This is music, the man’s talent, for the soul. This man is a gift to the entire world from the heavens 🙏.
As an accomplished professional pianist who plays this piece here are my views: yes it's played fast, it usually is played about 96 bpm (the first part and the last part and he only played the first two pages then repeated). He also transposed it up a half step. However, Rick is one of the best keyboardists/pianists on the planet. He is a progressive rock legend and I've heard him play many amazing things; his technique is impeccable. Also, if you noticed, he is reading from what looks like a hand-made chart. Clair de Lune, if played in concert pianist style, or tradition, has to be memorized. Yet, this was not what he was going for. It was more of an intimate and self-stylized performance of a greatly beloved piece of music. And, I was over-joyed to be able to hear this performance. If one is going to judge things, judge them in the proper context, you'll probably live a happier life...
Beautifully put..
I never said he had impeccable technique for a concert pianist. He's not a concert pianist, he's a prog. rock keyboardist who doesn't claim to be a a concert pianist.
Here's an example of my "lunch time" technique. ua-cam.com/video/uba9Vvn09lc/v-deo.html
Thanks much for the complements!!! As for Rick's technique - listen to his piano on Cat Steven's Morning Has Broken or organ solo on Roundabout, superb feel and musicality on both. As I said - he's not a concert pianist, whole different genre. Interesting to hear him give Debussy a shot though. Just hope he doesn't try that in Carnegie Hall though, he'd get laughed off the stage, lol...

Prog rock and classical are my favorites. But a prog rocker playing classical, can it get any better? Thanks Rick.
He reads his music with his eyes closed. Brilliant!
Rick is just a musical genius. Whether he plays classical or rock you can just sit back and relax and just admire!
I repeat myself... I know I'm late, very late but mr. Wakeman I would like to say everybody that this is a precious and powerful piece of music.
Excellent -Long Live the King -Rick Wakeman
My favourite Classical Piece of Music.
Especially played by Rick.
Stunningly Beautiful
🎶❤️🎶
Spot on rick! Enjoyed the pace and heartfelt play in this music video...
Sublimely beautiful piece and you are an excellent pianist so why not play the whole thing Rick?
Thank you for sharing this performance of the Debussy classic. Many years ago I had the fortune of seeing Virgil Fox live, and he described his interpretation of this work as "not what two lovers were doing in the moonlight, but what they were 'thinking' about doing in the moonlight". It was a pleasure to hear you play this!
I also saw Virgil Fox. Its unusual to hear his name today. Very cool 😉
I am flattered to hear that you enjoyed my interpretation. It is interesting to hear that Virgil Fox had that rolling through his head while performing the piece. I recorded an electronica version of Clair de Lune several years ago and then made a video with my interpretation of the Paul Verlaine poem entitled 'Clair de Lune' that inspired Debussy to change the title of said piece to its current tile - 'Clair de Lune.' - studio.ua-cam.com/users/videoFSO6RGBwdZw/edit
Love it such a talented pianist seen him live and he is simply amazing on the keyboards.
I love classical music and he is so versatile.
I can't wait to watch all the videos of the documentary... mind blowing!!! many, many thanks Mr. Wakeman!!!
What documentary ?
Played this as entrance music at my mums funeral beautiful
This is beautiful!

A Wakeman interprtation to be sure. I am glad I know the original but this is fun to listen to. Thanks
*Rick Wakeman and Jon Lord two gods of piano !*

Wanna see someone give Rick a run for his money? Jon Vangelis...he is a master, as is Wakeman. Would love to hear dueling pianos from them 😉

a god Ron
For those saying it is too fast: Loop up on youtube debussy's versions of this piece, he plays exactly in this tempo. Today's interpretation that is usually really slow and lullabyish.
but no the 2 end movement Rick
rck with second please live !
I like Rick but sorry sir , I take the "lullabyish" version.
What are you talking about? Wakeman doesn’t play this “exactly” in ANY tempo. He’s obviously wallowing in rubato.
Sooo Beautiful! It touches my soul...Thank you.
I love this song ...
All great pianists have to be accomplished in hitting bum notes and not letting it put them off 🎹🎹
All non-improvising performing musicians of any sort have to let wrong just go in concert. (Improvising musicians have the option of turning a wrong note into a right note by working it into the fabric.) If you’re recording or filming, however, you have the option of either editing or simply starting over. Wakeman plays one flagrantly wrong note. I’m not sure why he left it. Is he trying to sound more spontaneous? Is he pressed for time? Did he simply forget?
We love Rick's playing and this is lovely. Nothing can ever compare to Walter Gieseking's rendition, but this is definitely lovely and excellent.
Beautiful.
Bravissimo, as ever⚘⚘⚘
BRAVOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!
@Rick Wakeman I thankyou too you, my big inspiration!
What a marvelous interpretation without a doubt the greatest teacher Wakeman.

@Rick Wakeman Thanks for taking time to answer this humble fan! If it was only upon me I would hang around and drink beer with you! Keep playing!
@Rick Wakeman Oh I live in Rio de Janeiro. I have not set foot in UK since 2014 I believe... and as the economy goes I don't see being able to take vacations there any time soon. But.. My company owns a company in Manchester, maybe...maybe... I get a business trip someday...
To all the naysayers in comments, it's called artistic license, I repeat, ARTISTIC LICENSE. The way you'll talk, I figured you would have heard of it, I figured wrong.
Das ist doch nicht normal wie geht das 200% Respekt
Rick Wakeman certainly has license to be artistic!
Es lo mejor que existe en la ejecución del piano. Ya es una leyenda.
It could be a “Yes” song.
He didn't play the middle of this piece, the most difficult part.
I'm sure he'd have no trouble playing it, but yeah I don't how I feel about this
And he hit a bum note at 1:49 !! But he did it oh so beautifully lol!
Don't you like, master, to play this ...in the afternoon...drinking a wine ...seeing the sunset ?...
Quanta gente amarga de mal com a vida...credo. A musica 'e linda, o pianista 'e rick...curta o som maravilhoso. kkkkk

Amazing to read how many Marta Argerich or Mauricio Pollini are here commenting... Most times envy and mediocrity go hand in hand...

Hello from Lisbon Portugal!
Greeting from Seoul!
I love Rick's work as a classically trained Prog rock keyboardist; not so much as a concert pianist. His (re) arrangements to famous Classical piano works, in a pseudo-Classical style are definitely not my cup of tea. Very much prefer his Cans and Brahms.
Rick is one of my favorite musicians. I have been a fan of his for twenty five years. Nonetheless, being honest and fair, I must admit that he is light years from having the technique and the repertoire of a concert pianist. Has he ever recorded major classical works? No, he has not. He will not.
Rick himself has stated that he longed to be a concert pianist. He enrolled at the Royal College of Music with that idea in his head, but he gave up due to the difficulty of the process. Gradually, he began to focus on progressive rock and composing, and the rest is history... A fantastic keyboardist and a prolific rock composer he is, but as far as his pianism is concerned, he is an underachiever. And the same goes for many progressive rock keyboardists whom I admire: Lord, Rudess, Emerson, Banks, Wright, etc...Great and innovative keyboardists, but mediocre pianists. They are mediocre pianists beside classical concert masters, or jazz-classical genius pianists such as Keith Jarrett and Friedrich Gulda.
Are there any progressive keyboardists with considerable concert piano skills? Yes there are: Patrick Moraz, Eddie Jobson, and Mark Robertson come to my mind.
Bet YOU cannot even play chopsticks on the piano. Now I am going to the record shop to buy YOUR classical album that YOU have recorded .
Valid criticism, my friend. I love Rick's playing too, but in this rendition of Clair, there is no room to breathe, and a distinct lack of dynamics. Changing the form of the piece also doesn't add any beauty, imo.
Yes but he is not alone in that tier of mediocre, 2nd-tier pianists; Rubinstein, Richter, Horowitz, John, Joel and Wang share that position behind Dickenson and Wrangell.
Ah the evil within
I don't mind the embellishments, but the song really shouldn't be played with that rushed feeling. I can kind of see what he was going for, like more of a flowing vibe, but it only comes through in certain parts. But, Rick is obviously a great musician and it's his interpretation, so...just my two cents. It's better than what I can do. ;)
Povero Debussy...
This must be a promotional version just for the clip. It seems rushed, very abbreviated and even has a clunker note at 1:50. It's a beautiful song and I know Rick can do it well. This just isn't that.
The clunker note is okay. He played it through. So what. One note out 50,000?
"clunker note", "rushed", "abbreviated", don't be a ponce Frank!
Timothy Rogers Not familiar with that word, but it must be bad if I shouldn't be one. Are you disagreeing with me or just wanting only compliments for the performance? All those points I made are objectively true. I've been a fan of Rick since 1972, but that shouldn't mean I can't suggest something he does is less than perfect. I am interested to hear the CD version and see how it differs from this.
Frank McBride You do realise that what he is playing is 100% his own interpretation of Clair de Lune and not meant to resemble a classical performance in any way?
I am a great fun of Rick but it was not a precise performance and there's no problem with that if it was live.
I wonder why didn't he record another take! Come on, Rick Wakeman is not an amateur!
DAVENPORT IOWA DAD JOKE of the day(for all the BOOMER TEACHERS STUDENT'S,still alive in 2024)
[Q] do TREES defecate in the forest?
[A] of course they do,where else, do you think #2 pencils, come from?
Viajem ao centro da tetta
The composer is Debussy, not Wakeman
Lang Lang is only a mere amateur compared to Rick 👍👍👍👍👍
This symphony is meant to be performed slowly, once it's boosted like that it just loses its sensations.
Oh, that was less than I expected. The floating sense of the rhythm isn’t captured (I don’t just mean it is played faster than usual) and I was very surprised that the “difficult bit” where the lilting melody floats over the rippling accompaniment is omitted. I leave with a sense of unease and disappointment. I don’t think the 14 yr old Rick Wakeman would have approved of this. Sad to leave a negative comment. Btw “Awaken” is wonderful spiritually uplifting stuff! To end on a positive :)
No thank You! Awaken, Turn of the Century, Close to the Edge, And You and I, Onward.... List goes on.....accompanied my teenage and University years and still often bring a lump to my throat and a tear. Thank YOU.
@Rick Wakeman thank you for your reply. I am in Fareham, between Portsmouth and Southampton. Practising to put some pieces on Facebook!

Only great musicians and composers have the right to play others masterpiece on their own point of view.
Everyone has that right, but not everyone can pull it off. :-)
AH DEBUSSY...
Comfortable shoes
Sorry folks, I'm a huge fan of Mr Wakeman and also loved his books, but this should have been titled as an improvisation on Clair de Lune. As one of the commentators says, he just plays parts of it, adds trills and so on and misses the best bit! As an improvisation, that would be a matter of taste but as a performance of this great piece of music it's a kind of travesty! Sorry Rick, and still a fan!
... "It seems you finally had to choose. I guess there was no other way ... "
Ballerina when you dance there's music....
HEY RICK Wakeman CALL sTEVE hAVKETT ,A GENIUS a;bum

I hate classical but this is just amazing
He changed a song that isn’t supposed to be changed
says who ...you
Slow plz
@Rick Wakeman no problems love your music
The opening should be contemplative. Not rushed like that. This is not doing the most beautiful piece of music justice/ It's almost like A.I. Sorry Rick- I really like you!
The guy is a great keyboard artist, but he’s playing this too fast, turning it Into a vanity piece, sadly. I remember when he was the keyboard artist for yes.
Rick, por favor, quítate la partitura... / Rick, please, remove the score...
Too fast!
Debussy didn't deserve this !
y qué se merecía? Tocala vos, así aprendemos.
Too quick! Loses all the feeling
killing Debussy....
Horrible. Far too fast, half of it's missing, silly little frills - shows no musicality or feeling for the piece whatsoever.
@@slapol grow up
lavate el orto =)
Sexy kitty, why? Do not throw stones into the crystal clear stream.✌
I really don't rate him. I love this piece of music and he just destroyed it (in a bad way).
Great liberties are taken: This is truncated, Romanticized, and otherwise altered (the thoroughly unidiomatic rococo ornamental interpolations, for example). As Arthur Freed used to say, good is original enough-as least when performing someone else’s works, I might qualify. I’m sorry, I can’t approve of this. I wanted to coming in, but I can’t.
It bothers me, by the way, when people call this piece “pretty”. I call it “profound”. It’s not decorative; it’s telling you that the world is radically different from how you thought.
Bad arrangement...
I love u ♥️
