  • Looking for an adrenaline rush? Check out China Walls! China Walls is about 20 minutes from Waikiki, if you can find it. Stick around and I will tell you everything you need to know.
China Walls is located really close to Koko Kai Mini Beach Park in the community of Portlock. There are no designated parking spaces, but street parking is available. China Walls is located in a quiet neighborhood, so please be respectful.
Once you reach this point just follow the trial down to the breathtaking stretch of lava-rock ledges. The ledges are exposed and there is not a lot of shade. Locals love this spot for cliff jumping and surfing. It is also a great location to experience a spectacular sunset or just hangout tanning and swimming in the turquoise waters of Hawaii.
As you might have guessed China Walls is named after the Great Wall of China. The water is about 10 - 15 feet deep near the ledges, but this depth changes dramatically based on surging currents. That is what makes this location so popular for cliff jumping. When there are big swells it can be very slippery on the rocks, so please be careful.
China Walls is an epic place to surf, if you are experienced. You can see surfers glide past the rock ledge when the water surges for that ultimate adrenaline rush. Although China Walls is really fun it can also be dangerous for surfers and anyone hanging out in the water. There is a risk of being slammed into the lava walls and if you are just hanging out in the water you could get steam rolled by a surfer, if you are not paying attention.
There are no lifeguards on duty, so please keep safe and enjoy your free adventure.

If you havent swam in any of the other beaches in hawaii you have second guesses swimming at china walls. there has been Olympic level swimmers who nearly drowned here. Itll be calm and relaxing at one moment then out of the blue the water will have you swimming for your life. also you have to time the waves to get back onto the rocks(there is also a rope connected to the rocks)

I think timing your exit is the most difficult part! You can spend a good amount of time attempting to get out and not be able to. Extreme caution is definitely a must!

I am so sorry for your loss. 😢 This place is so treacherous and will challenge even the best swimmers.

I wonder how many people died watching this video (i.e., watched it, thinks it's cool but has no clue how fatal the place can be, go there, and die).
    Good luck!

This is definitely not for everyone. It is very dangerous and at times deadly. It is great to visit and take photos but if you plan on jumping in, I’d recommend spending some time watching the locals and plan your exit route carefully. Enjoy!

irresponsible to invite visitors to such a dangerous place!! They see the locals and think they can jump in too not knowing where to jump and how to get back up. Worse - when the waves come and they freak out!!! Visitors - just watch from the rocks up above!!

We are not inviting anyone to jump. On the contrary, we warn of the dangers of the currents. And I agree with you 100% - visitors should only go there to enjoy the sites and watch from the rocks!
