I’m trying to learn to paint. Teaching myself. When I get frustrated, I always spend time with one of your videos. It’s nice to be reminded that the whole point of creativity is to let yourself be.
I am glad that you are teaching us this! I am having some trouble trying to make my green leaves look like a nice green (and trying to figure out how to add the best shadow color without having to go too bold). Because I have learned just how hard it is to make leaves look real (and I keep hearing about how green isn't the nicest color in a painting (an artist once explained about how artists will most often add other colors to the leaves, to make them look better)). I am glad that I can learn so many things from other artists on UA-cam 🙂.
You are so encouraging. I am just at the very beginning of learning to paint with watercolor, and as someone who is not naturally artistically talented I get overwhelmed. Your joy and enthusiasm are wonderful and I learn something every time I watch your videos.
As a beginner, I appreciate all you are teaching me. First, I love your manner of speaking. You keep it light and easy sounding which doesn't make me want to run away. You make it so interesting, yet not overwhelming. Thank you 🤗
💡Moment! Some time back I watched an other lady paint lemons but she never explained as to why she used the purple. Your explanation makes sooo much more sense! 🤯🦄🎨💡
It struck me, especially when you mentioned using blue for your white flowers - could purple and blue work because of the sky? Like since Earth's atmosphere gives mountains a blue cast (purple mountains majesty with poetic license) shadowed areas would have a cool tone to them?
How do I love thee? Let me count the ways I love your quirkiness. I love your looseness. I love your sense of freedom. I love your freely given encouragement. Need I go on? I could go on, but you get the point! I LOVE you!
I struggle so much with getting it right (well what's "right" in my head) but every time I watch you I'm reminded to just be freeeee. That's the entire point of watercolor. Your videos just brighten my day
I took a painting class years ago where we had to select a set of complimentary colors to go out and do landscape painting with watercolors. At the time I had no idea what they meant, until the teacher kindly explained it to me. I still have those quick sketches and remember how fun it was to just work with a couple of colors!
I’m so inspired! 💕 I love how you blow up a lot of traditional watercolor teachings. For a beginner like myself, I watch dozens of watercolor videos every week, and I always learn something new from you!
Thank you Kristy! This did blow my mind because I knew about the muddy colors but I didn't make the connection to actually using that to my advantage as a shading or muting technique! I love how you explain everything and you are a great teacher. God bless you
You are an incredible teacher!! I have tried lots of different mediums but never watercolor….. the reason (I am ashamed to say) ,,., someone told me you couldn’t make mistakes with watercolor because it was very difficult to correct!! You have given me a whole different attitude about watercolor!! I can’t wait to learn more! Thank you…
Thanks for the reminder to SLOW DOWN and to use LITTLE bits.I’m a color mixing junkie and been doing it for years but every time I do it again l learn more.
I loved this video and remember the first time I learned about applying colors, opposite each other on the color wheel, and how it brightened my results and made me happy. Thank you for reinforcing this practice. I also want to mention that after watching several of your videos, your enthusiasm and encouragement pushed me forward on an old unfinished canvas. I had only put one layer of acrylic color on it, YEARS ago. (explained later) I was playing with ANOTHER unfinished piece I had attempted on watercolor paper with gouache. First time with this medium. Awful looking greens all over the paper. (yuck) I started to take it off the board I had taped it to, getting ready to toss it in the trash. THEN, I heard a "voice" telling me that this was an opportunity. I took out some acrylic paint, that I am much more confident with and painted flowers and a vase all over that green. I had leftover paint on my palette. I hate to waste paint. So I took out that old canvas, mentioned at the beginning of this long comment, and started applying the paint with an old credit card. Then I realized that there were all kinds of marks I could make with just that card. I used up all the paint. What I have now is a background that I am now feeling inspired to finish as "My Summer Garden." I can't wait to see what happens next! Thank you, Kristi!
Yes! When I teach watercolor for beginners for the Color Theory class, I have them paint lemons!!!! 🍋 And I’ve done that same exercise mixing with Black, Orange, Brown and Purple. 🎨 Lovely Painting and Great lesson! 👏🏼
You are so upbeat and I Thankyou for all you do. My aw ha moment came in the last few weeks. I became good at mixing greens. I’ve found that by limiting my palette and mixing my colours in getting a much more cohesive look to my paintings. 💕
I saw this around the time you posted it, and I have been obsessed with painting it!! I have now made 5 prints, and my 5th is my favorite and My husband wants me to hang out over our bed, as well as make two more paintings for a series 🥰🥰🥰 I wanna show you!!! I'm just so happy with how they turned out!!! And I am so grateful for you helping people break through their fears and just DOING IT!!!
Encouraging me to do what feels fun. Like letting colors blend on the paper and not limiting myself to 10 small tubes of paint that dries out before I can finish them. Love your focus of complimentary colors. I have painted translucent yellow and orange orange slices. I like using left over colors on the brush and in the water too. Thx
Enjoying my journey of painting along with you. Your a awesome teacher. I’m going to watch and do again and again using different fruit. Thank you Kristy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️
I love this! In the last few months I’ve pretty much been using dusk pink instead of any brown for trees and stems and leaves. It may look a bit too purple to some, but I find it blends with other colors so well and it has that deep, dark color that layers well into an almost black.
I like the part where the leaf color bled into the yellow lemon and you showed how you fixed the problem. Beginners need to be assured it's ok to make a boo boo bc even teachers do it too. They don't need to throw away the work.
Keep doing what you do so we’ll. Nobody paints color and shape and originality as you . You give me hope as I continue watching you as you shows us of how you did it and NO I will never. run away from you even though you are a little bit crazy. That’s what makes for the fun I and others keep coming back.
I actually learned colour theory from my mom, she was a freelance artist and she taught me all about contrast and analogous colours when I was a kid, i used them to make great depth for my colouring contest entries by layering crayola markers and coloured pencils, won so many contests just because I knew about colour theory and shadows. Now that I've learned to draw (started at the beginning of 2021 and am now pretty good), I can use colour theory to colour my own work.
this is the best watercolors video I have ever seen and I got my mind blown about using complementary colors instead of brown and black I am so glad I found your channel!!!!
Can’t wait to try this! Coincidentally, I just got highlights on my hair last week and the stylist told me the exact same thing: add some lavender/light purple to the gold highlights to mute it, and it turned out great!
I would love to see your realism painting. I always use my leftover color on my palette. Thanks for another great tutorial. Loved the lemons and kumquats
You just made me feel a lot less fearful about color mixing! Thank you! Now, if you can just get me to start painting again instead of living vicariously while watching everyone else on UA-cam paint I will call you a miracle worker! I’m stuck! I go out and photograph all sorts of stuff and screenshot my fingers off collecting “reference photos for painting. I am full of inspiration but I can’t seem to get unstuck!
OMG the “you made mud” thing made me SO subconscious of mixing some colors- Thankyou for saying not to be afraid of mixing mud! (Sry for all the comments too 😬)
Love the shadowing with the complementary colors!!! Not too sure about the "realism". I like your easy going style and the way you let the watercolor lead you around!!!
MIND BLOWN! 🤯 Lol, you are amazing. I am a new painter and have learned so so very much from you and your style. Thank you so much for doing what you do and the personality you do it with!
I like all the ideas in this video. I may try it! I am, however, confused by "glazing" and "layering". I see process videos which include many many steps and layers and it gives me a huge crisis of confidence. I wouldn't even know where to begin. Maybe a video of a very simple subject done like that just to explain the thinking behind it? Thank you for what you do!
Oh I think this is such a good idea!! Yes the more intensive, super realistic glazing tutorials are wondrous but can feel overwhelming. I will get to work on a simplified approach! I do have a video coming next week that goes in a bit lore depth about glazing. Stay tuned!!
It is not that hard to learn how to work in layers. Glazing is actually layering with transparent colours. In order to achieve that you have to start with the lighter colours and proceed to the darker ones. If you paint a lemon for example start with a very pale yellow wash, wait for this to dry while you are painting something else on the same painting and then go back with another layer of somewhat darker colour to start build the shape of your lemon.
It doesn’t take an aha moment to like your video. Boop. I liked it the moment I saw your adorable face on the table and you began talking to yourself. Lol. 🥰
Hi Kristi, I have recently learned about glazing too. I really love the effect it can offer. I used it in some misty hills to give a soft foggy effect. I love your dry brush effect at the end. Sometime, maybe you could address negative painting, in your own way, of course. Love ya girl!
You're such a rule breaker that's why you're videos are awsome that was a great tip . I was always told that opposite colors will make mud and ruin your painting
Lol! "Polka dot disease". I love it! I am never unsubscribing! Love your zesty personality and juicy painting! I will give these cheerful lemons a go! Your painting is exquisite! Thank you, Kristy! 🥰🎨🖌🍋
I love your style, compositions and creative color use which is so appealing and interesting, but it would be fun to see the Realistic Kristy style, since you asked 😊
Best ever class! I’m appreciating you freedom and your telling me it’s OK to do whatever! Loved the lemon video, I’m interested in some of your books, Keep up teaching in your style, I’m not a specific direction follower! Thanks for you! Karen Dirmish
Kristy, what a lovely video and so instructive and encouraging. I teach painting classes and spcifically a class called The Magical Color Wheel. I want the participants to be introduced to the principles of color theory but I also want them to feel free too explore color and find out what happens when you mix colors (yellow and purple) as opposed to just grabbing a ready made brown, let's say. This video did a wonderful job of encouraging that. The additions of colors (reds and pinks) to the edges of leaves really added dimension and interest to an already delightful painting. I think I am hooked - will be watching more/all of your videos.
I like your approach. I prefer watching how You paint and talk about loose style - I'm not very interested in realism. I am always surprised when you add something not obvious (ex. blue leaves!) - it ALWAYS look sooooooo good and I am amazed!
The beginning of this video is so funny and so relatable!! 🤣🤣 Yes, sometimes learning about new techniques can be daunting and make me want to take a nap. But then again, I love naps 🤭 Thank you for your enthusiasm and encouragement, I recently found your channel and it quickly became a favorite! 💜
Love the loose look! I am too impatient to stop and wait for the paint to dry. Of course, in some compositions, I MAKE myself do something else. However, I love "messy!"
Hi, I've watched a few of your videos lately, and find them interesting. I am particularly interested in the use of complimentary colours and such to create more interesting shadows than greys, browns or blacks straight out of the paint box. I would LOVE to see a more realistic bunch of lemons. I once wanted to paint water over stones in blue/green shallows but although the word "glazes" was in my mind I had no idea how to create or use them, or even much idea of what they were. And every time I tried to seek out lessons or even just tips on Glazes, I continually got told I needed to start at the beginning, and things like "it takes years". I gave up with such ideas and moved into 3D modelling... I am now ancient, and don't have enough life left to spend a lifetime learning one thing. So your ideas and insights are fascinatingly intriguing! Thank you so much for posting your videos. I enjoy them tremendously!
It’s takes years is sooo discouraging. It doesn’t take years to find joy in exploring something new! It just takes one step! You are in the right place! Glazing, Kristy style coming soon!!
Hi I'm Cheryl, a tentative watercolorist who is frequently guilty of staring with terrified eyes at a blank sheet of paper. I experience pure joy when I watch your tutorials. You are absolutely fabulous. Please don't change, you are a delight. I find your bold loose presentation liberating although I have yet to summon the courage to attempt one. I would love to see you paint more realistically; just as I would love to enjoy your landscapes and abstract pieces. I just know you have so much to teach me and I want it all! Keep on being you cuz I think you're just the best. Thanx
I love your vibe and your laugh is contagious. I would love to see Realism Kristy but just because I am curious since your style is just so you and fantastic.
Lovely! I've been painting years, but always struggle with wet in at for flowers, but I will try now. I've wanted to get more loose, you're helping, Thankyou.
Thank You! I too had my AHA moment with lemons; because of you! Not perfect; my total imagination after watching your video ....but such an amazing experience 💖

@@KristyRice Brilliant! I'll look forward to that. Thank you.
Thanx
Wow thank you so very much!
Yes to realism. Thanks for every thing you do!
You’re welcome!!
I love your vibe and your laugh is contagious. I would love to see Realism Kristy but just because I am curious since your style is just so you and fantastic.
I’m on it!! Thanks for watching!!
Love this video, how you explained it made sense.
Oh yay!!
I’d like to see when you add water. I need to learn when to dab. I worry about ‘spoiling’ the colours.
Lovely! I've been painting years, but always struggle with wet in at for flowers, but I will try now. I've wanted to get more loose, you're helping, Thankyou.
Wonderful!
Love this! Will try it out! Thanks, keep doing what you’re doing 😎
You are too sweet! Cheers :)
Glazing n layering would be good to see because I worry about the paper breaking down with additional working
I’m soo in this!! I got you!!
I liked all ideas in the video, inspired.
Kristy, you are amazing😊❤️❤️
Thank you!
I think you cracked the code on color theory! Love, love, love the muted colors you were able to create! 🤔
Awesome! Thank you!
Love lemons.. for sure...
Soooo fun!!
I tryed this today and I love it
Hmmmm yes it does!
Lol “if life gives you lemons- bust out the watercolors”
Yuuup!!
Love you technique. I’d also like to see a realistic lemon or peach painting.
Oooh a peach!!! On it!!
Yes to anything you want to paint
🤣🤣😘
Love your videos! I am painting my first painting now, and its a pretty rough looking landscape. You give me hope that i can do this. Thanks!
We’re hoping for late this coming week!
Rough is good, it’s a beginning!
You are so fun! I love how you explain things. Please, no realism, stick to what you are already doing(since you asked) 😊🌸🎨
I did ask!!! Thank you!! 💃🏻😘😘
Thank You! I too had my AHA moment with lemons; because of you! Not perfect; my total imagination after watching your video ....but such an amazing experience 💖
