I hope you find the enveloping method useful. Just remember... if it seems a little methodical and mechanical, that's because any skill when it's first being learned is a bit stop-start and each step has to be very conscious (a bit like learning to drive). With a bit of practice, it becomes much more fluid and you have to make many of the construction marks I show in this video. BUT, you will still be observing the exact same things! The enveloping method just helps you to see those a little easier at first.
Any questions, please add them below and I'll do my best to answer asap. Phil
That is a really great drawing and you're an incredible teacher. Thank you. All the best, take care.
How can we see photo to draw from that? Great tutorial…thanks!p
Excellent video! I’ve done ‘drawing’ for a lot of years but never have I learned about ‘enveloping’ ... I learned so much from this one video ... thank you
Your instruction couldn't be better and I learned a lot. It's so unusual to have your art talent and ability to teach, too! Thanks for sharing.
I actually watched you for 52 minuets!
that was great video and great lesson, Thanks
Can't believe I'm drawing again! Thank you!
The shading demonstration section of this lesson was excellent. Thank you.

I like all your videos I have seen. Its so informative. Besically and mostly tutorials are full with costly drwaing sets not the teaching. I have learned so many thing specially outline clasess and volume clasess I saw
This is awesome😍 very descriptive and methodically put together. Loved it.
Hi
l love sketching and i learned a lot from your channel.
So keep up the great work man!
Thanks Nikhilesh
Brilliant! This novice may give it a try. BTW, I do agree with those who said the music was distracting. Thank goodness it didn't last long.
I've heard this same method referred to as "boxing in". Good video.
Thank you so much Phil for sharing this beautifully explained video 🙏🏻
I learn a lot from your videos. you are a great teacher! Thanks

Another great lesson, thank you so much!
Phil, thanks so much for such a great tutorial. I learned a lot from the video. Interesting that you used the Black pencils for all the shading. Good way to eliminate the shine from a graphite drawing.
Nice style !!!!
Amazing sketch..

Excellent!
I hope to see a way to draw charles bargue from easy to hard level.
There are some good videos on UA-cam for drawing Bargue drawings using the enveloping method. Actually that's where I first heard the term.
Could you still draw things like this with a mechanical pencil
Thanks
awesome
But this will only work, if I draw from reference, right? If I wanted to draw a pair of highheels on a chair next to me, how could I substitute that envelope?? Could I use skewer sticks? Could that work?
Umm. Can this be used to draw heels too.?
How do I find your reference photo to download? (I watched it last night but can't recall how far through it you mentioned where to find it). Thanks
If you go to the video on the ArtTutor webpage, you will find the reference photo there to download.
Hey I'm trying this. Bit difficult though
Hello why you did not use the golden ratio for the proportions!!!!!
tookie cookie because I don’t really believe in the golden ratio
😂 go and sit in a darkened room.... 🎨💗
You are holding a pencil, why don't you use it to copy distances?
I know this is an old comment and video.... But seriously? You can't "copy distances" unless you want to be forever limited to making drawings that are exactly the same size as your reference. You can copy angles, because they don't change with increase or decreases in size but distances(ie: length of lines) do. They are relative to the size of the subject.
@@catzkeet4860 The semantics of "copy distance", you copy a scale of size. By maintaining the same scale reference you can draw what you see in ratio to all the other measuring points in your drawing.
If you want to draw a building with some trees you obviously do no draw it exactly the same size, so you take your pencil and close one eye extend your arm intront of your face and line the point of the pencil with on of the edges of the building use your thumb down the pencil to mark the length and transfer that distance to the paper, do that with multiple reference points and you get the building to scale.
The music in the shading portion of the video was very annoying and too loud. Could hardly hear what he was saying in the beginning, until the music volume was turned down some. Still distracting.
Why play the music so loud we can't hear you talk? Everything was fine until the shading part with the loud music.
Please loose the background music! Very distracting !
The music drowns out your voice and is very distracting. 😳
