The Type 59 Revisited in World of Tanks in 2023

- This tank once used to be one of the strongest, if not, the strongest Premium tank in the game. Since then, a lot of things have changed in World of Tanks. Let us take a moment and relive the Type 59 in 2023. It might still hold up!

Waited years to get this tank and I am glad I did. It’s definitely not as dominant as it was back in the day but in the right hands (as you have shown) you can still have an impact. It is just so flexible, it can scout, it can play as a pocket heavy, and with a camo crew you can be a TD when needed. Finally I can’t agree more that 185 mm pen is far too low for WOT 2023.
The type 59 has only lost a bit of its glow because of competition that has much better stats. As you mention it is still a very flexible tank. Most importantly it is a tank that I always enjoy playing. If they improved the AP penetration and maybe increased the shell velocity a bit, it would be even more enjoyable.

@@TheFrXion If they did that they need to as well buff the T-44-100 and Patton KR, Both sitting at around 190 pen, especially the Patton KR that doesn't even have mobility. It's already bad enough the the S Pershing, with PMM, has better pen on standard rounds then tanks that have +2 MM.

Yes! All of the old medium Premiums need to get a new coat. The patton Korea is horrible, but I still love it dearly and marked it 😂. I just three marked the Super Pershing and it has "good" pen if you compare it to the Type 59, or any other tier 8 mediums.
the hull used to hold well against the Soviet 122mm gun back then, but now the 122mm has been buffed and there are tanks with way way higher penetration in tier 8 and even tier 7. there are also same tier autoloading mediums spaming 300+ damage shots at you. type 59 is not OP, it is actually a bit underpower, you are good in one situation only, which is hull down, and the same goes for many other tanks.
the panther 88, i am not sure as of this video whether it was buffed already. it actually got buffed and the long 88 now has 280 alpha, which is crazy. and then i check, the same gun on the Tiger I is also changed to 280 alpha. this is insane, back then this gun was only hitting for like 230 or 240. it is fine, just need skills and quite situational because it has no armor.
what is fucked up is my FCM50T, when I bought the tank back then, it was the only premium tank that has more than 175mm of penetration, it has 212mm penetration on its 90mm gun. and now it still has the same 212mm penetration and the same 240 alpha damage. this is ridiculous how they buffed the panther 88 and the long 88 in general and make zero changes with the FCM. no armor, no camo, no alpha, poor penetration, average and even poor gun handling, and 300 DPM below panther 8.8. are you fucking kidding me? a medium do 17% more alpha damage and still has 300 DPM above my heavy???
I remember when I bought the mythical Type 59 and Type 62 in August 2013, which went on sale together, being the first time the Type 62 was made available.
It's been 10 years since that time, and it's always been one of my sentimental favorite tanks, because they were the first premium vehicles I bought in the game. Although, it is not a tank as competitive as before, but I can say that it feels very different, in those days it was a tank that was rather slow, it was difficult for it to reach its top speed, the gun was constantly missing shots, despite the fact that previously the aiming system was much better than it is now, the Type 59 is currently a very refined tank.
Unfortunately, today's tanks are much more efficient at their job, but I dare say that the Type 59 is a tank that has a unique essence, difficult to replicate. It is a tank that has a lot of personality, and despite not being the best, it becomes very fun to play with it. It is similar to driving an old car, it is missing a lot of things, but the experience of using it is very different and special.
Thats a very nice way of putting it. I always liked my Type 59, but I get sentimental when I play the Löwe and the T34.
@@TheFrXion Additionally, part of the money to buy them was a gift from my grandmother, it was also the first card purchase I made. At that time I was 17 years old. Those pair of tanks have witnessed many things throughout my life.
I remember the day when me and my friends used to run 3 of these in a platoon, and basically steamroll entire games unless we get unlucky with ammorack.

Type 59 after so many buffs is quite comfortable to play with. I mean, the handling is quite well: fast speed, accurate-ish gun and small profile. However, nowadays two core things are changing: armour and pen. Besides, alpha damage. 59 used to have decent armour but now it's a paper tank except for the turrent. 175mm pen used to be good but now 185 even after buff is lacking. 250 alpha is ok-ish but new meds are having either autoloaders or 320 even 400 alpha.
All in all the T8 has changed a lot. While 59 never needs to face T10 but things like 176 can murder T10 yet being T8. Nevertheless I love this tank, and it's still better than any poor techtree t8 meds anyways.
Very accurate assessment. I think the Type 59 just became an oldie tank that has been surpassed by better tier 8 premiums. I still enjoy the tank, but there are much better options available.
Christmas 2019 was when this was considered the best meium tank again, very workable armour, light tank speed and really great handeling gun... how the game has moved on since then...
Its just sad. Worst thing is the BZ 176 :(.
@@TheFrXion Yeah. Big chinese medium player here, and that tank just ruined it, especially for my WZ-120. You just can't afford to get spotted at all with guns like that at tier 8.
To be completely fair the only thing that is lacking severely is the penetration values. Up the pen values by let's say 15/10/15mm respectively and it will be great again, or at least somewhat comparable to an up armored CDC
I'd say it's rather power creeped these days. Not because it's a bad tank, but all the shit WG has been adding to the game. I mean here we are in our Hype 59 happy as a clam with our 185 pen and all of a sudden the big bad BZ-176 is in front of you and it's what 245mm frontal armor. On a corridor map. Might as well be shooting spit wads at him. I've been blasted enough in LTs by KV2's, which had to be blessed by the hand of Stalin himself, to have a healthy respect for derp guns. It's gotten to the point if I play T8 MTs, in terms of the Hype 59, T-44-100 and LIS that are all generally the same, I've even dropped the T-44-100 for the LIS. I still think the 44-100 is the better tank in most areas, except pen as the 44-100 is still sitting at 190. I as well don't feel like I should have to be gold spamming an entire game because WG decided to say screw balance, we want money.
I get where you are coming from, but I have managed to get out of the way of the BZ or I have been lucky enough that I usually do not face that many. It is a brutal reminder, everytime you meet a Bz 176, that you have been made obsolete by Wargamings greed. Still, I think if we can adapt our playstyle a bit we can still be succesful, even with BZ 176 running amok.

@@TheFrXion To be honest tanks like the Bourrasque made this tank irrelevant... It's armour does not help anymore, and low damage gun does not help either...
Yes, I agree with that sentiment. A lot of premium tanks have become completely obsolete.
THIS TANK IS A PILE OF SHIT. Anyone who says otherwise is not comparing it to all the other tier 8 mediums which are 10k times better than this trash tank. I decided to play it again just to see. It is unplayable. Tier 7s play better than it. It feels cumbersome compared to tanks like Bourasque and Progetto. Reload is way too long for the alpha it has. It just seems like you have to work 10 times harder to score and this is just not fun.

Maybe, but it might take a long while. It takes WG forever to fix buff and nerf vehicles. They are way too slow.
