    Hi Friend, In this one, I talk about the use of drastic EQ. Using EQ drastically can sometimes be just what an element of the mix needs. Whether it is as an effect or altering a sound that was not recorded properly in the first place, sometimes cranking the EQ and getting really crazy with it can be just what you need! I open up a session that I recorded quite a while ago and show how I used some drastic EQ to alter sounds and achieve the sound I desired in my final mix. I hope you enjoy the video and please leave lots of questions and comments! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, any thanks Warren

    Yes! One of the things I like most about this channel is that you're not dogmatic at all, and that you even encourage doing things "wrong." Hearing this mix, there might be a couple of things that I would have gone a different route with, which paradoxically enough is what I like the most about it. You're making artistic statements, and people can disagree, but at least there are statements made, rather than a timid, tepid, safe mix. Great job (both as a mixer and as an educator) and as always, thank you Warren!

      Hi +noisesoundtonevibe YES!! Thanks! That's the best compliment I could receive! Yes let's break the dogma, the rants telling everyone they're doing it wrong and looking at screens saying there are issues! Music is about listening not looking Haha YOU ROCK!! Awesome video! And what I loved hearing is hearing you say you didn't get it right the first time! You went back in and adjusted it. I think that is very important for people to know. Here, on UA-cam, a lot of it is presented like; "I scoped some 5k, added 3db at 100 cycles, etc", like mixers dial that in from the start and never come back to that. And that on their first mix, ever! :D Well, very good to hear that! Plus I loved what you did here! That atmosphere is just splendid! Thanks!

    Hi Warren. I like recording instrumental sludge rock albums of my own sometimes. It's nice to not have to worry about getting pristine sounds and just go for horrible nasty fuzzy distorted guitar and drums etc. One thing I like to do is record a guitar solo - then reverse it and finally bitcrush it - so it's just a really MIDI sounding noise.
    Sometimes getting horrible dirty sounds is more fun than trying to get really pristine sounds and perfection ! :D

    Great video Warren! Sometimes I find myself shying away from making drastic EQ changes because of some weird psychological thing telling me that I shouldn't do it. When in reality I should just be creative, try anything out regardless of how "wrong" it seems and use my ears and my creative taste to decide what's right.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 років тому

      Hi +Danny James Exactly! You hit the nail on the head, creativity is king! Ignore the rants telling you not to do EQ things a certain way, it's not what it looks like on the screen but what it sounds like to your ears!! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

    Nice advice! I have to say, sometime i'm too "careful" with EQ, it's really interesting to see CLA going crazy on these snares. He doesn't care, sometimes it's pretty insane.
    I'm a bit surprised that you cut so much sub from the kick, did you do that so the bass lives under the kick?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 років тому

      Hi +Lion's Heart Productions Thanks for the great comment! The cut was on the looping kick, the live kick has a 40-60hz sub on it! Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

    •  8 років тому

      Produce Like A Pro Ah that makes sense! I don't know about you but i feel like the kick often has to live under the bass , most of the time, and my bass is often quite present in the 100hz + area. but i cut it quite a bit below that.

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 років тому

      Hi +Lion's Heart Productions Yes indeed, the kick for me lives around 40-60hz and the bass above it. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren

    Okay just want to share something. I record with mixers because I like the workflow for now. The gear doesnt matter but recently I began only boosting on the way in. Meaning, I may cut eq in mixing, but on my boards i only boost. I used to refer to actual notes about the freq. range and the octaves. Now I just boost the gain and go through the frequencies until it sounds good in my headphones. Until I "cant hear the eq". If I take the eq circuit out, the sound doesnt sound as natural. When I engage it again, the points i boosted make it sound like it sounds in the room. Why is this? I concentrate on mic placement quite a bit. Are bad preamps getting in the way of getting the tone i want? Why does boosting make my tone not "better", but sound like I made it sound in the room?

  • @jonburrellschannel
    @jonburrellschannel 8 років тому

    1. I know this doesnt go with the video but why should we use fader rides over just using compression? and could you add another track and increase or decrease the volume that way.
    2. also do you have a video on multiband compression and is there any good free plugins for it?

    • @Producelikeapro
      @Producelikeapro  8 років тому

      Hi +Jon Burrell Great question! I found that too much compression can make the vocal feel smaller and choked sounding! I do a few videos talking about multi band compression, my mix breakdown videos have the way I use it to mix bass. I will have to research the free plug ins more! If you sign up on the email list you will get a list of free plug ins. Have a marvellous time recording and mixing, many thanks Warren
