- Overview and demo of the Ibanez Gio GRG140-WH with upgraded custom set pickups from Warman.co.uk (these ones with the massive slugs are called 12 Gauge and 6 Gauge).
Backing track is another one from Unhinged, they're on Band Camp.
I just bought a lbanez Geo and played it once then placed 1 mm x 5 mm neodymium magnets on all the pole pieces and it immediately brightened it sounds like an expensive guitar I paid $80 for Scott good action it's been well cared for it although its sound was dull now it's Bright!!! Through all tone settings!!!!
How do you do that? Just place the magnets on top of the pickup?
I had this idea too. Did you fix it with superglue?
I own 7 RGs, an SR405EQM 5 string bass, and just picked up a Gio RG for my neice. They're great guitars, and super fun to customize!
All of my RGs are modded in some way or another, new pickups (I've recently gotten into different colored pickups, I have black, white, cream and black zebra, pink, red, blue...), different knobs, switch tips, etc. 2 are Frankensteins, one I'm still in the process of building
They are lovely guitars. As I mentioned in the video, I really love the sharp angles on the body edges, there’s just something premium feeling about them.

When you put the vinyl on the scratch plate. How did you make the wholes for the pick up and knobs etc. Scissors?
Good question! I actually just used a sharp knife to cut straight lines across the gap, then folded the vinyl over to the back of the scratchplate so that there were no crappy edges showing.

Jek R.B. Hi, thanks for watching! The GRG250P would be fine to upgrade, just make sure you order the right configuration (in your case it would be a HSH set). I would probably recommend a cheaper alternative to Seymour Duncan though, perhaps look into Iron Gear or Vanson for high output on a budget.

I had a really good look around a guitar shop near me and after talking with a chap and having a really good feel of all mannner of makes of guitar i plumped for the ibanez-the neck felt just so right in my hands!!!
Great to hear that people don’t believe in “too late to learn”. And the necks are one of the main draws to Ibanez, usually resulting in people trying body shapes that aren’t really their cup of tea. Now go practice!

Hello, I'm looking for a grg140 black pickguard, I see you have one on your white grg140, where do you find it please, I don't find anywhere!

michael zurita hi, good question. The simple answer is that you can't buy them. This is a white pickguard but with black adhesive vinyl wrap over it. There are websites that will make you a black one if you send your old one to them, but it can be expensive.

hi tim i resently found this guitar in my garage and i want to start playing it. I want this to be my project guitar. question, if i were to put some new pickups in this. Will any pickups work for this guitar or is their a certain pickup that is only works for ibanez? sorry im new to upgrading guitar parts and dont know what will go where, if ya know what i mean.
Great question, and something that everybody new to modding should ask. Absolutely anything will replace these pickups as long as you stick with the same configuration (humbucker, single coil & humbucker), but the only thing I’d advise is to make sure they’re passive, which is the most common type. This way you can keep the other electronics as they are. If you went for active pickups, you’d need to replace all the components and add a battery compartment, which makes it a much bigger job for a beginner. Let me know how you get on!

I’m pretty sure it did. If I remember correctly it’s routed for HSH.

Hello, I have been looking for the same pickups you show in your guitar, but in the Warman page, I can only see the 3 single coil set. Do you have to buy 2 sets of 3 singles? or there is a set of 1 Humbucker and 2 Single coils??

GUARATARO99 hi, great question! I had the same issue because I could only find the humbucker (called the 12 gauge) second hand on eBay at the time, so I knew they had created them at some point. I simply emailed them directly and the owner sent me a custom SSH set. What's on the website isn't always the limit of their models, so it's worth asking them.
Thank you so much, I will look to send them an email. Do you know if there are some versions of this model that have the headstock in Maple color? or am I in front of a possible fake or a Chibanez? I noticed that this have only 4 screws in the lower part of the scratch plate instead of the 5 in yours, and also the headstock is clear (maple colored) instead of the Black in yours. Could be a very old version of a GRG140?

GUARATARO99 I've not yet seen a Gio series with a maple headstock, but I'm sure there are some out there from certain years as it's doubtful there would be counterfeit copies of anything less than the Prestige models or higher. The scratchplates do have slight variations depending on things like the pickup layout, bridge type and even slight alterations to shape in general. I was unable to find replacements for my scratchplate due to the pickup layout being SSH. If it had been HSH I would have easily found a replacement. If you want to send some pictures to my google+ account I could try and give you more information.

hi I just bought the white 7 string gio guitar, I have 4 ibanez and I would not go any where else.i got scratch and dent so 199 to 130 can't go wrong.neck was badly bowed but since I can't afford the satch guitars or 7 string vai now I got this.good thing I can fix the neck.once I got it set have not looked back,I love it.

Gio grg140 or gio grx70qa which one is better? I’ve seen this both guitar in same price at online sell can you help me?
They’re exactly the same except the grg140 has a scratchplate and the grx70qa has a flame finish (which is just printed under the lacquer, it’s not real flame maple) so it just depends which you prefer the look of.
Did you change the pots out are they 500 or 250
They’re the original pots, 250k if memory serves.
These pickups seem to be rather spot on versions of the Duncan Invaders. A set of humbuckers shipped to the states would only set me back $40 or so. Beats the $150 from Duncan
That's exactly what drew me to them, absolutely fantastic sound and almost identical in tone and power to the invaders. I compared them to an SG my friend owns that is equipped with an invader bridge humbucker, aside from the influence of the body density there wasn't much noticeable difference.
I like the original bridge pick up sound. I would change the other two if I cared.
Aspirative Music Production I agree the bridge wasn't too bad, but I like a bit of range so the single coils were too underwhelming by comparison, and I figured if I was going to change two I may as well change the full set.

Would it be possible to put an EMG in the bridge?
Jose Rodriguez it would be possible to fit a passive EMG humbucker yes, but if you want an active EMG you would have to replace all the pickups with actives due to the electronics required. Also be prepared to make a hole in the back for a battery cavity because removing the scratchplate to change a dead battery is a nightmare.

What was the material you put on the scratch plate again? Cheers nice video. I just bought a grx40 for 99.00AUD around 45.00gbp was missing the back plate and a grubscrew in the bridge but i found the stock pick ups sound not bad. Not sure if i got a bargain, it was my first ibanez as well and I had no idea what it was worth. i just assumed that was a good price. But yeah plays really nice
You definitely got a bargain there mate, they retail second hand about £250 as far as I can tell from a quick check online. The material I used for the scratch plate is called Fablon, but I think they stopped making it. The equivalent that seems available over here now is called D-C-Fix or something, it's just a thick self adhesive plastic film. I'd try your local hardware stores before you go online, they have different textures and subtle patterns. Your model should also have ready made scratch plates available on eBay and other online stores, but just make sure you pay attention to the hole location on the lower horn, that seems to be the bit that trips most people up because there's two designs and they're only slightly different, but enough to make a simple mod into a fuck up. ***** it's good for pretty much everything except vintage tones. If you're playing punk you'd even be ok to use the stock pickups.

What is your opinion about the neck ? Thicker ou thinner by comparing to other Ibanez …. Awesome video btw I am looking to buy this one but also want to change to black pickupguard 😂
The neck is thin compared to Squiers or Epiphone, but slightly thicker than the higher end Ibanez necks.

@@bgnookie I went with a matt black because I felt it looked a bit classier, and the adhesive vinyl tends to be thicker with the matt finish which conceals any blemishes in the scratchplate underneath.

I considered it, but I decided I preferred a stronger contrast.
I have this guitar and only tune up I made it was change locking tuners.
I pay it 197€ and tuners paid for 100€ half the guitar price ha ha.
But it is great sunburst finish with mahogany body. It has darker sound strato is too bright for me.

Locking tuners are a great way to improve the use of an already fantastic guitar, so I'd say it was worth the money you spent. It's a mystery how they can profit from the Gio series, but when the guitars are so reliable and so well built in the budget range, it's only a matter of time before we start to wonder how good the higher series are. And here's a clue: they're bloody brilliant. If a learner begins on a cheap Gio, it's only a matter of time before they upgrade, and if the Gios are so reliable, they'll naturally progress to the RG or Prestige series. Very clever business approach compared to Squier or Epiphone. Thanks for watching!

Yeah, you are right if they made unplayable bad sounding low budget guitars this would not happen.
When I started to play 1978 I have old Hofner guitar that was bad to play and never in tune.
But that doesn't matter then when I played only three chord Punk music :).
Ibanez knows that never do bad guitars even their cheapest are really good.
I just put 2 new springs in the back of my gio, and some 12-60 strings. Not only does the bridge actually float flush to the body, but it holds tune when I wail on the whammy.
Before I was either using 10's and not touching the trem, or heavier gauge with a chopped up drumstick to block the trem. Now its one of the best playing guitars I have. Comfier than my s320, easier to play than my 64 guild t-100 (although that thing is really special). Maybe a nut change in the future and she is set.

You tune in normal A4-440Hz ? Nice to hear that beast can hold so thick strings and is still playable.
kipponi Yeah 440, but I'm tuned to D#. The claw in the back that controls string tension has quite a ways to go before it bottoms out. E standard would be no problem (bends might become a little tricky, depending on the player).

Miky Giò good question. Unfortunately I haven't tried the GSA60 so I can't make a firm decision, but I do have an SAS32EX which is the same shape. If you're looking at playability, I'd have to say the GRG plays faster and easier.

Miky Giò the easiest way to find out properly is to head down to a guitar shop that has both and try them through the same amp to see which you prefer.

Why would you not want an Ibanez? They have been making outstanding guitars since the mid 1970s. They made them before, mind you, but the quality came mid 1970s. I have a 78 that I bought in 83 that is absolutely awesome. They weren't CNC back then. They were made by humans.
It was purely a taste thing for me. I was never really into superstrats because I grew up in the 90s when shred was (for some) considered to be for the self absorbed poodle rockers of the 80s. I grew up listening to 60s and 70s rock from my dads music collection, and was surrounded by a 90s music backdrop in the outside world, so I guess it had been indoctrinated somehow that "pointy" guitars weren't my thing. But I'm making up for it now, I have 7 Ibanez guitars which makes up 10% of my collection. I'd like to try an older Ibanez, the oldest I've played with was a 1986 Roadstar I had to rebuild for a customer.
Tim The Budget Guitar Guy I dig that. I turned 18 the same year as that Roadstar. Funny. I am not a big fan of 90s music either. There were a lot of other guitars made by Ibanez besides the RG (and earlier Roadstar series). I'm an Iceman guy myself (not particularly pointy), but that's from my era.
I would say that the self absorbed shredders are probably mostly the guys that hang out in music stores to "show off" and seldom actually buy anything. The others are mostly just people that can actually make use of all the frets ;)
Anyway, glad you have come to appreciate them. They are great made machines for the money. If you get a chance to play a high end late 70s/early 80s Ibanez (my favorite era for them) you'll REALLY love the quality.
I have an Ibanez Artist that has a neck i like BETTER than my Godin Progression.
Can you recommend this for a beginner? Can anyone recommend it for a beginner? It has jist about everything I want in a guitar without destroying my wallet.
Absolutely, I can’t recommend it enough! For the price point it’s extremely versatile and incredibly well built. I’d even recommend this to advanced players.

@@DanielSmith_19 I don’t think beginners should avoid floating bridges, but they definitely need to be aware of how they should be set up. My advice would be to watch a few videos on how to set them up yourself, because knowing how your guitar works is not only important, but also fun. I’d probably steer clear of trying to use a whammy bar while you’re starting out, and introduce it when you’re confident of the fundamentals.
So no comparison/review comments from yr Ibanez experienced mate who actually played the guitar! and owns/plays premium Ibanez guitars!! Worst case of missed opportunity reviewing in utube history!

Seems those basic traits of a guitar would be first and foremost.. A Grandslam for a guy who is learning how to play ? basic chords and exercises, scales consistently. Lol.... I don't know .. lol

Pickups are expensive, I will not buy a guitar that I have to change pickups because then its not a good value.
You clearly didn’t pay attention to any of this video. Those pickups cost £25 new for the set. If you want to buy a guitar for less than £200 then it most likely doesn’t have good sounding pickups. You’d be spending at least £400 for a guitar with decent stock pickups and then it’s not good value because you’ve already spent 4 times what this cost.
