Obviously, Best Song is not synonymous with Best New Song. A half dozen winners in the 80s and 90s were songs written and recorded years before the year they won.
Bruce Springsteen's only song of the year winner wasn't even his best song. That just shows how great his catalogue is. One of the best songwriters of our time.
Really surprised to only see Michael Jackson on this list once, especially when that one song isn’t even one of his biggest hits. Bette Midler's From A Distance, is a cover version. The original comes from the stage musical Time, and is performed by Cliff Richard and is superior to her version.
@@julianaylor4351 you seem to confuse something. 'Time' is a musical by Dave Clark. Cliff Richard performed the songs "She's So Beautiful", "It's In Every One Of Us" and "Born To Rock 'n' Roll" on its original 1986 album. "From A Distance" was written by Julie Gold in 1985 and has nothing to do with Dave Clark's musical. Cliff Richard released "From A Distance" on his 1990 live album "...The Event".
Because in 1982 they thought, "Wow, we have missed this wonderful song when Elvis recorded it. Let's give this song the credits it deserves." There are other examples like this: "Bette Davis Eyes", "Wind Beneath My Wings", "From A Distance", "Unforgettable".

Every Breath was popular in Anglo Saxon countries, but really I do not think it has had the lasting, worldwide or inter-generational legacy.
