Ben's dry humor is like coming in from a dark and stormy night, soaked to the skin, then taking off your wet clothes, wrapping yourself in a warm fleece blanket, and putting your wrinkly toes next to a crackling fire to dry them off, a hot chocolate in one hand, a good book in the other.
Knowledge, entertainment and always a few laughs I am very happy to have run into your videos. You are uniquely qualified to root for with your submissions, you might not always win but you stick to you commitments, I cheered when you got the PL on the Washington quarter.
Can you imagine, living 100 years or so ago, and having these coins cross your hands brand, sparkling new? Brand new Buffalos, Lincolns, Mercs, SLQs...phew! Our ancestors didn't know how good they had it. The 12-d Lincoln is only the second year the Denver mint made cents! And the 22 Plain is such a freak of nature. Had the Philly mint struck cents that year, no one would have EVER KNOWN there was a 22 with the mintmark lapped off.
That's true and that begs the question: How many other "plain" ones exist out there that were actually minted in Denver or SF? 22 is the only year we could possibly know about.
Hi Ben! Loved the symposium this morning... thanks for letting us know how to link to it! One thing I thought about when you were talking about the coin market... collect what you like, obviously... but also, regardless if someone collects coins worth $10, $1,000 or a million is the opportunity to be a good steward, which you have mentioned before... but I think you could do a video on again because what we have are little pieces of history... some modern history that will eventually become a hundred years old and then centuries old... and some that are already centuries old... I guess what I'm trying to say, regardless of what the market does in the long run it's more important to be a good steward so people can enjoy these coins long after we have them... so an emphasis on stewardship is just as or more important than the market in my opinion! Plus congrats 🎉 on that quarter!!!
The Buffalo nickel is a puzzler to me. Really hard to tell what any coin looks like without it being in hand so really hard for me or any of us to make judgments from a video Schadenfreude ! Love it
I thought it was very fair grading, unlike your first CACG submission. They were higher than my guess on a couple and lower on a couple but I was usually within one grade of their result. Congrats!
I just picked up my first 22 no D Wednesday at the centennial auction Weak reverse also in one of the rarer earlier generation ANA Photo slabs . I believe it’s a gen 4.0 circa 1981-1982. Graded F12 with no mention of weak reverse which if I am not mistaken, is due to the fact, they did not differentiate week from strong reverse circa 1981 I definitely over paid, but in this case, I bought the holder as much as the coin due to how scarce the gen 4.0 photo slab is
Ben!? “That wreath has Lots and Lots of layers of details in it.” Dude - if I was carpenter ant, and I scurried around with my tiny ant level, it would be a perfectly flat plane!! My professional ant assessment: “No Sir! Not a layer to be seen!”
Hi Ben! Im thinking some of the graders at CACG have a hard time distinguishing the difference between hairlines/scratches and die damage. I noticed that on the other CACG video you did. That 1919 D Buffalo is definitely a MS coin with a weaker strike. I dont see any wear on that coin whatsoever. Buffalos have become my main focus and many of those hairlines are actually from the die. I sent you an email a week ago or more talking about some buffalo nickels. I was hoping to get some advice from you about a couple things. I have some really no nice buffalos and one that was struck with the same die as the experimental buffalo with no F that sold a couple years ago although its not actually missing completely. The F is there on both the pattern and mine but very very faint. Anyway, I like your videos man, thank you. Love when you say the date with A.D. in it as it should be!
With the VF Buffalo nickel on one angle it looked like there were fine horizontal lines between the legs. Possibly the reason for being 'Cleaned'. How are those outer rails on the CAC holders? Do they appear they will chip as easily as the PCGS holders do?
@@TheCoinGeek That is interesting. From the looks of the CAC holder the rails appear to be higher where the face of the slab might possibly be protected from scratching if laying flat and sliding on a surface. Thx and appreciate the response!
Nice! Well at least they have improved from that first submission. Still, too many body bags. They need an option to slab ungradable, but authentic coins. Cheers!
Congrats on a great sub overall, especially the PL quarters! Re the details Buffalo, I can’t point to any specific sign of cleaning, but it does have the “look”, which I would describe as shiny yet dull at the same time. It doesn’t seem have the same kind of “texture” as an honestly circulated coin. That said, I have no idea how to grade buffalos either 😂
Wow huge win on the Ms66 PL 48s. Who knows what that coin is worth. I’m showing that pcgs has one stand alone Ms67 PL for that date Seems Cacg did a much better job grading this submission then the first one. I don’t think there was one single coin i strongly disagreed on
Straight grade on the 1912-S nickel even with the scratches? Do you think they’re more lenient with (semi) key dates? Love your show! Thank all of the other shop workers for us- they’re contributing too.
Barbers are my specialty. I’ve sent over 100 into PCGS just in Q3 2023. That is a definite VF20pushing 25. Strongly disagree with the F15, unless it’s severely net graded for being wiped down or the like. Full bold LIBERTY Most of the upper and part of the lower band, good forehead hair and wreath detail and wings about 70% complete along with eagles claw and neck feathers being decently bold Not to mention a great patina and the right overall look for a mid grade circulated barber Love it unless it’s been wiped and we can’t see that
The saying, 'Buy the coin not the holder' may apply here lol but I have heard of some cases where a cracked slab coin will be sent again and come back with a higher grade. .. but is it worth the price of admission? 🤔
When trying for cross-over grading that fails, can you return it with the damaged holder to the first grading company and have it put into a new holder? You know...oops...the holder got damaged. And when your crack-out a coin and get a comparable or better result elsewhere, does that throw off the counts that the grading companies maintain of quantity of coins in that grade? And is this a problem?
Because grading is very subjective. Send one coin in 10 times and chances are high you're gonna see 5 different grades. It's why it's so silly for people to buy the slab or sticker and not the coin.
Pretty soon they’re gonna ask you to resubmit their own “graded” coins to have them put stickers on. Then after that PCGS & NGC are going to offer their own “stickers” or “special labels”. Just keep adding up the retail value that end clients pay to have a coin that someone else shows approval for lol
@@donaldinnewmexico yeah I understand, but that’s a beautiful coin. If it’s a “C” for CAC then why is it an easy 63 for CACG and not a MS62 or perhaps a 62+. Trust me I really like CAC and CACG. I’m just really surprised on that coin. Of course, we are looking at these coins through a lens and not in hand, but wow beautiful coin.
@@okgroomer1966 I hear yeah. I really try to buy the coin, but with the slab, grade, stickers whatever there is so much “visual noise” when trying to decide on a coin. Again I really like CAC and CACG, but I’m trying to have a more informed opinion.
It will be interesting to see if a PCGS or NGC coin with a CAC sticker is worth more or less than a CACG graded coin. Will a lot of CACG coins come back cleaned? John doesn't care for blast white 19th century coins and classic head gold coins that have been lightly cleaned.
Thanks for sharing this most excellent reveal! I’m glad to see CACG appears to be much more fair than your previous submission. What is your pricing strategy for these CACG coins?
Hi Ben. There seem to be a lot of fine horizontal scratches on the buffalo on the 1919-D Buffalo Nickel. CleanED. I was too late to the website to pick up that 38-D Buffalo. DarnED. I love toned Buffalos. I noticed the date on the 1885 Indian Cent before you mentioned it. DamagED. Indian Head Cents and Buffalo Nickels are what got me interestED in coins. The 48-S Washington is gorgeousED. 🦉
That 1910 Barber looks good. I always use 'L I B E R T Y' to separate the fine grades from one another. I'd say I agree with CAC on that one, though the jawline is a bonus. That seated half should be AU
That "Cleaned" thing really bugs me. I don't think the grading services should be in the business of making that determination. I've seen some coins marked "Cleaned" that were really excellent examples and their value is deteriorated because of the label. If a coin has been detrimentally cleaned, it will be visually obvious and one can decide for themselves whether or not they like the look.
Lmao that night and day difference between the F12 and the F15... this is why I don't do grading. It's so opinionated, couldn't be further away from an exact science. Fun watching your coin hauls though.
I don't like the way coins look in those holders. I am not saying that to be rude or anything. My preference is PCGS gold shield. Those holders do nothing to make a coin pop. Just my opinion.
The fact no one is talking about that is funny to me you send a PCGS rattler into cac sticker and it is not sticker worthy to cac but then you turn around send same coin to be graded by CACG and they put coin in ms63 holder huh makes no sense to me if it was not a good enough 63 to sticker then you would certainly think they would grade it a 62 in there holder but no CACG puts it in a 63 holder also this is a contradiction to me

Who said what now?
Agree about the cleaning grades. They should have a scale like 1-10 with the cleaned as all cleaned coin are not the same and really on a spectrum.
Since the CAC holders seem sturdier than others. Can you show us your process for cracking them out?
With the VF Buffalo nickel on one angle it looked like there were fine horizontal lines between the legs. Possibly the reason for being 'Cleaned'. How are those outer rails on the CAC holders? Do they appear they will chip as easily as the PCGS holders do?
I could be wrong ….
The outer rails doesn’t chip, as the outer is a soft plastic. It would dent first - very interesting make up .
@@TheCoinGeek That is interesting. From the looks of the CAC holder the rails appear to be higher where the face of the slab might possibly be protected from scratching if laying flat and sliding on a surface. Thx and appreciate the response!
Is there a difference or is it better one way or the other between coins being graded directly by CAC or just having the coin stickered by CAC?
We will have to wait and see over the king term what happens. The stickering is still very popular !
That Washington is gorgeous! Definitely don't see many legit PLs in the series.
That seated half is an AU50 all day. The VF details buffalo is disappointing, but the rest of the coins were fair-ish.
Seems like world's away with the 1912Nickel(F12) and 1912Barber half(F15)

Damn they are so picky.
A lot of those low-ball grades by CAC, remind me of the low-ball, white 'motel soap box' slabs by ANACS.
The 1919 Buffalo looks polished to me. I looked at the CAC photos and the coin looks a little worse there, but it's definitely been messed with.
