- Rick Baker is a retired special make-up effects creator and actor, mostly known for his creature effects and designs. He won the Academy Award for Best Makeup seven times from a record of eleven nominations.
This episode made me so happy. I'm very happy that Joe is interviewing people that do a wide variety of things. The past two weeks of the show has been great.

People like this are the unsung heroes of the entire film industry. Greatly underappreciated!! Great podcast as usual Joe
Well 7 Academy Awards... maybe not so unsung...definitely acknowledge by his peers.
Adam Moore WELL SAID!!!
So true, well said, kind regards Richard U.K
Rick Baker - 7 Academy Awards, "unsung"
I’m glad Joe is interviewing more people who make movies, they are always interesting podcasts. I’d love to see Tarantino on here, Scorsese and Paul Thomas Anderson
Hell yeah!
Yeah Tarantino would be interesting, gotta touch on the foot fetish.
Paul Verhoeven
Or how about bring someone to tell the people about the abysmal state of the economy and the criminal, curropt banking system.
Marc Maron has countless incredible interviews with legends of film. William Friedkin is one of his best interviews.
How can anyone not like this?
Rick Baker is a master at what he does.
Agreed. - To be honest - Who could DISLIKE any of the interviews that Joe Rogan hosts? I've seen some that haven't interested me much, but I still respect the shit out of it.
Yeah, I love the story of a guy who find his passion early and just does that, then becomes a master at it!
It's a cool interview, but the guy's voice is so ridiculously soothing it puts you to sleep if you don't change the channel. He should do sleep hypnosis videos.
Same question as who would dislike heavy metal music. Billions people billions opinions.
When I was a teenager I got a hold of Bob Baker he's a master marionette puppet artist.
Through a couple times contacting Mr. Baking the conversation some time went into discussion about Rick Baker. which was brought up mainly becuz their project with Dino De Laurentiis movie.
Bob Baker was also involved in the remake of this mechanical 50 ft King Kong movie.
He was nice enough give me a direct studio number to call Rick Baker... Rick had answer the phone and ask me few questions then put me on hold for around two whole hours and never came back.
Of course I got a punishment for making an expensive long distance phone call.
this man has the most relaxing voice to listen to.
Don't you think it's just amazing that Baker knew stop motion animator Ray Harryhausen?
Ray was also the master of ball and socket model building.
Agreed!

I don't think modern crowds can truly comprehend how revolutionary the werewolf transformation scene was in An American Werewolf in London.
ikr, still amazing to this day. Blew my mind when I was a teenager. The guy is and always will be a legend
it was huge
Can you explain? Modern Crowdboi here
That whole movie was revolutionary.....A violent monster, horror, comedy........Unheard of.
Wish he would continue funding his own movies, even lower budget they would still beat the **** out of the cgi competition. And possibly reignite the passion for that style of makeup/movie making.CGI is just too sleek and pretty for me.
Rick Baker may be the only person who can fix Artie Langes nose.
This really made me laugh out loud
Oh shit! Lol. That's a good one. Hahaaa
Michael Jackson nose, here arti comes...
😂 so meta
Lololol
For a creative genius, he's so humble, such a nice guy.
I’d say 90% of creative geniuses are humble
i think because in creative industry like art and stuff you really need to build yourself from the ground up. you won't inherit anything
I think you're both right.
Man, I don't know about humble. I kind of got annoyed at all his rants on everyone else in Hollywood doing it wrong. He pulled no punches. He kept insisting that everything would just be better if he was given the creative space to do what he wanted. I get the sentiment, but at the end of the day he was still an employee, getting paid to do what he was supposed to do, and overseen by those who were signing his checks.
@@ichoozjc I meant more when it came to his own work... I don't know, but I suspect his complaints of Hollywood may well be valid...
I met Mr Baker at a convention when I was 13 and even though he had a line out the door he took the time to give me some life advice and set me on a path to becoming a make up artist. It wasn't ment to be but I use that same outlook and attitude on my current endeavors. Very kind humble man along with John Landis and Wes Craven. I've been very lucky to have had some incredible life experiences and been surrounded by talented inspiring people.
That’s a great story! Hope you are doing well ☺️
That’s Awesome!!
This was a great episode, to hear Rick talk so enthusiastically about something he loves is really refreshing.

Just started to listen to this podcast as I'm a huge fan of Rick's work but an even bigger fan of John Carpenter... great suggestion! (hope Joe or Jamie sees your comment)
John would never shut up about past regrets and how awful the studio system is. He's the Martin Sorcese of independents.
This podcast reminds me of conversations with my father-in-law. He's a pianist who works in Hollywood. He's got so many great stories about what went on behind the scenes in old movies.

Rick Baker, Rob Bottin, Tom Savini and Stan Winston - the four horsemen of practical fx. Facts.
Don't forget Dick Smith! Without him, none of them would be where they were at and the entire industry would be behind. They've all agreed during their careers that Dick Smith was the greatest make-up artist that ever lived and a huge mentor and inspiration.
Rob Bottin was a master

At that time they ate less and needed less stuff. You just typed a comment on your computer or your phone and that is an example of how many things we have today. We don't struggle like they did. That's why 1 salary isn't enough for us. Because our generations are fat.

This interview has 96% less DMT discussion than usual, I'd like to lodge a complaint with simian management.
Haha. There's no mention of Goggins, JiuJitsu, Sensory deprivation tanks or Elk hunting either 20 minutes into this. That ain't right.
That’s because Joe really likes and wants to hear what Rick Baker has to say and there’s nothing to say or rebuttal to because you’re listening to a man that Joe loves and loves his art and work.

Rick Baker is one of my role models. I’m a professional makeup artist. When I was younger and I saw An American Werewolf In London, I was hooked. I love my job, I love my community, and I freakin love you Rick Baker xoxoxox
Jenna van der Merwe damn right Jenna. I love this podcast and it’s so cool to hear Rick talk about his life and career. I’ve loved Rick and his work since I was a kid. Have you ever read any of the old Fangoria magazines? So many interviews with Rick.
MassiveEntertainmnet I haven’t read the old Fangoria interviews, I think I will now! I hear all the time about how makeup artists had to read through Fangoria to learn new techniques and also discover other artists, and that’s how they found work through new connections. We’re so lucky nowadays with the internet and social media, so much is at our fingertips.
That’s awesome Jenna! You gotta take inspiration from the best!

Rick Baker and Rob bottin seriously made my childhood beyond magical. The amount of terror, fascination, curiosity, and utter joy that those men created in me from a very young age was unequalled when it came to movies. Being a kid in the 1980s when these fantastic creatures and beings were made it really made the movies that much better. I do not for the life of me understand how even today some of these visual affects get made. Every now and then a movie like dark city or the matrix or Aquaman comes along and the affects are spectacular, but for every one of those there is 50 jar jar Binks type creatures made in awful movies. And there have been some recent Rick Baker makeup affects that I thought were kinda bad too like men in Black and a few others that relied too much on the cgi instead of Rick's magic.
Rick Baker is simply Rick Baker no filter, no bullshit, just Rick Baker...it's inspiring to see an artist be an artist.
I'm glad everyone is finally getting hip to what a proper interview is.

Ray was also the master of foam latex ball and socket model building. The 7th Voyage of Sinbad was one's his best stop motion animation.
Rick is just a kind person with the ability of a Michelangelo. What a talent.
Famous Monster of Filmland. I bought that magazine for years in the 60’s. Don Post masks were on every kids Christmas lists but most of us were poor and $35 then is like $500 today.
That mask to his immediate right is unbelievable for 1966.
I used to get some of the last issues for a quarter apiece, usually covering Star Wars or The Empire Strikes Back.
Rob Bottin would be another great one to have on. The Thing had some of the best practical effects ever!
Rob's kind of disappeared since the start of the 21st century.
yeah, its a toss up between the Thing and American Werewolf as GOAT, imho

You guys dont appreciate this guy enough he is a GENIUS
Most people do. Gremlins 2 was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Nothing can replace the awe I've felt in what I was watching and the empathy I've felt toward essentially an artwork come to life. Every movie this guy was involved in topped the previous production. He basically grew the industry of make-up artists with each project raising the bar higher and higher until the age of CGI with first Jurassic Park and next the Gollum. The Mummy with particle physics in CGI but Rick Baker is the grandfather of FX.

This is the first ever podcast by Joe, I have ever heard and it was so good. I am a huge fan of Rick and his work. And I had the rare opportunity to meet him in person at a showing of Harry and The Hendersons at the Hollywood theater in Portland, OR sometime last year and it was a dream come true seeing Rick and getting to shake his hand. He is one of many masters of makeup effects and of art form that is sadly dying right before our eyes. And if you are a fan of Rick's definitely pay the price to pick up his two volume book Metamorphosis. It is well worth the price you pay and then some for a fan of Rick's. It even has pictures from his cancelled project Night Skies.
Huge props to Joe though having Rick on his show and allowing Rick's wonderful stories to be recorded for prosperity and capturing his kindness and genuine love for making monsters.
