OMG, I’m so glad that you remembered Anita Baker! Many of her hits are from around 30 years ago, but they remain so unexpected and pleasant as if they were newborn. I’m sure that within the next 50 years they will still remain lovely and surprising as before, because they have the fingerprint typical of all good artistic work. Yes, Anita Baker can be very proud, her songs became a classic, and her voice a reference for many singers.
She's not a true contralto. Her range is that of a mezzo soprano. Her vocal range is much higher than what people think. She has to contralto tone to her voice but she really doesn't get down there. Lalah Hathaway that's more of a true contralto. This song is an example of how high Anita can get. Faith Evans struggled to try to do this song and she's a natural soprano. Couldn't hit the notes
Jeff...just happened to come across your critique on Anita. She does have one of those vocal presentation that sort of hits you like a velvet hammer. You..like so many of us envied and admired her instrument...just strong and clear from such a small frame. What comes to mind is another Melba Moore...just Stellar! Thanks.so much for the overview..from a fellow advocate of hers. Wishing you much success on your channel...
The thing is... you don't have to compete with the greats... you have people like Jennifer Lopez and Taylor Swift who can't compete with them either who have been able to create a career in singing... if you want to be a singer, don't think being a GOAT is the only way....
Absolute Legend!
Man! After 30+ years this song STILL gives me goosebumps! Pure mesmerizing artistry! I thank U.
Iconic!!!

She's has the most amazing voice. A natural mezzo soprano with a deep contralto tone
Anita is the female version of Luther Vandross for real
She is the most sensual's contralto voice what I have listened in my life

@@RTDavis0503 Thanks for this specification, she's really a "mezzo", but she's almost contralto in especially times,

Awww, that was a nice walk down memory lane. Reminds me of my teen years. ❤️
How bout just go by how many chills you got. Needs no real explanation. Coming from an ok singer!
Love me some Anita Baker!! Please check out Morgan James doing Maps or Dream On or Rachelle Ferrell doing I Can Explain!! Those two ladies can sing!!!

Sadly, both times I saw her live, she was an incredible disappointment. She gets shouty in concert. 😥
Agreed. I did see her in concert a few years back and my friend and I had the same exeperience.
I got lucky, then. I saw her three times in succession in the late 90s. Greek Theater in L.A., then twice in one week in Vegas. She was fantastic.
I must’ve got lucky too because every time I’ve seen her she was absolutely phenomenal!
@@mistersnitty7721 so happy for you. I truly wish I had better memories of Anita live....
@@breal9028 good for you! I truly wish I could say the same. She has such a phenomenal voice!
