How To Control Humidity When Growing Indoors

  • It’s important to to control humidity in any growing environment as it impacts the quality of crops, the growth of crops, and diseases in the farm. (Read the article here: university.upstartfarmers.com...)
    Different crops prefer different humidities, but optimal humidity usually runs from 60-85% for different crops. (But be sure to look it up for your crops specifically!)
    Too little humidity, and plants don’t get the inputs that they need for growth and metabolism. In this case, you might need to humidity your space.
    This is rare for most growers, although here in arid Wyoming, we do have a humidifier in our farm. We use a fairly large industrial indoor humidifier for every 500 square feet. Sizing a humidifier can be tricky, since it depends on crop type, transpiration, heat, evaporation, and more factors. There are some calculators related to this in Able.ag.
    Usually, growers won’t have to bother with humidifying a growing space, because plants function as little humidifiers themselves. Plants release water vapor through transpiration, a key part of their metabolism. This means that TOO MUCH humidity is a much more frequent problem.
    Too much humidity can cause disease and fungal pathogens. In this case, you need to know how to dehumidify. There are several options here:
    1. If you’re in an arid climate, then air exchange might to the trick to control humidity.
    2. Air conditioning dehumidifies by condensation.
    3. Dehumidifiers are available for both commercial and hobby applications.
    Often, growers need to cool a greenhouse as well. In this case, choose a method that makes dehumidification easier. For growers trying to cool their greenhouse using a cooling wall are adding humidity to the air. They aren’t very effective in humid areas.
    Sizing a DEhumidifier is also tricky. We recommend getting in touch with us to figure this out.
    Remember that humidity is tied to temperature. As temperature goes up, its ability to hold water increases also, and that usually means that warmer air is more humid. Sometimes, growers can manage humidity be lowering the temperature of their growing environment.

    Hello Bright Agritwch team,
    Can you help me size the appropriate size of dehumidifier for my system?
    I am thinking of building an indoor stacked type aquaponics in small facility sizing 3*3m=9m2 area. The Dwc system would have 400 heads of lettuce growing with 800 horizontal rectangular shaped fish tank. Also it has bug window facing south. In winter the room temp drops down to 18 degrees celsius inside facility while outside is -35 to 40 degres celsius at coldest. Now the indoor temp is fluctuating between 22 to 28 degrees during the day and night times.
    Thank you.

    Looking For some help please...
    I just have two plants (3 weeks old) in a 3x3x6 grow tent with only an exhaust fan (190 cfm). Multiple floor fans, small room dehumidifier that pulls 16 oz for every 24 hours. LED lights (600watts) Weather in this area jumps around. Some days really humid, others really dry. Usually the humidity stays within 50-68%, but lately it's been very humid outside, and my tent won't get any lower than 70%.... any suggestions on how to help the humidity stay at a solid 50-55%?

    When you turn on Lights you turn on heating , and when temperature goes up humidity goes down , or relative humidity .I guess big grows might behave differently but small ones in my experience have lower humidity with lights on .

    • @ZipGrowInc
      @ZipGrowInc  Рік тому

      Hi Nathan, there are a few ways of tackling a problem with higher relative humidity in your grow tent:
      1. Try installing a small fan for better air circulation within your tent space.
      2. Try reducing the amount of plants within your growing space. When plants are actively consuming light, water, and nutrients, they go through a process called “evapotranspiration”. Evapotranspiration is the process in which your plants release water molecules from the underside of their leaves called “stomata”. Depending on the crop, proper spacing can dramatically reduce the amount of humidity build-up in a growing space (and reduce the chances of fungal outbreaks from occurring)!

Although I don't know exactly what size Dehumidifier I need at least I have an idea how to start calculating size Maybe you can help. 15 square feet being exhausted plant uses one gallon per 3 days the internal temperatures 81 external temp is 69. RH wants to stick around 60 lights on/70 Plus off. I need to be around 50 preferably 45 even with the exhaust I can only get it down to 56RH.

    • @ZipGrowInc
      @ZipGrowInc  2 роки тому

      Glad you enjoyed it! In answer to your question, you may need to look at a dehumidifier, an exhaust fan is only going to reduce the humidity to the level of the air outside the room, because this is what is replacing the humid air that is exhausted. Depending on where you live, a Quest dehumidifier may be the right option or next step.

    • @Soilfoodwebwarrior
      @Soilfoodwebwarrior 4 роки тому

      70-85 f is where they thrive. Ya you need to get your temp up first step

  • @FijifunXP
    @FijifunXP 2 роки тому +1

    5:20 Wrong. You want to raise T when dealing with high RH. Temp and RH have an inverse relationship. Warming the air creates more volume of air space to hold the same amount of water vapor which equates to a lower percentage of water molecules in that given air space.
    Higher T, Lower RH.
    Lower T, Higher RH.

    • @ZipGrowInc
      @ZipGrowInc  2 роки тому

      Thank you for pointing that out @z Hawkins. You are correct. Nate said that backwards. Given a set amount of vapor in the air a higher temperature will equate to a lower RH than a low temperature will. Thus raising (and not lowering) temperature will bring RH down.

      Don't humidify. If it's still really low in your growing environment, the easiest thing is to wait until your crops are larger and more mature- most growing environments will become very humid once the plants are rocking and rolling. You'll find yourself fighting to bring it down more than you want to bring it up.
