This channel is gonna blow up...
I hope so ,we need more legitimate objective reviews of audio products
I hope you mean that in a good way! :)
Indeed
You could also say its gonna rokit
Get in on the ground floor
You have a really easy to listen to voice, Amir!
Are you saying he should do reviews in ASMR?
@@DEALUX ASMIR
I have never heard that compliment before! Thank you so much.
Yes indeed. Very pleasant!
It cannot be underestimated just how important your work is Amir. This kind of information was previously available only to manufacturers. Thank you very much. BTW, you would get many more hits if you were a subjective reviewer LOL.
Thanks Tony. It is very kind of you. I agree, subjectivist reviewers get a lot of attention especially with their nicer production values. ASR website is already hugely popular, having surpassed sites like stereophile so maybe objectivity can get masses to pay attention. :)
@@AudioScienceReview I was unaware that your website was so popular. That's good news. Especially in this time of denunciation of good science. We've got to get a handle on how to correct this problem. It's getting scary.
Just what I wanted to hear. Thanks for an informative and honest review.
I could legit listen to you talking all day. I'm sitting in my car and working on the sound system and instead of blasting Techno I'm playing the soothing voice of my current favorite scientist Amir. Please keep talking and keep making videos.
I found you when I decided to look into PS Audio equipment. Was also looking for some test proven budget equipment and both times you came up.
Appreciate it. Donation sent.
My new favourite channel, very easy to understand as Amir explain a lot of terms, procedures even for newbies, very soothing voice, great amount of work put into it. Thanks Amir :)
My pleasure. Thanks for the feedback. It means a lot to me.
Definitely learning more here than reading the reviews by myself, sensei! Great teacher.
Thank you. The freedom to explain things in words and my hands is great in video context.
as a producer/engineer, this is by far the best speaker review format! thank you, Amir!
I'm so happy i came across your channel before buying my next set of speakers. thank you for such a detailed review
Thanks, Amir. I enjoy your written reviews, and even more, your UA-cam reviews.
Really enjoy your channel! Keep up the good work.
Will do John. Thanks for watching and feedback.
Ey, you're the dude i keep watching the reviews of on almost literally everything on the market, lol, nice work. :D
One thing that I think when watching directivity measurements is that listening window size varies with proximity. A wide spread constant directivity sound is a necessity with nearfield monitors because small movements in your office chair will result in high angular offset. However at a distance they all sound very open due to a low direct/indirect hf content. A narrow beam of sound can make more sense here, because it sounds drier and your listening window is wide anyway.
Very good point.
One of the best monitors I owned were the krk v8s4 which these g4s are based on. In my measurements they dont have the port resonance and also no dip at 10khz. Overall their frequency response is insanely flat, much flatter than the g4 series. And they are just fun speakers to listen to, not bright, not dull. Also what speakers on the market can you buy right now with an actual kevlar tweeter? I would take the G4 over the jbl lsr and over the yamaha ns series.
I first heard these at a friends house who is an audio engineer I heard the first version and I really was impressed then I asked him how much and I couldn’t believe an affordable speaker can sound so good.
Can't wait to see the review of Gen 5
I usually dont like watching these kinds of videos but I got sad when the video ended :( one of the best reviews I’ve seen and I’m glad I got the G4s
That's the first proper speakers I owned. I honestly was impressed with them, so much so that I decided to return them and save for something bigger and more impressive. I bought Focal Aria 926 and paired it with Exposure 2010s2 but I couldn't get the same level of impressive sound despite the components being "audiophile" grade and the speakers being of tower design. I was only able to approach the same level of depth when I upgraded my amplifier to Exposure 3010S2. What I am trying to tell, if you look for a decent pair of bookshelf speakers for your desktop - these are beauties for affordable price.
hello, I tried the eq notch and like the way it sounds! Now I just have to find a way to use it without disturbing the balance of my mix out of the DAW, the video was helpful thanks!
Fantastic work, thank you! Would love to also see the KRK Rokit 8G4, YAMAHA HS8, JBL LSR305 and others that offer great sound and value for the price. Maybe something like "the best sounding studio monitors under $300"
hello Amir,
I have a pair of ROKIT 5 G4 speaker for few months now, which I got for my Yamaha PSR-SX700 keyboard. Before that, I sometimes attached keyboard to my Yamaha receiver and listened on JBL HLS810 speakers (sounds great!). But because that's kinda unpractical for me, I decided to get smaller monitors -I tell that, so you know a bit of my background.
KRK says frequency response is 43Hz-40kHz and that's it: supposedly, 5" KRK is better than my 8" JBL?! I notice that such practice (incomplete/deceiving specs) has become a norm nowadays. I'm sure manufacturers do have complete/usable data available, however they prefer to treat customers as idiots. I have some (hobby) experience with loudspeakers and so, when I decided for ROKIT 5, I knew that specified frequency range can't be "real". But I bought them anyway (I needed something small) and I got what I was assuming.
And your review confirms that perfectly!
ROKIT 5 sounds good, but there isn't going on much at frequencies below 50Hz and so a big part of lowest octave (33-62Hz) is lost. In short, now I'm looking for a subwoofer and I am deciding between KRK S8G4 and S10G4 -waiting mainly because of incomplete data. S10G4 seems to be a safe bet, but as is usually the case, I wish the smallest that's "good enough" and price also plays an important role. There are other brands, but I like KRK because the cutoff frequency is also applied to output connectors. Means, I could keep low frequency distortions on ROKIT 5 under control -by setting crossover frequency higher than 50Hz.
Sadly, nowhere I could find KLIPPEL data for KRK subwoofers and I can only rely on "luck" -and I don't like that.
Thank you very much for the content you provide!!
Bogdan
Wow, what a wonderful review! I was looking for an inexpensive aramid composite kevlar monitor to pair with a 10" Glass aramid composite Woofer, and Googling "krk rokit 5 g4 frequency response curve" popped up your article and then this wonderful analysis and knowledgeable review. I'm sold. Room EQ wizard and the $25 Behringer condenser reference mic, paired with the PEACE EQ will mean an inexpensive yet totally accurate mixing (and listening) setup.
Thank you Amir!
Thanks for the detailed review.
One thing I wanted to know is if you have taken any kind of latency measurement of these speakers.
Thanks again!
Amazing, as always
Hey Amir, Thanks you for your work... it clears the path from rocks! I have a pair of Genelecs 8010A and I'm eager to see your interpretation of the measuments... The explanation captured in video, on top of the forum explanation adds more value, undertanding and clarification for end users who have a glimpse of superficial understanding like me. Thank you very much from Argentina!
Thank you Amir for this very comprehensive video review. I'm in the market for some monitors and you really gave practical and good information about these.
The only question that matters (and i don't see anyone doing it)is when you put it in your room and adjust it using your phone, and you master a song with those settings, will it sound good in the car and any other stereo. That is the golden question, because that is the whole idea of this speaker's EQ.
Good work Amir. I have a pair of Rokit 6 Gen 3s. Mine have regular transistor amps inside - which get warm. I believe this new Gen 4 have class-D amps + the on-board DSP. I have to EQ mine in my PC preamp / sound interface first, then they sound great. If I don't EQ them, then there seems to be a big hump in the bass at about 140Hz (or it's the room / corner positioning that's causing it).
ps. Great that you've started this UA-cam channel! I just subscribed.
That's interesting that you mention temperature, as for me sound behaves different according to room temperature.. like recording in the summer when it's hot out and the room is hot with all the gear on way different response (I found better, faster, bass carries stronger) than recording winter time trying to keep the room warm enough.
Darn your presentation was clear! Not saying I understood all the tech aspects, but it made me subscribe, so I guess you nailed it! :D
I wanted yahamas but got these and I’m not disappointed. I listen to every genre and these bump too!
Excellent review, Amir. Very helpful. Thank you!!
Really appreciate this review. Scientific and expert; thank you.
Excellent review, as always!
Amir, Please setup an Amazon affiliate link for purchases! This information is very valuable and I would love for you to have some credit for the purchases that people end up making from your reviews! Thanks again!
I bought the rp5g4s and use your PEQ setting which I agree rounds things off a bit. Thanks for all your expertise on so so many products.
I have one question related to what you said about the volume levels and when distortion arrives.
I have these set up in a 3 metre triangle in a 5x5 room. I have another (5x10 with stone backwall and sloping ceiling) room in my house where they sound much better with a 4x4 listening triangle, but go too eadily into the distorted area because I guess they need to be pushed past their limit.
Would buying two more rp5g4s qive me the volume I need without going into distortion, and if so, what position do you recommend to the 'twin'?
Sorry if this is an ignorant question - but I'm ignorant.
You’ve done great work here. Thx!
I added the PEQ adjustments just as you did, I couldn't reliably detect the difference, but then I don't turn them up that loud, they're less than a metre from my ears.
sometimes eq is weird and doesnt apply an easy way to check is to turn the preamp all the way down which makes it obvious
Thanks for an excellent, well-informed review.
Paul's designs come from NRC research so in theory should be good. As with Ray though, I have heard them at shows many times but not once walked away with the demo being impressive.
Those are the ones I have lost actually. They barely return my emails if at all. All other requests such as samples to measure have been turned down.
Would be awesome if actually you could knock over the sides and front of cabinets, to actually check for the resonsnce/ absortion amohnt on the cabinets
Amazing how much content you're putting up here.
:) It is time consuming on top of my existing workload but given the value people are getting from them, I will continue to produce them.
Fantabulously explained.
I am glad. Thank you for letting me know.
Dear Amir,
Could you please tell me if I should get these or JBL 305 for budget nearfield active listening.
PS: I love science
Only way to judge that is by listening to them both : )
One thing to have in mind when your getting active monitors/speakers is that they all have x amount of self noise from the amps.
Some have more, some are really well made.
KRK has a lot to my opinion.
That doesn't mean that you would be affected by it, it's just my opinion and I'm probably i bit more sensitive to that self noise than others.
Ive had both. The jbls are slightly flatter but it just sounded like a cold clinical speaker and I never fell in love with it. I had the rp7 afterwards and I really loved them and eventually got the v8s4 which measure even flatter and dont have the small port resonance and no dip at 10khz, just perfectly flat. I sold them to my bro because he really wanted them when I moved and got something even bigger. I just preferred the overall sound character of the krk over the jbl but honestly you cant go wrong with either.
Thank you for making this!
Great video Amir. Still wondering why did it take you so long to start a UA-cam channel. Anyways better late than never. The content you provide was a void in the UA-cam audiophile community for all this time.
All you could watch in youtube was people saying things like "this speaker or dac sound "crunchy, munchy, space, sparkle ". Not that I'm discarding these kind of analogies but every review needs an objective baseline aswell in the form of measurements.
"why did it take you so long to start a UA-cam channel?"
He was probably waiting for more grey hair for that distinguished look.
@@davecook8378 😂
There's a couple of people that are at least somewhat objectivist -- Joe 'N Tell has been slowly working towards that, although he's more mixed than Amir and doesn't have the engineering background to do true measurements. Erin's Audio Corner is strait objectivist, and just bought a kippel although he is still learning it. He did a great series on inexpensive subs (measured outside).
@@MsSgent to be clear, I am not straight objectivist. In fact, my entire goal has been to provide data and subjective analysis to help people understand how the two correlate.
Thanks Berly. I guess the simple answer is that I had no idea you all would find them so useful! :) It also too me a while to get a video setup I was happy with it that worked in my constrained space. Definitely agree with you with some of those other videos. I routinely watch them before posting my reviews and have no idea how to conclude anything from what they say. "It is a detail king but not bright. Bass is a bit soft but don't think there is no good bass there."
Excellent review!
Another great review! Thanks!
Please review the new Kali Audio IN5 coaxial monitors 👏🏽 Excellent video and analysis
Hello I just found your videos and reviews, I have a question: I am looking for a pair of monitors for mixing my own music so I was wondering what pair of monitors should i get: Adam audio t5v/t7v , KRK rokit 5 g5 or Focal alpha 65 evo? Thank you for what are you doing!
Tremendous work. Thanks.
Hello Amir! I came here from audiosciencereview, I love your reviews! I would like to ask your advice, I have a budget that is enough to buy the JBL 305, these Rokit krk 5 and the Yamaha HS5. Unfortunately in my country the Adam T5Vs are very expensive and are out of my budget. If you had to choose one of the three, to mix and master electronic music, which one would you choose? :)
Thanks Armin - I very much enjoyed and believe I learned a few things from this review, especially your explanation of the measurements - I like that you described your thoughts from your listening tests too - but I was left wondering when you did the listening, were you playing the single speaker or were you playing the pair in stereo mode? I would have appreciated a listening comment about imaging and perhaps your take on how they project the sound stage, budget speakers or not - - - - my question might prompt us to part ways again only in that if you were happy with the measurements that you would assume (as would I) decent performance from a pair. Armin, be bold, I've heard you say that you consider yourself to be a trained listener, an audiophile in my book - tell us what you're hearing - THEN do the measurements - I'm fine with measuring being your primary approach but I also think you could fool yourself (to use your own analogy) into thinking they must sound good because they measured good - - hey, and maybe you do listen first so if that's the case tell us your listening impressions first - I don't think it's fair to measure first, like, or not like what you measure, THEN confirm your measurements with your listening - - it's sort of going against your theory of the brain messing with what we "think" we hear based on our own biases.
Just clarifying...this is a powered speaker, but not an active? Great job. Loving the videos!
They are active bi-amped speakers.
@@AudioScienceReview Thanks. Glad to get that clarified.
Super review. Thank you! How would you rate them in between JBL LSR 305p and Adam T5V?
Also, I'd recommend you to get your hands on some RCF Ayra Pro 5. I listened to them AB'd with some Focal Alpha 5 and they blewed them away.
I think the newer inp Kali is flatter within 3db, but it also has a pronounced bass up to 100k, which is putting me off. But this one doesn't seem to go as low either.
Inqinder why KrK hasn't updated this one.
Would you do a review for Tannoy Gold 5
which speaker brand will be trashed next - stay tuned. Not Harmon
Plain-speak explanation? FINALLY. I LOVE IT!!!!
Amir, what is the likely effect on floor response if the units are sat on the foam baes on a large desk, angle slightly upwards? I was pleasantly surprised by two things when I got them, how good the bass sounded (I just used a crude test of a dB meter and a sine wave generator and eyeballed it, probably large uncertainty involved but at least an indication of validating what I was hearing, and also how good they sound off axis.
impressive thanks a lot my question is this works also with Krk 7 g4 !
thx again
Hi! Nice technical review! Could you give me your insight if this is compared with the Kanto PU6 in terms of sound quality
Thanks to Amir, I have corrected my ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 speakers with my Yamaha RX-V3800 parametric eq...
Should I EQ my 3020i ? ( i'm using a loxjie a30 if matters)
Yeah I felt krks had boosted/harsh highs, also wasn't a fan of the static noise/hiss at idle
I just heard that these particular models have an overheating problem and they shut off or go on standby. Have you experienced anything like that?
Amir, can you do a review on Adam Audio T5V?!?! Please and thank you!
I have done a text review on it already: www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/gr-research-x-ls-encore-kit-speaker-review.14957/
As I note there, it is a superb speaker other than boosted treble. If you bring that down per EQ I suggest, then it is excellent.
Thanks for the review! A few years ago I wanted to buy one of these speakers (albeit it was the larger driver version). Do you mind sharing your test playlist? :)
I don't have them put together in a way to share. When I do, I will post them.
@@AudioScienceReview Appreciate it!
Hello Amir, really detailed and clear review. I am thinking of buying these speakers and I am wondering which DAC do you recommend for them? I would use them as a 2.0 system for my PC and I would love to hear your opinion.
Also, I'm interested in whether the KRK RP7 is better than these and whether the buzzing is more noticeable with them, considering that the speakers will be on the table, and I don't want that to be unbearable.
Thanks for your time and all the best.
Hi, it’s been a long while, so what did you choose for your DAC? Are there any buzzing?
Dang, I was looking into Yamaha HS7 and Adam T7V but... this review has made me think that these even cheaper monitors might actually do the trick for me. What to dooooo?
Hey Amir, is it possible to make a review on Presonus Eris E 5? not the XT. Thank you.
Is it possible to put them on a wall mount?
It would be awesome, if you have time, if you built a GR Research product, maybe the 2 way and do a test on them!
I have tested one of his speakers, the XLS Encore Kit: www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/gr-research-x-ls-encore-kit-speaker-review.14957/
As you see, it is not actually as good as the ROKIT 5 but still acceptable.
@@AudioScienceReview very cool. He has a NX-Studio speaker coming out, that I am very curious about. The goal with this one coming out is a ultra transparent and flat response
I thought these speakers sounded great. My only (big) complaint was how early they begin to distort. I was hoping they could replace my RP6 G2's as I'm trying to downsize my setup.
please review the Barefoot Footprint 02 and Output Frontier's powered by Barefoot!
Hey Amir, the test tracks you mentioned in the video ? Do you have a playlist or something, that we could check out. Do you use the same tracks for your headphone reviews ? Any other active speakers that can compete or are even better then this ones, for around the same amount of money ?
Hi Mark. I have not post my playlist. I do share the tracks in the text reviews from time to time. Shame we can't play them due to copyright issues. On active speakers, Adam and Kali make excellent low cost actives. As does JBL with LSR series. I have reviewed a ton of them on ASR website. Here is an index of them to easily sort by price, recommendation, etc: www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?pages/SpeakerTestData/
You should have Dr. Olive send you those LSRs, hah
Some reviews start and end with "these speakers are dope!" This intelligent scientific analysis is most welcome and ultimately leads me to conclude "these speakers are dope!"
Tannoy gold 5 is very powerfull monitor. way more than krk. maybe it get less distortion ?
This is off the subject. Denafrips DACs, are you going to review one or all or none. Your opinion matters as you address the science others overlook. It’s up to you of course. I bought the Hidizs S9 on your recommendation. It’s high on your list and that matters. The Apogee Groove is also a consideration. Have you ever heard ProAc EBT(speakers)? What do you think? Would you consider auditioning a pair? You are a no nonsense guy. What audio gear makes your ears sing?
Great video
Thanks Anthony. Appreciate you watching and commenting.
Can you compare these to the Presonus Eris E5 XT's? From what I can tell listening to Digital Stereography's video they sound very similar through my Senny HD 560S. What do you think? Is there a chance?
www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/presonus-e5-xt-active-speaker-review.13436/
More v-shaped.
This doesn't quite answer your question, but.... I have the rp5g4 and the eris 3.5
I bought the rp5 then three months later the presonus - I instantly recognised that I hade made a huge mistake. My ears seem to have developed an emotional relationship with the rp5s that they don't with the little eris'
As Amir said the krks will blow away most every multimedia speaker, and I class the eris in that category. But maybe the 5" ones are a quantum leap away from the 3.5"?
Not sure this helps - I guess after 3years you have already made your choice.
Hi Amir, Can you talk about surround processors that have balanced output?
Sure. I have tested a number of them.
Yes, for the money it cost, looks a tasty deal.
This guy is awesome. That is all.
Instant subscriber here.
hope to see a comparison with focal alpha 50 it cost the same
The focal alpha 50 cost 50 bucks more than the krks per monitor
I got a white pair. The white colorway really lifts the veil. 😂
I wish you'd tested the Adam A3X so I had some objective grounds to compare, by the way!
Amir, would you say that this speaker would benefit more from a sealed design and maybe some cabinet bracing?
I think you would loose too much bass if you sealed it. In larger enclosures, I have become a fan of sealed designs like Neumann KH310. See: www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads/neumann-kh-310a-review-powered-monitor.17723/
Not cheap though.
So... reputable content creators don't mention that there's a hiss in these... at all. I don't understand the disconnect between some people's videos and yours or Z Review's. Some people's G4s have a nasty white noise in their tweeter but you, probably the most reputable of measurement gurus, don't mention a hiss at all. Do these speakers actually hiss? I'm seriously considering building a huge Atmos system comprised entirely of the Rokit 10-3 loudspeakers. Seems like they're a value you just can't beat with good cinema SPL.
Is their anyone who could help me out with a question i have about my krk rokit 5’s please?
Lol why not just ask the question instead of asking if anyone can answer a question you have yet to ask.
@@trueredlucky954 if i buy a little amplifier for my krk’s and put them in the amplifier can i somehow put a subwoofer in asswell working with the amplifier??
@@noisedeckofficial if the connections are there then yes, just check the specs, btw rokit got a pretty funky sub.
so i bet you have the best ears in the market to do these reviews ? lol
was this tweeter a bit intense and dangerous for anyone else after 2 months of listening to these for long periods of use m ears began to ringing. did this occur for anyone. The yellow tweeter definitely means danger and caution yield and so on. A real warning label would be appreciated to state to listen with caution even though black and yellow means caution the box clearly states less listening fatigue
It may be a "good" speaker for the monies worth, but it's not a good speaker in big picture. Besides, these measurements don't tell even half of the story about how a speaker actually sounds. There is lot more to it than just frequency response and directivity. That dome tweeter clearly has break up modes in the middle of the audio band which weren't addressed in any level. As an example what I'm talking about.
