@@meta9492 Yeah, but that's a technicality. It's far more than what's usually marketed as a "remaster". And the fact that it has the original code and plays exactly as the original game, makes it even better than most (if not all) remakes, because the gameplay is intact. Same as Diablo 2 Resurrected, which is much more than a simple remaster (and I hate Blizzard BTW).

@@nozzzzy There's a conversation to be had about companies labeling things as Remasters and Remakes. Remasters use the existing game as a base and add to it, and Remakes start from scratch. One could say things like Shadow of the Colossus, Demon's Souls, and The Last of Us "Remake" are actually Remasters, especially because they are using the original code.

As for save states, its a conscious choice by the game designers dating back to at least super Metroid. It amps up the tension as you traverse areas, as deaths are more punishing, forcing you to engage more with the game. Once you get used to traversing it becomes less of an issue, especially with the better controls.

There are parts of the game that have been too dark for my screen unless I'm playing in the dark. If only you could swap ZL and L this game would actually be totally functional on a GameCube controller in the dual stick controls, too!

Just a little hot tip for those interested in the gyro control implementation as it was kind of confusing for me at first.
You can activate gyro controls in the dual stick control scheme to play the game more in line with an FPS such as Splatoon.
The hybrid format is something entirely different and kind of meshes the GameCube style while giving you wii pointer aiming when you hold the trigger. It's very unique and could be fun, but wasn't what I was looking for. So If you're looking for more genuine "wide turns with stick fine adjustments with gyro" look through the options in the dual stick controls.

This is something Nintendo rarely seems to care to implement so the fact it was done here, ALLOWED to be implemented is huge.

Other than the switch to 16:9 AR, Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii was a graphical downgrade from the GameCube original. Several graphical effects were sacrificed in part due to the new camera system implemented to accommodate the motion control scheme. I just played through the Phazon Mines again after years and forgot how brutal they are, if you die before getting the power bomb then good luck replaying the last 30-45min again. Same! Would be weird it Switch only will get Metroid Prime 1 and 4. Where's 2 and 3?
I don't expect Metroid Prime 4 to get released now in 2023. Probably in 2024 if they don't release 2 and 3 as remasters before.
There's different release strategies to release all 4 games (if they do):
      Trilogy, 4 (no longer possible)
      1, 2, 3, 4 (one game per year)
      1, 2 and 3 as combo pack, 4
      1, 2, 3 and Trilogy, 4

      1, Trilogy, 4
      1, 4, 2, 3
      1, 4, 2, 3 and Trilogy
      1, 4, Trilogy
      And some other strategies.
I have no idea how Nintendo will do it. If they do it. Since this is a business with profit ambitions we have to try to see what will be the best for Nintendo and Switch - and for the Metroid fans.
It would be so sad and boring if they will skip game 2 and 3. I hope they will release game 2 and 3 as seperate releases. And then Metroid Prime 4. That will give the dev team as much time as possible to make the 4th game as good as possible. Maybe there's a new and more powerful Switch when MP4 is ready. I'm so excited!

The level of polish you describe makes me think that's why only the first game in the prime series was released, but with the lower price tag and the fact that it uses the source code from the trilogy bundle on the Wii, I'm very hopeful we may see the later games get a similar treatment in the lead up to the reveal and launch of Metroid Prime 4. And with game boy and GBA games now on switch online, there's a chance we could see every Metroid game playable on a single console! I'd guess deliberate, tho, since lighting effects are easy to sacrifice to maintain FPS. But it is mildly annoying, especially when I shoot my gun into a dark area expecting light, but only the impact causes a tiny flare.
But that is a very minor nitpick with what is otherwise a superb remastering of a superb game.

I recall that they had to ditch it in Trilogy in order to make a consistent HUD using Prime 3 Corruption’s code base. There might have been something similar with the specks of water that land on your visor when you look up on the surface of Talon IV, but I’m not sure about that one. I recall the heat thing because it really bugged me that the Wii version was missing an effect from the GameCube version.

When the doors are the biggest annoyance, you know you did something right. This is a gorgeous remaster. Almost 100% perfect. My only issue is the thermal visor. They changed how it looks a little, and it actually messes with my motion sickness while it’s on now.

    • @joshz2491
      @joshz2491 Рік тому +2

I think the increase in lighting is probably the reason why the thermal visor is so different, such effects in the original version were duller, but all the lighting pops out on the remaster, meaning that the colors can be more of an eye strain than previously especially when the camera is moved, but I don't know if this could be avoided at all.

From a standpoint of charging the cannon and lighting the room, I think it’s intentional. When you have a bright light source right in front of your face, that is not directed away from you (I.e. flashlight/search light) it overwhelms your eye and you lose depth perception and almost blinded. So that may be intentional

I'm convinced that this game was ported using black magic on the Switch. I've gotten so used to compromised sub 30fps experiences on the aging console, that seeing 'Metroid Prime Remastered' on it not only looks fantastic graphically, but also runs at a dreamy super stable 60fps. OG Retro Studios are definitely effin wizards when it comes to optimization.
Also at 7:28 the remastered version's charge beam doesn't light up the environment like it did on the Gamecube original sure. But on the bright side though, it does light up Samus's helmet UI in real-time. So I think it's safe to say that is a fair trade-off to an otherwise nice subtle technical feature. I'm joking of course.

And that it is not so much about grafik quality, if a game just looks nice, and more about outstanding designs. In my opinion Metroid Prime on the GC still is a treat for the eye, just because of this great world and lively animations. And they made a worthy remaster for this iconic game.
