Tuomas uses a lot of different references to himself. He uses "the Dead Boy", "the Poet", or "The Beast" in reference to himself The Dead Boy was used in - obviously - Dead Boy's Poem, and Romanticide; The Poet here, obviously, and the Beast in the Beauty of the Beast.
He used a lot of references of him being suicidal, depressed and more in countless double/triple on tundra in a lot of texts throughout the decades...oh and yes, he didn't only write songs, since he's a poet. Poetry nowadays is a dead art: it's used mostly to fuel other arts, like music, comedy, cinema, etc. But once, it was its own art...some are still clinging to this practice. Tuomas did for a while, before even playing publicly the keyboard. (and mixing xD)

You have steadily become one of my favorite recipes of all time with your originality, and you're always authentic reactions have become a staple in my day. The obvious next Nightwish song for you to react to would be The greatest show on earth. That song is incredible, and you will witness " The Greatest Show on Earth"
Love how you really get this band LJ👍 Another awesome reaction🤘🤘 The brilliance, nuance and mastery of Tuomas’ songwriting lyrics and composition never ceases to amaze me. 3 minutes exactly from where he says “I have 3 minutes and counting “ is when he simulates with his hand the pendulum cutting his throat. Amazing!🤘🤘
This song and performances always breaks me. I tear up every time when I think about what Tuomas went through to write this song to take his life in the song instead of in real life. Absolutely beautiful composition and performance.
IMO, the only thing above this masterpiece is "The Greatest Show on Earth" at Tampere. If I was wanting to introduce someone to Nightwish, I would go with "Storytime" at Wacken 2013. It's Nightwishy, but very accessible, with a broad appeal. And, of course, it's an incredible performance. I would save the more epic stuff for later.
Considering that TGSOE is above all others of recent music history, my long lifetime being my yardstick, I completely agree. This is truly a masterpiece. And as far as listening, this should be prepared for, because of it's depth and underlying storyline. One does not just roll this out to introduce somebody to Nightwish.
@@lazyhominid I completely agree. Ghost Love Score shows off Floor in her multi-talented best. It displays her versatility and charisma as front-woman and crescendos with "the note!" It is an epic production and composition that also showcases Tuomas Holopainen as the musical genius of our generation. Even people with a pop leaning, which is why Storytime is suggested, can see the brilliance of Ghost Love Score, and it doesn't hurt that every single reactor holds their arm up to display their goosebumps. "Greatest Show" and "Poet & Pendulum" are magnum opus's, but you need to grow into them. The American Music Industry has not prepared their audience for such genius, as they have absolutely nobody capable of creating that level of sophistication. "Ghost Love Score" stretches an American listener, but not to the point of breaking.
Have you heard their version of Walking In The Air? One that you wouldn't imagine them to do but they did back in the early days of the group. Starts off traditional, and then.....
Love a lot of bands .. but I think .. [pff think ]... Nightwish is one of the best [Live]💗 .. and we love a REAL music lover reaction .. Tnx👍 .. Greetings from Amsterdam..✌
Guy originally also sang Part III (The Pacific.) When Floor stepped in, she told Tuomas she could sing both part I (White Lands Of Empathica) and Part III (The Pacific) herself, so they could drop the backing track of Guy. Tuomas was happy for Floor to sing Part III, but insisted Part I would be sung by the boy soprano, because of the symbolism of childhood innocence that is important to Tuomas.
This track was originally recorded w/ vocalist Anette Olzen for the 'Dark passion play' (2007) album after original singer Tarja Turunen was fired in 2005... The intro was recorded w/ Anette (but I could be mistaken... they did use a choir for the album) - she was not an operatic singer, but she has a beautiful voice for sure... Floor only sang the lyrics live - the orchestral parts & spoken words had to be sampled, but she sang it more operatically than Anette. Nightwish is Tuomas Holopainen's band... the keyboardist is the main composer and lyricist. The others have contributed musically... for example: Marco (bass) contributed 'The Islander' to 'Dark Passion Play'... and Emppu (guitar) contributed 'Whoever brings the night'... but Tuomas writes the lyrics and works w/ the band's singers on parts and arrangements. He brought Marco (bass) into Nightwish in 2001 because he wanted a male vocalist on the next album that became 'Century Child' in 2002. After Tarja was fired, Tuomas was depressed and spent over a year working on the album without a female singer... By 2007, Tuomas felt that Nightwish was ready to audition singers and picked Anette Olzen because he wanted (at the time) to step away from the operatic vocals... Anette had a softer voice and seemed like the right choice to bring the new songs to life... and he was right for a while. Unfortunately, a faction of Nightwish fans did not like what Anette brought to the band... but the first album w/ Anette became the biggest-selling Nightwish album of their career. My mind was blown when I put on the Nightwish album 'Wishmaster'... the first song 'She is my sin' 🔥🔥🤘🤘I'd never heard anything like it back in 2001.
There actually is a demo track recorded with the choir (both the Metro Voices Choir and the boys choir) with Marco singing everything, so the track actually predates Anette joining the band. It's on the Dark Passion Play deluxe album. The lyrics are definitely darker than what was released.
I'm not sure if you knew what this song was about. If you didnt, when you you find out, it really changes the way you hear the song when you hear it again.
This is a beautiful piece of art that was written by a man whilst plummeting into the bottomless abyss of depression and despair. The listener is given a glimpse into Tuomas’s very soul and I can’t think of any songwriter that has written a song that is more naked and raw. He’s really managed to drench the lyrics with his intense emotions during this dark time in his life. The arrangement of this song is otherworldly. Just the fact that he has managed to line up the song so that it’s exactly three minutes from “I only have three minutes and counting” to the point where he “cuts” his head off is mind blowing. The last part is also amazingly beautiful. It’s basically a compilation of things that his parents said to him as they tried to comfort him. I myself has battled severe depression and my parents said similar things to me, so that part is especially emotional for me. As for your question I would say Ghost Love Score is fhe song that I would present to a first time listener. It really is THE best song they ever made and that is why it is the only song that never will be left out from their setlist.
Love the reaction... The Beginning was a Child Soprano and as mentioned checkout the back story of this masterpiece and it will hit you so much harder every time you listen to it again.
Of those who came home from the wars the world fights who managed to get out alive, most left something behind and will never be the same. Our humanity is missing pieces which we fill with anger, regret, alcohol/drugs none of which helps. Floor gives me back those pieces if only for awhile. Thank you Veterans on this day world wide, you served when others ran away and refused. We pay that price everyday for our service and most would do it again if our nation called on us. That is what makes you all incredible individuals. So many died without notice by those they died for. YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN, NOT IN MY HEART.
@marcusanton95 Why do you denigrate those who run away or refuse to die for a country that is not worth it? Everyone should refuse to kill. Your soldiers do not fight, kill or die defending America. Your government is screwing you over and sending you where you have no business being. The world's largest superpower, the USA, is hardly at risk. And how the U.S treat their own population, you should know best. But on this eye you are blind and don't want to hear anything bout it. Congrats. Such ego-patreotism just pisses me off. . Btw, you know that this has absolutely nothing to do with Nightwish, Mister Pride
Tuomas creates and composes 85+% of all Nightwish songs and albums. He also works with the symphonies and choirs to create any of the backing tracks needed. That's why you may have heard us refer to him as the Metal Mozart.
This is the most important song and story in the history of Nightwish. All sexual connotations are being used as metaphors. The story behind this song would help you to understand it both lyrically and emotionally. I could see the confusion you experienced regarding some of the lyrics along with the twists and turns of the music. Be well LJ.
Hi LJ, greetings from UK I so enjoy your reactions, and then when this one popped up I just had to stay up and watch it I bet you will enjoy it even more once you know the back story and re-watch it 😉
To experience them as a new listener and be blown away by them i would recommend 'The Greatest Show On Earth' because it shows just how incredible the storytelling and epic their performance can be all in one song. This one would be for the listener who knows them better and shows how truly emotional they can get. In the lyrics as wel in the music. Every part of this song is an emotion on its own and its second on my list of best songs from them right below 'The Greatest Show'.
This is the story of Tuomas's depression after the sacking of Tarja the first singer and the vitriol he received from many fans and how he managed to cope by writing this and other songs. With subtitles it is broken down into the various sections and obviously the lyrics.
edger allen poe wrote the pit and the pendulum, this is the poet, Tuomas writing about himself the poet and the pendulam. great reaction by the way from Colorado
Yeah, I’d have to say in Nightwish songs that I just Hass to get people to open their minds to give a listen is definitely this one and the greatest show on Earth both long songs but just so spectacular
The song and especially FLOOR's STELLAR PERFORMANCE in this is certainly one of the highlights in Symphonic Metal. It clearly shows why Floor is the Queen and Valkiry Godess of metal! This masterpiece even far surpasses the boundaries of Symphonic metal. And by the way Marco does fantastic too!
Hello again Lilly Jane. This was another wonderful reaction to this amazing song and performance. Tuomas (keys) is the compositional and lyrical genius behind 95 percent of the Nightwish songs, and this one is literally his baby. Thank you for this.
The voice at the beginning is a boy soprano. Great reaction to an incredible piece of music. 👍🤟 Tuomas is a genius! To open his soul like this takes guts and conviction. I’m sure others in the comments have given you the story about this song. Calling this just a “song” though doesn’t do it justice. I can’t listen to this without tearing up it hits me so hard!
Hello Lilly. The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen. This is one of the interpretations and i know lots of fans do not agree, they just need to read the open letter that was given to Tarja by the whole band at her last concert with Nightwish, where they fired her. And the main reason that Tuomas went through a depression was that specially the Tarja fans where furious and showed that in the media and everyone was blaming Tuomas. (the fans spit on his grave). He felt the whole world was against him. However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does. The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly. Lyric analysis by Annika Hausen Greetings from the Netherlands
love this song. was a choir boy at beginning. love the bit where the boy starts talking and mentions the 3mins. check the timer from moment he says it to when the Pendulum falls. exactly 3mins. their timing was on point
There's a version of this song where it's just Marko on vocals that's worth checking out. The album Dark Passion Play, all of the songs were written before Nightwish found a vocalist to replace Tarja, and they recorded the demos with Marko singing the songs. It's the only Nightwish album where it was written with no particular vocalist in mind.
Thank you for your reaction. So heartfelt ❤ Please also react to the Phantom of the Opera in the Ziggo Dome 2023 of Nightwish. Floor singing with Henk Poort! Absolutely a masterpiece!!

The obvious next Nightwish song for you to react to would be The greatest show on earth. That song is incredible, and you will witness " The Greatest Show on Earth"
Always liked this song.
"Beautiful" is all I can say for this song
69th like. Yesss. lol this song makes me cry every time... than find myself headbanging to tears. its a whole thing. idk
Absolutely love this song and especially the middle and end when she really does that high lullaby type stuff man it will bring a tear to your eye
Love how you really get this band LJ👍 Another awesome reaction🤘🤘
The brilliance, nuance and mastery of Tuomas’ songwriting lyrics and composition never ceases to amaze me. 3 minutes exactly from where he says “I have 3 minutes and counting “ is when he simulates with his hand the pendulum cutting his throat. Amazing!🤘🤘
If loving Floor is wrong, I don't want to be right!
amen! lol
The best introduction is Ghost Love Score 2013. Storytime is an acquired taste.
Absolutely amazing band!
Love a lot of bands .. but I think .. [pff think ]... Nightwish is one of the best [Live]💗 .. and we love a REAL music lover reaction .. Tnx👍 .. Greetings from Amsterdam..✌
The boy in the intro is Guy Elliott. A boy soprano, now an adult tenor.
Greatest Show on Earth.
Definitely
So much beauty going on here...
The opening was the original recording sung by a boy. Floor wanted to sing it live bu Tuomas wanted to keep the recorded part.
There actually is a demo track recorded with the choir (both the Metro Voices Choir and the boys choir) with Marco singing everything, so the track actually predates Anette joining the band. It's on the Dark Passion Play deluxe album. The lyrics are definitely darker than what was released.
They are incredible 🤩 🔥🔥🔥
best regards from Poland 😁
So gut, I think Weak Fantasy from Tampere und Greatest Show on Earth same concert will always be top of list. Dank..
Nightwish is to classical as to what Kenny G. is to jazz. Eddie Van Halen was far closer to mozart then nightwish.
Song of Myself from Wacken 2013 - nuff said.
The holy grail of NW songs 😅. Epic. ❤ And yes. Greatest Show on Earth live from Tampere. 22 min - THE masterpiece of NW so far.
That's debatable.
@@cliffordbarber5997 Wembley version of Greatest Show on Earth is better.
@@johnsmith-cw3wo Both are excellent (!), but me personal - I like the pyro and the look of Floor (like a goddess creating Gaia) more. 🤩
what a show though. and a literal valkyrie
This is the most important song and story in the history of Nightwish. All sexual connotations are being used as metaphors. The story behind this song would help you to understand it both lyrically and emotionally. I could see the confusion you experienced regarding some of the lyrics along with the twists and turns of the music.
Be well LJ.
I feel someone in Hollywood could write a movie around this song alone!
congrats to 100k subs...right song for such an event...Greetings.
Hi LJ, greetings from UK
I so enjoy your reactions, and then when this one popped up I just had to stay up and watch it
I bet you will enjoy it even more once you know the back story and re-watch it 😉
Great, thank you!
"7 days to the wolves" and "Devil & the deep dark ocean".
🤓🇸🇪
I love the Tampere version of The Greatest Show on Earth to show to people who have yet to experience the metal Mozart's genius.
Yes 'The Greatest Show On Earth'. is a absolute masterpiece
That was a great performance from you and them. Do more !
Hi Lilly Jane....your reaction was just as mine....surpriced, impressed and moved by the story behind this song. It's a masterpiece.
This is the story of Tuomas's depression after the sacking of Tarja the first singer and the vitriol he received from many fans and how he managed to cope by writing this and other songs. With subtitles it is broken down into the various sections and obviously the lyrics.
I concur!!!
Thomas Show us His wounds, that we think they are our wounds too and then he health the wounds. All in one Song.
My favorite song by Nightwish is 7 Days To The Wolves live at Wembley , Floor and Marko together are the best in my eyes.
edger allen poe wrote the pit and the pendulum, this is the poet, Tuomas writing about himself the poet and the pendulam. great reaction by the way from Colorado
You gotta know what this song is about to really appreciate it .
Nice reaction. Greetings from Mexico City 🇲🇽
And I know you have people close to you that have served in the military so I want to say happy Veterans Day to all the veterans out there
Loved your reaction!
Awesome reaction.
My favourite is still "last of the wilds" - The instrumentals and use of the uilleann pipes is incredible sounding.
When Floor sings" you have such oceans within" look at the size of her vocal chamber (mouth).... she doesn't even need that microphone....

Greetings from the Netherlands
love this song. was a choir boy at beginning. love the bit where the boy starts talking and mentions the 3mins. check the timer from moment he says it to when the Pendulum falls. exactly 3mins. their timing was on point
Excellent reaction. This song can be taken as an example of "perfection", at least in my opinion. Have a nice day.🤓
I use this, 7 days to the wolves, The greatest show on Earth, I want my tears back, Master passion greed, Bye bye beautiful.
Thank you for your reaction. So heartfelt ❤ Please also react to the Phantom of the Opera in the Ziggo Dome 2023 of Nightwish. Floor singing with Henk Poort! Absolutely a masterpiece!!
his transitions are on point
Nightwish, that`s all. Thanks Tuomas.
This might sound strange, because we all know Nightwish is usually a dish best served live- but you mentioned "well thought out". I'd like to suggest the official music video for "Noise" (with lyrics). Then, back it up with the live version from Hellfest!
Gethsemane. It blew me away when I first heard this song from the very beginning of their career. It's something you do five albums in, not as teenagers.
