- Why did we redo this video? We realised we could explain some things better and we had feedback about audio quality. We are hoping that extra info helps you with your understanding.
Colour harmonies are usually treated in two ways, wait whaT? or I hate them. However, it doesn't have to be that way we breakdown what colour harmonies and how to use them, with simple language and visuals so anyone can understand.
We hope this video was worth your time because, we put a lot of work into these videos, like too much time... so we hope you like them.

Your colour theory advice has absolutely upped my painting ridiculously. I think the comment you made about not wanting things to look like a clown is the reminder I need every time. Thanks.
You are so welcome! We are super happy that this helped people it made us feel so proud that we were actually helping people. I hope that this gets as popular as the last one so we can replace it in the understanding colour series! We strive to live up your and others expectations! - Cal
I laughed at "not wanting things to look like a clown is the reminder I need every time" Well I am glad we are helping you ~Sunny
Watching this video gave me feeling that Neo had after all of the martial arts were downloaded to his brain.

Liked, shared and bookmarked. This was a great!
Awesome thank you! That is a massive help! - Cal
Makes sense why the raven guard call them “shade lords”
HA! - Cal
I had missed the part about the tropical fish on my first viewing. One of the hurdles of Tyranid color schemes for me is that it seems difficult to achieve a good color harmony while also appearing natural (the exceptions being monochromatic and analogous.)
But I had completely forgotten about tropical fish! So wildly contrasting color harmonies can exist naturally! I just needed to find better reference animals!
Well hopefully that will be helpful 😊 show off your new nids on the group 😁 - Cal
I'm really glad we brought up that point then, hearing you say that makes me think that we are hitting points people don't normally consider, which is great! ~Sunny
Now I realize that the army mainly comprised of shades... I would have to look into browns and yellows (maybe blues) to get an earthy ash and charred bone look for my army
Glad to have helped - Cal
What did i stumble into? That energy is so damn cool! Live the video!
Thank you very much - Cal
Another great video guys!
Glad you enjoyed it! You keep rocking too man! - Cal
Makes learning fun awesome video
Thank you 🤗We are glad to hear it is still fun! - Cal
Mate , this apothecary is looking great. Around 2-3 years ago I attempted to paint a white scar , despite my best efforts however the white continued to look chalky and terrible, for an ‘amateur’ you do seem to possess a true natural skill and supremacy with a brush .
Best of luck to you and Bruce

@@WhatareyouPaintingnow my apologies
It's all good I just didn't understand ha ha - Cal
Dont know how you got this one even shorter cause the original was so full of info. But you did get it done without cuting Things out
Also the time stamps will be crucial
Pls keep up the good work
We will!!! And it was hard work to get this shorter but we wanted to jam as much as we could in because we want to respect peoples time and so many people don't! - Cal
Thanks for revamping an already amazing video! You guys are top notch when it comes to color theory!
Yeah we had some feedback about our audio and thought this video is too important to not redo if people from art school are telling us it helped them then hopefully it will help more people this time around! - Cal
Thank you for this video, some of your other videos are not as geared towards me, but this one especially I have no actual art background and no creative interest in this outside of painting for minis so I really appreciate you guys doing this video. It helps me especially
That's totally cool not everything is for everyone but this video actually took a lot of work so we can't do videos like this as often. Bit we want to do more of them
And we are super glad it has been useful for you - Cal
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow well I really appreciate it because I have not seen anyone else break it down in such a way. At least not on any miniatures channel. Thank you
Leaving a comment because this is a good video and deserves to be seen.
Thanks - Cal
Guys great video. I’ve seen this topic covered by a lot of channels but you managed to give it a simplification that other channels seem to miss. Great video as an intro to colour theory.
One piece of feedback - the thing where you move between topics or headings and you say the topic together - please stop doing this :P
Might just be me but it grates on me.
Otherwise love your guys dynamic and your videos keep getting better so keep up the great work
Thank you for the compliments, we are glad it helped a lot. On the dual voice thing we are trying to be transparent, we are going to keep doing it but you are not alone, in the complaint but some people like it. Advice we given if people are give to a strong emotional reaction both ways about something keep it in.
Thank you again for the compliment we work hard to try and make videos like this work, but they aren't easy and we will have the more easy going content inbetween like the design vs lore.
Is there anything in particular you think we could help with? - Cal
I have been trying to paint a good compmementary color scheme but could not underdtand why i failed. I watxhed your previus video a couple of time to finaly understand that i was using the wrong saturations on my minis. Thus video confir it thank
We are super glad that we have actually been helping people learn how to understand colour harmonies, it means a lot that we are actually making stuff that helps people and doesn't just entertain - Cal
I'm really glad that small detail is what helped people properly understand how to pair colours properly! Really happy to see we are helping people learn ~Sunny
So happy you guys got recommended by Poor Hammer. I would not have found your channel without them and this is by far the most helpful content of this variety! Really nice work!
Our pleasure! I hope the audio is okay now - Cal
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow Yeah I thought your audio quality was good! I haven’t listened to older videos yet though so I can’t compare. There was a little bit of a “tinny” sound with the recording but it was negligible. Probably just the room acoustics or something. Nothing that would deter me from watching more. Again, love this work you’re doing!
@@exmalobonum1 We are basically in a blanket fort of a room unless we get a proper sound engineer to help us with things I don't think will be able to improve too much from here... but we are always trying improve - Cal
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow oh good to know, I’ve been giving thought to starting a channel (not 40k related) and have been trying to research all these things. Anyway, keep up the good work!
@@exmalobonum1 For UA-cam here is my advice
1. Good audio is the biggest thing
2. Have the right time slot
3. Don't reply to some people, and despite the fact its against my values, sometimes you need to ban people, they add nothing harm your channel and only want to see you fail
4. Have your own style, this is more our thing but don't waste peoples time
5. Get into good habits like crediting people
Wow. A lot of good info with amazing presentation. Very nice.
Thank you kindly! We put a lot of effort in - Cal
Out of this world amazing👍👍👍
Thank you very much for the kind words - Cal
More informative with a shorter video we are truly blessed to live in such times. I love that Sunny snd Cal cover a topic for the length which is appropriate not like some other youtubers which strech a 3 minute video idea into 15 minutes. Thanks for valuing our time.
We strive to value peoples time because we hate it when people disrespect our time. Time is the currency of life and we aim to spend it well, if you are going to spend it on us we should make it worth every penny - Cal
You took a great video, and made it perfect
Thank you very much! - Cal
That's a truly high praise thank you very much! ~sunny
Ok I gotta admit this is a great beginners guide for understanding this stuff. I needed this video thank you
I am glad it helped you - Cal
it is crucial to not remove the coconut crab carnifex pic. thank you for this content, it could be interesting to have some tutorial of painting minis applying all the theory, but with original paint scheme. apologies for the awful english
Your English is fine ☺️ we kept most of the examples as they helped people understand and coconut crab allowed us to talk about browns - Cal
I feel like I've been doing a lot of this on accident or simply by instinct by just "feeling out" which colors look good together or copying other color schemes.
Doing it intentionally will expand my toolkit I think.
I hope this helps making that feeling solidify into understand - Cal
The benefit of existing in a world full of art and colour is that you can pick up things by just existing
Wowo that senget caught me by suprise 😂. Very informative video

You're so clever, defining an often intuitive but often under appreciated tool, in our choice of paint.
I am glad you found it helpful, if you know anyone who could benefit from this please share it with them - Cal
Hello! I love this video so much and it has helped my understanding of color theory both in mini painting as well as my other artwork, but i have a question.
I've been painting my first army for a while now. It's necrons. The color scheme I've finally fallen in love with is White Black and Orange. The main color being white and orange being the color on all the glowy bits, with black or dark gray on the joints/inner frames. I've struggled with understanding how I should balance the colors there because I don't really know how to use white in this context. If i shaded the white with blue, would that make the white read as blue in this case? I ask because in this case white is the dominant color.
I would say the way to balance it is with the order of colours. So the best way to probably do things is take a picture of your Necron duder guys and then turn it black and white. Treat the orange as a shade of grey and see how it balances things out (this is what is meant by the order of colours). So instead of look at it through a colour lens look at it through a black and white lens and hopefully that will help. This should also help with using other colours to balance things look at them in black and white - Cal
This needs to be an essential watch to new beginners
Thank you very much if it get's shared enough it will be, if you share it that will help it become that - Cal
Yeah, this is the color theory 102 class that I never knew I needed. Saved to important painting videos playlist!
Great to hear! But we hope it will be 101 revised after class feedback ☺️ - Cal
Probably the best video I’ve watched for understanding color schemes for painting
Thank you very much glad to help - Cal
Very very good redeux. Fast paced and organized
Thank you kindly! We worked hard to make the organization and pacing still fun but its a hard balance - Cal
I’m just going to leave it at, paint what I think looks cool. Necrons 60% steel, 15% maroon, 15% neon green, 5% white, 10% bronze, and I’ve got 105% color so it’s extra awesome. And that doesn’t even include highlights or edging!
Okay I have a model that's an ogre sitting in a grass field. It's definitely primarily green. I was thinking to use a split complimentary scheme with purple and red, but a lot of the model is leather so necessarily brown. Brown as you explained is compound and not on the wheel. So what would you recommend here, keep the split complimentary and just ignore that it's got a lot of brown too? Or I was thinking to desaturate the brown, or maybe tint in red?
So there is two ways to treat brown as a neutral like a shade or as its own colour. I recommend to treat it as a neutral unless you are using it as it's own colour. Hope that helps - Cal

Rock'n!

Great one thanks
You're welcome! 🤗 - Cal
I’ve seen so many of your videos and I love them and find them fascinating and packed full of information with zero fluff, but at the risk of sounding like an idiot, I still can’t figure out how to use the information to come up with my own schemes.😢
So we have a video on practical application ua-cam.com/video/0qipCbRmTO4/v-deo.html
Found here which is probably your best bet but... you're not the only one who has asked such a think so perhaps we will have to go into it a bit in a new video at some point in time...
we have a lot on, but we will have to think about doing it, if the question keeps coming up because our goal is to help people - Cal
@@WhatareyouPaintingnow your channel is absolutely fantastic. It always amazes me how even the longest videos you put up have zero fluff. I love learning from you all. Believe me, I try, maybe I just suck at it, but every color scheme I come up with doesn’t seem to look good. I usually end up copying other peoples color schemes. Hopefully your new video could shed some light on what I’m doing wrong. I look forward to the video. Thank you
Thank you! I'm entering a painting contest tomorrow, and this was a fantastic review fto help me figure out my color scheme!
Good luck! We hope we helped you tell us how you went - Cal
Using only black, white, beige and orange you can blend your way to 99.99% of all mammals.
If you exclude scales and feathers that rule extends to all vertebrae.
WOW! THis is a GREAT video!!!!
Glad you think so! - Cal
Fantastic video and great for a colour theory begginer like me! I'm wondering, since silver/steel/gunmetal all just read as shades of grey, how would you go about making an impactful, non-monochromatic scheme for a majority "grey" model/army? Grey Knights, for instance.
I am very glad you found it useful. So when it comes to an army primarily made of shades remember the order of colours like Sunny said, and the second thing is depending on how it is done you may want to think about visual breakers like we talked about. Sometimes the 'official' colour scheme is not the best. I hope those tid bits helped - Cal
Thanks for revamping this one, the orginial never found its way to me. Beautifully explained. Genestealer and flamer examples really tied their respective harmony explanations together with a nice bow for me.
You're very welcome! We are so glad that this is helping people again! If you know anyone who it would be helpful to please share it with them. We are really trying to push this one because we put a TON of effort into it - Cal
okay, wow. Thank you. It's funny that I discovered the Synthwave color scheme I'm currently working on in my Tyranids more or less at 07:24 - with some variation of course. Gave me lots to think about and process. Thanks!
We are very glad to be of service - Cal
Woo Coconids
Woo one million dots! (Actually literal if you're going to paint a whole army of them) - Cal
Good video !
But i don't understand the part with the flammer of tzeentch. If on the Tree thing the majority is Orange minority is green, wouldn't it be Blue majority, Purple minority and orange and yellow as accent ? I feel like the triangles are not in the good shape to represent the actual colors on the model.. Maybe i'm wrong but this part is hella confusing to me.
Alex I am not going to lie... It was very confusing to me to, enough that I don't want to type it out incase I get something wrong 😕 I still have trouble with it we are considering doing another section on this particular part. But to be honest I know this sounds bad but just watch it at a slower speed. That is my best bit of advice I can give from someone who still have trouble with it myself - Cal
