- "Lush Life"
Words and Music by Billy Strayhorn
The Billy Strayhorn masterpiece done for you here in my version after the recording of Sarah Vaughn.
For people who may not be up on American slang, "Lush" doesn't mean 'luxurious' here. It means "drunk". Just sayin.
My arrangement. Learned by ear. I have nothing written down.
Taylor NS54-ce, hybrid classical
Standard tuning
D'addario Pro Arte normal tension nylon strings
The finer guitar makers should consider "gifting" an occasional guitar to you as to have your skilled playing express the true greatness of their finer instruments when in your hands!
Beautiful playing, beautiful sounding instrument. BRAVO!
In 2022... Wow, this is magnificent. Lush Life is one of the greatest jazz standards of all time. I've been searching for the best version, and your rendition @troubleclef is up there with the greatest. Much love.
That was some composer Tony,Billy Strayhorn, fabulous composition, beautifully played in a very intimate Jazzy way, with fine subtle Jazz chords. This would a Jazz club very well also Tony, great performance, enjoyed a lot, greetings Vic.
Thanks for making this world a more beautiful place.
One of the most beautiful and difficult songs ever and your playing is sublime.
Soft and fluid ..... A listening pleasure
lifted this one pretty much straight off the Sarah Vaughn with orchestra version, minus the intro and obligatory orchestral fills. glad you dug it.
I love this song and love fingerstyle guitar. This man does a fabulous job.
Just had my Twelve o Clocktail. A work of art this is !
You ARE an artist indeed !! Congratulations !
excellent as always!
Tony, a great melody and a great performance, great listening.

Wow beautiful arrangement!! Thanks for sharing!👏👏👏👏🎼
Superb interpretation....bravo!
Been scanning UA-cam for LushLife guitar renditions from which I can learn. An upvote for yours seems inadequate. Your arrangement is clean, but you've captured the real sense of the song, in my opinion, with all of it's complexities encompassed in a deceptively simple styling. Thanks for putting this out here.
veryvery good. What a pleasure , thank you !
That's so nice......beautiful.
Dreamy. Music with my first cup of coffee. Thanks Tony, you are a master.
I agree, excellence once again! Love your taste in music too! God given gift to all of us. Stay healthy and keep em coming.
Great tune, great arrangement and interpretation by great player. Bravo !
For me there are two best versions of this fabulous standards. Latifah and yours! Great job, I 'm now begining to understand the hardness to arrange that theme! Many thanks for playing it for us!
Great comment thank you 🙏🏾
Excellent arrangement. Just right. Very tasteful with an emphasis on the beautiful melody.
beautiful. thank you for posting this!!
Beautifully done. A masterful take on a famously difficult song. Thank you.
Very beautiful/colorful arrangement of one of my favorite songs. Just amazing. Hits the spot
on an otherwise dull afternoon.
Man. So beautiful
I do read music. Why did you think I didn't? Because I still also learn things by ear. Some people think there are only two types of musicians: strictly ear and strictly score. Why is that? Specialization. I believe it's useful to be both. You imply that if I had a score I wouldn't have to rehearse. That may be true for the elites. I ain't one of those. But it still also means that something would have to be written out first, right? I don't choose to write, so no one can ask me for tab
I'm just glad I posted mine before listening to Joe Pass and Ella. Man, he makes it clear that there are many many more harmonic possibilities in here that i haven't considered. I would've got discouraged.
Thank you, sir!
great music and guitar playing. awesome work. ur sounding great. ill try to learn your arrangement for learning the song. thanks for uplooading.
Beautiful music!!!*******
Brilliant!

magnificent work.
Beautiful, and brilliant playing. This goes into my fav. list.
Thanks for this one....brings back fond memories and the rendition is superb!
That sounded wonderful!
Brilliant! and so perfectly executed!
Surely the jazz standard with the most number of chords? Such a beautiful melody and those world weary lyrics all from a teenager. Loved your solo version. Well done.
This is great. It sounds so beautiful. Great job. I will work on learning this beautiful song.
Pure bliss from beginning to end. I cannot get enough of this genre. I followed you for the first three or so chords then I just set my guitar down and listened again. Genius, Tony...
That's quite beautiful . . .
Sweet sound soothes my senses.
Absolutely beautiful!
Beautiful work! I want to learn to play this!
Such patience! Good expression and a nod to Strayhorn's own interpretation. Really nice :)
Thank you for giving me peace of mind, sir
Totally amazing Tony as always...Mind blowing

What a lovely piece! and so very romantic on this quiet Sunday evening! Beautifully played, Tony! Regards!
I love this! I'm just starting to learn this song, this video gives me some inspiration and ideas for soloing on it. Very good, I love it!
What a treat, Tony.... As I listened, your interpretation made me reminisce about all the old "jazz clubs" in my life. Then I read your notes .... yeah, this took me to Chicago and I conjure up some small place, lower level, piano bar and sad "torch singer" with blue lights but not many... Well ... Nice work, Tony! You really captured the mood of this one. --Jack in San Diego
So nice ! Thank you.... So many chords to remember !!! God !! 😂😂😂
Wow... simply wow. This is a beautiful arrangement...
thanks
Haooo ... It is played with great emotion, it's beautiful, congratulations!
Jo
Great, Tony! Wonderful smooth sounding guitar and perfect playing! I was caught from the first second!
Cheers,
Bernd
Tony, I swear, you must know everything there is to know about that guitar neck !
Great stuff !
At last I'll be one of the first to praise one of your beautifully interpreted and arrranged pieces!
¡Muchas felicidades y sigue tocando!
thanks so much. cheers
I'll have to check it out.
this is amazing
Tony....well, just absolutely stunning. But then I've come to expect nothing less from you. I always hook up my studio monitor speakers to my laptop when it's time to listen to you because I know that the notes will dance around the room and then some....(and that even comes from a girl who loves Martin guitars and not Taylors....haha). I have a feeling that you could make ANY guitar sound like a million bucks. Totally enjoyed this. :-)
Lovely version and touch as usual, Troubleclef ! It works in 'C', too, as you so deftly demonstrate . I found an old transcription of the Joe Pass 'Virtuoso' version in 'A' some years back from a "Guitar One' magazine and eventually managed to nail it , but without the tab I wouldn't have a clue ! Thanks again.
Bravo, smooth feel, great blues.
Gorgeous.
This is a really great arrangement of this tune. I am very impressed.
CHARLES TRICHE.
Nice play ! I like Billy Strayhorn too , and play " Take the A train " !
"Angeber"--look it up--ha ha
so Many elements to this song...and your playing is ...what it is...great! lol
Nice (mood) changes.

I listen to this over and over again and am stunned by your ability and your talent for being able to arrange by ear. Now if you ever fancy writing it down in standard notation for this 65 year old jazz and guitar fan, then I won't be offended! ;-0 David in Yorkshire.
Wow. Just wow.
just scratching the surface, truth to tell. glad you liked it.
so relax
thank you
Thanks for posting
Thanks for the input!
Most enjoyable!
Great suggestion. I'll see. I do like that song.
Thanks Murilo. Not sure if there are any charts for it. I worked it out from Sarah Vaughn's recording.
Very nice!
gorgeous. best version ive found so far. strong intuition. post up some tabs? please
I share with all my feelings...

~Janie

thanks, guitar gal. I'll have to break out my Martin again soon. been over a year probably just sitting in it's box.
thanks!
thats love
I'm all for it. Where do I sign up?
thanks for watching
well i only work on one or two at a time and play them for a while and get them wrong over and over until they half work out. cheers.
Nice. Very Nice.
Julio Astacio, Jr. thanks!
Beautiful! could you play Naima from John Coltrane?
You're so talented. I don't understand how you learn all these songs by ear...
you left out something: a couple of stiff drinks. :D Thanks, Jack.
Toroughly enjoyable.
Trebleclef ___ When I research a piece of music, I listen to many musicians, playing the same piece... whenever I see your name, you always sound better than the rest. 'Just saying, "Thanks for being there".
Great arrangement! I was thinking of trying to arrange the piece into A major but seeing your version in C major I can see this is a great key - the open E string works perfectly for the B section. I first came across your channel a few weeks ago when I was looking for a version of Canto de Ossanha. Amazing how many videos you've done and of course to such a high quality - do you play gigs as well?
thanks. I don't gig. just a hobby.
Não sou Brasileiro, não. Sou Americano (do Norte). Obrigado pra assistir.
