those branches tear away with a temporal aura stream creating a seperate ring/time-line/universe. Until then, they're just "potential" universes until fully separated from the sacred time-line.
Meaning all the alt universes from the movies aren't actually universes OR the loom overloaded, failed, the multiverse is here but since time passes differently in the TVA, Loki is just a different point of view
I think it's just about that's a number we know, or can assume we know for other universes. The actual total for a universe as full as the MCU would be mindnumbing.
Loki was not in a protective suit. Did he age when he was flying towards Mobius ? and how old is Loki now ?
Even if he did, how would we know? Loki’s a Frost Giant who looks like an Asgardian. A year to us would be a day to him.
Do we know how fast somebody age? Look at the armor.@@kbraven7007
I'm not familiar with movie Loki as much as comic Loki but in the comics Loki is a literal God and can shapeshift, not only would time have no effect on him, even if it did he could easily make it look like it didn't.
What is a god ? He can lives for 1000 of years, he can bleed, pass out and die (Thanos snaps his neck). He is not all knowing, he makes the same mistake we mortals do and he could not defend himself from the TVA.@@ngocosmic4400
A great concept idea about the temporal aura being what is pruned, but how would that explain inanimate objects such as U.S.S Eldrige that got pruned to the void. That doesn't have a "soul". Also something else cool to think about in regards to the energy from temporal auras, you notice the colors on the picture Loki gets all match with he infinity stones? Same energy that created them?
I mean Loki, Mobius and Sylvie were pruned but were alive in the void. Those sailors were also pruned and were alive. It wasn't until Alioth came through that ended up killing them. So I don't think pruning someone or something destroys/kills them directly. It just moves them to the void. They don't die until they're eaten by Alioth or die by eating those uncooked birds with the floating dots for heads
3:46 sort of like the spider that bit Miles taking him to the prowlerverse
Has anybody reviewed that Mobius said to Loki in S1 about the the TVA something like "that side over there is like a bunch of nightmares." And now... in S2, Agent 10 said to Mobius, "wake up, this isn't real, WAKE UP! None of this is real!" Is the TVA place more like a Matrix realm? Where real and created cannot be distinguished unless the Temporal Aura picture is taken, to determine if the person is real or sort-of-generated/variant?
I’m pretty sure the whole idea behind the “temporal aura” is just a super fingerprint intended to differentiate identical variants from one another…
If pruning sends them to the end of time of the main timeline and Goliath was defeated that would likely be the set up of secret wars with all the multiple timelines landing there at the same time and go from there.
Also calling a deadpool cameo
I like how high tech the equipment and gadgets the TVA has but how the look and build is in such a retro or antiquated looking fashion.
2:52 the room also has a hose on the wall by the door for the variant goop
The real question is what happens if you get pruned in the void?
likely nothing, when something gets pruned it’s “freed from time”, and the void is that time-less place. you can’t double free something from time
@@lionkid5841 I get what you’re saying I agree 50/50 but it just seems an interesting question to me.
Another question, how time works in the void? Same as in the TVA, or different?
Just spawns 5 feet to the left😂 just an incredibly painful teleportation tool with zero aiming ability
@@simplebull210 that had me in tears 😂 👍
Does pruning hurt? From the looks of Mobius wincing from it during last season when it happened to him, it looked painful.
Maybe it's just one of those things where it only hurts the first time, and your (variant's) body gets used to the sensation after that?
8:32 it really is hard 😔
I feel there are four types...
1. Death at absolute point
2. Normal Death where the body does the soul remains which we see all around. Like in one earth it does not in all the parallel earth.
3. Prune inside TVA is different vs Prune outside TVA...
4. And Death at the end of the time
It's like the meaning of death changes as per the location
Could they use that to explain T'Challa's mysterious death?
Awesome Video Erik!!! I LOVE THIS SHOW SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!
I'M SOOOOOO EXCITED FOR THE NEXT EPISODE!!!!!!
FOR ALL TIME ALWAYS!!!!!!
Is the Void going to become Battle World in Secret Wars. Having all the character battle over that one place that remains when all other timelines are gone
Love your reviews
We're gonna need a video tallying up the approximate number of deaths throughout the known populated MCU caused by the pruning of universes.
All I want to say is each of those branch timelines wouldn't just have an earth. They would also have a nowhere and all the other planets that we've seen so it wouldn't be 2.7 trillion would be a lot more than that
It's not only the earth that gets pruned, it's the entire universe as a time line contains everything every matter there ever was, is and will be.
The effect Alioth has on matter seems very similar to the temporal radiation, no? Have no idea what it means but figured I could point it out.
Love this video!🔥🔥🔥
O wow, loved that connection to Coko
Love these videos
Very nice thoughts at the end of the video
From my interpretation the pruning happens at the point where the universe would've branched off and stoping the deviation in the timeline happening so the whole universe isn't pruned but more like stopping the variants from ever existing
I'm just now wondering why arrest variants like Loki? They pruned the entire branch after removing him. Of course they needed him specifically but that's not the case with other offending variants.
well don't they go in front of a judge where they're deemed guilty then pruned..? temporal justice! 😉
@@davidletarte214what happens if they’re not guilty? Do they just get employed into the TVA ?
@@J.O.R.Dthey’ve all been found guilty lol.
@@J.O.R.DThis was explained as a throwaway dialogue in E1. The trial was a sham of sorts. Unless a hunter/agent takes the responsibility like Mobius did for this Loki, you will be deemed guilty and pruned immediately to maintain the integrity of the sacred timeline.
Verry underrated channel
Put someone in charge of insulating the entire TVA in duct tape, PRONTO!
I reckon each of the pruned universes go to the Void, Alioth eats pretty much everybody and the only people that survived was some the X-Men working together which would make sense since Deadpools set photos are assumed to be in the void with Wolverine
There is two different ideas of ghosts. One is the environments they lived in records what has occurred or there is a soul involved that did not move on to next reality.
I just brought this up in a comment in the last video. Its cool to see that they read them
Please make a video explain how Kang wrote the timeline/knew how everything was supposed to go down. In Loki, Kang says he paved the way. How did he paved the path?
Does anyone else notice that the TVA symbol upside down looks like it says VAL. I can't unsee it now!!
I feel that He Who Remains wouldn't have made the loom capable of using any temporal aura from any variant similar to him. That could allow any variant to use it. Bad or Good. So I put forth the notion that Victor Timely is the creator of the TVA. However he is not He Who Remains. Rather he is a member of the team that won the war. Helped create the TVA then pruned or something. He could be the Fourth statue thay was busted up.
Ouroboros made the loom.
OB is OP! 😂
Ob said he made the machine but it was locked by the apple id of the previous user. 😅
I think Victor Timely is the Nathaniel Richards variant that travels across timelines/universes to showcase his time travel tech to other variants of himself, like HWR mentioned in the multiversal war recap
Watching you all speak on theories makes me think the temporal aura is what makes up the time line. The color of the temporal aura looks like colors of the time line. When a time line is pruned it ends because all the things and people with temporal aura are now removed from time and placed in the void. The temporal aura creates energy which is also what would fuel the birth of a celestial. Yeah the timeline is made of temporal aura. 🤞
I just realized the ship USS Eldridge was the one from the Philadelphia Experiment that disappeared supposedly.
I smell some *anti-matter* chaos
The concept of olioth is something like cosmic anti-matter stuff
Maybe nobody has ever made this question, but how is that Kang can pruned these much planets and timelines and no gods like the celestials, odin, death and many others, how can they never done anything to stop him?? Hes basically pruning the gods to right??
This would be interesting
Love from Belgium 🇧🇪 ❤
How did OB know about "He Who Remains"?
That would merely be the number of Earth human lives gone from the prunenning...
Pruning pulls you out of the timeline. Death is the conclusion of your journey on that timeline.
Duct tape is the handyman’s secret weapon- Red Green
Whatever afterlife destination you believe in, exists in the MCU.
3:21 they should just make a suit then cover it fully in duck tape 😂😂😂
❤
im thinking they need victor timelys tempural aura, hes gunna have to go out to the tempural loom. there hes gunna get hijacked by the kang from quantomania.
I am so excited for Loki s2
Considering that one of the Infinity Stones has power over the soul, I'd say those who were dusted were GONE.
Honestly wouldn't be surprised if after being pruned and consumed by ayliath at the end of time, that each person or thing is turned into energy for the celestials and secretly Kang has an agreement with them
7:36 what if some survivors make a hidden bunker and live in the end of time?
Yay
Damn, that "we die twice" thing is deep asf. Made me tear up about my mom...
Its not just bombing the earth, it's also everyone in space too!
Omg never thought of this, but with alias gone from the void, and all the realities being sent there is the void basically battle world?
Good video
A mangled bloody flesh cube is perfect for a Marvel horror story lol
Maybe Renslayer is searching the multiverse for a He Who Remains variant with a matching or close enough temporal aura?
I think everyone is confused about the rules of pruning, as explained by loki in episode 2 of season 1,it transfers the affected area of the branched timeline so not the whole planet, lets say its an island so as long as the people on the island that caused a branched timeline it will only disintegrate that islamd
💜
Lol what video says 27 seconds ago, i've never been so early in a vid XD
Wow
Huge water hose in cube room… for clean ups I assime
Branching Earths minimum. Who knows if all branching timelines were entire universes that were erased. In all the 9 Realms alone before the events Thor Ragnarok, over 10 trillion souls inhabited just the 9 Realms region of the universe. But like Carol Danvers said in Avengers Endgame, thousands of planets with civilizations on them were undergoing the same post Snap sisituation that Earth was going through.
If pruning means to send you to the void, then when the TVA prunes one timeline, does that mean that one timeline will be in the void???
So are you telling me, no one's ever really gone.
It only erases the people in vicinity.
But Writers have to clarify.
the Force lives on
what i can't help but wonder is when all thos trillions of entities hit the void at the same time, will they somehow overload oliath and the void creating some other calamity
I don’t scare easily but ms. Bald headed minute’s always startles me 😵💫😵💫😵💫😂😂😂🤣😂
Last few comments (my opinions regarding loki season 1 and 2) were quite long so let’s keep this simple.
Booom looking for this?!
Bye y’all
W hey y’all jumpscare reference, almost got me 😂
The spaghettifacation that OB mentioned, sounds like what we see in the Loki trailer where the TVA Monitor is disintegrating into what looks like spaghetti
Yeah, they kinda playing ut fast and loose with the reset charges. But i like to believe that its a localized reset caused had the charge been global, antman, ironman and captain america would've been dead when B-15 set the charge in Mongolia
I wonder if the liath gets bigger with the more temporal aura it consumes
What would happen if you get pruned in the void?? Where would you go?
With all of those worlds being pruned.. Alioth is gonna be busy eating and consuming all of those beings/timelines. Assuming they have the potential of growing larger with each meal… could that be used as a galactus origin?
So do you think Ms Minutes is the temporal aura of Je who remains somehow. And the scary ghost Ms Minutes is just a variant of Victor Timely?
So, Vision would be a completely robotic being, who doesn't have a temporal aura? What does that mean in the multiverse?
