One of the best cycling video's I've seen. Paul's calm voice to guide you up a mountain, knowing every crack, every gradient by heart it seems. And then pushing you just that bit further as you would've been able to without him. To me he sounds like one of the best cycling coaches/DS, and I think a lot of cycling teams would be better having him around. And Phil, great performance on that climb, and it sure looks like the power is coming back again nicely. You and Paul make a great team together, and I really enjoy these video's making me want to ride the climb myself. Great narrating, editing and filming (also from Paul on the bike doing a casual 300w 😉).
Thanks ever so much Marco 🙏 that’s massively kind of you to say so. And I agree with everything you say of Paul. He would be the perfect DS or premium coach. Makes a massive difference to have his advise and encouragement on the climb 💯. And much appreciated on your observation of my power - this is the first time since the accident that I’ve produced that power to weight for so long on the climb . Starting to feel a little more like my old self - but still a way to go. Hope all is getting better on the health front for you, Sir !
Cheers Neil’s 🙏 - that’s really lovely of you to say so! And it’s also comforting to cycle the climb with someone in front providing advice, encouragement and a little bit of stick also !!
What a great video! Burritos, bridges, a 'chain tight', excellent commentary and a pacing master class from Piglet 👌 Boy does he know how to help people up a climb.
Thanks ever so much Katie 🙏. And for sure Paul is able to get the very best out of people - so so much practical and easy to implement advice 💯. Hope your lifting is progressing nicely 💪
Thanks ever so much Peat 🙏 - that’s very kind of you to say so! And was a pleasure to ride with Simon and see his wonderful bike - it’s truly a work of art and even prettier in real life 💯🤩
Super effort! True such a great coach this Paul. All he says and does to encourage you. But you yourself are amazing too. That power! Interesting video. Great edit too!
Lovely to hear from you Agnes ! And for sure - when Paul is in coaching mode, I always learn loads and ride better💯. So so calm and always solid practical advice that’s easy to implement !
Cheers Adam 🙏 - and for sure I massively recommend a trip to the Nice area. Absolutely incredible part of the world - beautiful cycling and adventure. And Madone does not disappoint 💯
I did in 2017, alone , I thought I was going to die 😂. Cars beep as they come around the switch backs , I was going to stop a few cars to ask for a lift, lol , I was to embarrass to ever ask. Took 2 1/5 hours . What a memory ❤
💯Lee - Piglet’s ability to talk calmly right up to his own threshold is on another level - and very very reassuring 👌. And there is no doubt, that this is a place to visit with a bike - you’ll see that in the next video 🤩
Fantastic video Phill. The Phill/Piglet double act is UA-cam gold, a level headed and practical mentor with a student who is determined to implement the wisdom and push themselves to the max, double motivation for the viewer there. The third of my favourite UA-camrs to do Madone this spring and I can see why, I can't get enough of watching it!
Cheers Nick 🙏- and for sure Paul is able to get the best out of most people on the bike 💯 Makes a huge difference having someone on a bike able to encourage, advise on pacing and also push a bit harder for the mental fortitude .
Thanks ever so much Roger - that’s super kind of you. I have a 30 cassette on the rear, and it helps keep the cadence when the gradient steepens. But above 10-11% even in the smallest gear I’m out the saddle or seated and grinding a lower cadence
Nice to see you back in full action after that horrific accident last year ! Did that climb last October after the Col d'Eze and found it really hard...and I've climbed some hard ones (Ventoux by all sides, Alpe d'Huez, Sabot). I was probably out of practice a bit and the rental bike wasn't great. Didn't find the roads in the area very enjoyable was tons of traffic even off season...except on the Madone fortunately.
Excellent Phil well done my friend 🤩🤩👏🏅🏅🚴🚴🚴 I’ve also started to deploy the Tony Martin during my efforts used this morning on a VO2Max session works great ❤️🔥❤️🔥🚴🏅Paul’s an excellent coach 😊
Cheers Pete 🙏. And so pleased the Tony cue is helping you. I’ve found it really helpful - and think that even though I’ve not got as much raw power, I’m a better cyclist and able to repeat efforts as a result
Thanks ever so much Richard 🙏 - it’s a great book and despite the revelations after it was published, I think it shows the mental fortitude and focus needed to prevail in top level cycling and wider life .
Thanks ever so much Jaysal 🙏! And agreed I too find it super hard to sustain the VAM - I gradually rebuilt from 900 or on the longer climbs to 1000 - but this was unusually good for me !
That was a cracking effort Phill, I just need to lose 20kg! Glad you cut it just short of the puncture debacle. Also, I was not in control of the mandate😂
Cheers Simon 🙏 - and you, Sir are on another level of strength, and technical ability. Destroyed me on all terrain - and for sure with 5kgs less I’d have not been able to keep with you on the climbs 🥵. Big ring on the Madone straight off the aircraft 🤯. Was really good to meet you - and hope you have an amazing TT season . I’m trying a 25mile road bike TT this weekend
Lance is a true great of cycling. They all doped back then - he was just the best. I still think if they were all natty he would've won. He got many into the sport and cycling is only where it is today due to him. Great ride btw Phil and good video
Jan Ullrich would have beaten him any time if both were natty. Lance acknowledged in some interview that Ullrich had way more talent and better genes. He just wasn't as focused and often just lazy and fat through the off season.
Thanks ever so much cwil 🙏 - and I agree, he won the physical and mental battle, and despite all of the controversy I think it’s fair to place his achievements into the context of the time and competition
Maybe Lance Armstrongs KOM isn’t the best to aim for 😂😂 that was no Tony Martin face at the top, that’s your send it face! That annoying time where your in the box and your mate is talking to you all the way! Great effort that!
🤣Neil - was a little ambitious !! And for sure - the Tony Martin face well and truly deserted me in the final 10mins 🥵 - whilst Paul was still chirping a way like a budgerigar😅
I understand why it's an iconic climb, but why do you feel it is a controversial climb? Great vid & commentary.. All of Tony Martin's solo breakaways were awesome to watch!!! You always knew he left it all out there... TT's and breakways!
Cheers Dustin - and thanks ever so much🙏. I agree it should not be a controversial climb - but when I researched the Col de la Madone - I discovered that many pro cyclists love it and value the KOM, but because of the history are a little hesitant to publish their data on it. And the point I’m making in the vid is that the climb has actually also done so much good (with Lance and his cancer foundation as well as the entertainment he bought to cycling before his downfall) - and should be considered something to be proud to go up fast 💯
Thanks ever so much Jasper 🙏. I don’t have a coach - and try to keep things simple for my own training, plus work in around limited time to train (usually 5-7hours per week including gym). Hence its big blocks of power - 15-90mins, never less than my lactate threshold 1 (ie inflexion point between z2 and z3). Adding in VO2 Max to one session per week - especially when short on time to train (hence I love the Tempo / LT1 with VO2 max surges). Plus Zwift race. Usually 2 full rest days. I’m adding in a bit more volume now (never below LT1) as I approach my main events of the year
as you probs know trek’s premium bike is named after this armstrong training climb. the recent iterations are awful (engineering & weight). recently armstrong said he liked to prepare on madone on the tt bike at low cadence 60-70 rpm. sounds rather uncomfortable.
Cheers Found Found Found, I was aware of the bike history - but not his loving of the low cadence work on the col! I guess it built muscular strength / endurance that made spinning a high cadence feel much easier at similar power .
Hi Garfield - and for sure I’ll never go even 5W/kg uphill for time Sir ! I fully agree the EPO was a big factor for Lance it turns out - but I hope the video also shows his other very positive contributions to this world 👍
So Tony gets up the hill 3 minutes faster than a super-doped Lance? Ok then. I wouldn’t be sure thatTony’s bike was really lighter than Lance’s given that pre-disc brakes pretty much everyone was down at 6.8kg for years. Great ride though. Well done.
Hi Christer - The point I make is that Lance Armstrong is intrinsically linked to this climb, and not withstanding his well trailed mistakes in life (which are ancient history) his cycling legacy provides to this day a better life and hope for many thousands of cancer sufferers - and this is a legacy few people on this world will contribute . Personally I think that in the context of the times - Lance took the majority of the blame for a problem that was endemic in cycling - and it is reasonable to consider his other contributions to this world .
I certainly agree that his accomplishments on the bike need to be considered in the context of the time and competition, Karl . And also a legacy off the bike that endures to this day.
I certainly don’t use any performance enhancing drugs - I am after all nearly 50 and have no financial incentive to damage my health!! The point I make is that Lance Armstrong is intrinsically linked to this climb, and not withstanding his well trailed mistakes in life (which are ancient history) his cycling legacy provides to this day a better life and hope for many thousands of cancer sufferers - and this is a legacy few people on this world will contribute . Thank you dear Phil. Congratulations mate. Ride on...
Thanks ever so much from Jayne and I, Atakan🙏. How are you ? And how’s your training going in beautiful Turkey ?
Chapeau Phill. Chapeau.
Cheers Chris 🙏 - much appreciated

There is something quite relaxing about sitting down and watching someone ride up a climb with added commentary
Cheers Neil’s 🙏 - that’s really lovely of you to say so! And it’s also comforting to cycle the climb with someone in front providing advice, encouragement and a little bit of stick also !!

Cheers David 🙏 - looking forward to meeting up in the Peaks soon 💯
Yes, I’m a big fan of lance, amazing achievements, and don’t forget it was level playing field
A pat on the back to you Phil..impressive !
Also - thanks for showing us Simon's bike. I know I'm not the only one who likes those bits.
Thanks ever so much Peat 🙏 - that’s very kind of you to say so! And was a pleasure to ride with Simon and see his wonderful bike - it’s truly a work of art and even prettier in real life 💯🤩

Very impressive climbing and beautiful footage! Lovely stuff through and through
Thanks ever so much Wes 🙏 - hugely appreciated Sir !
Great effort Phil, would love to ride that one myself someday 👊👊👊

Loved this one guys. Piglets ASMR really settles me. Looks like a place that needs visiting ❤

Great video Phil, climbing not shabby either!!
Cheers John - my best since the accident this time last year!
Beautiful ! And well paced 👌
As ever so so kind of you, Pierre-Alain🙏. A wonderful climb in a very beautiful part of the world
I'm absolutely amazed that you can keep spinning up those monster climbs. You inspire me to keep trying to get fitter and faster. Well done, Phil.
Thanks ever so much Roger - that’s super kind of you. I have a 30 cassette on the rear, and it helps keep the cadence when the gradient steepens. But above 10-11% even in the smallest gear I’m out the saddle or seated and grinding a lower cadence
Awesome job guys

This is incredibly well paced Phil! Well done!
Thanks ever so much Gerben - it’s a sensational climb, and the negative split always serves me well 💯
Great video Phil, excellent commentary..as usual!
Thanks ever so much Stuart 🙏 that’s incredibly generous of you 👍
Beautiful ride Phil, coincidentally I'm nearly finished reading "it's not about the bike" currently, very much enjoying the read.
Thanks ever so much Richard 🙏 - it’s a great book and despite the revelations after it was published, I think it shows the mental fortitude and focus needed to prevail in top level cycling and wider life .
Great pace! I find climbing at threshold above 1000 VAM on long climbs quite hard indeed so chapeau!
Thanks ever so much Jaysal 🙏! And agreed I too find it super hard to sustain the VAM - I gradually rebuilt from 900 or on the longer climbs to 1000 - but this was unusually good for me !
Awesome video as always phil. I can only dream
Thanks ever so much Adam 🙏 - super kind of you
Cracking video again Phil! 😀

Nice one, as always.
Thanks Jonathan - hugely appreciated 🙏. Hope Scotland is looking beautiful in the early summer sunshine !

Jan Ullrich would have beaten him any time if both were natty. Lance acknowledged in some interview that Ullrich had way more talent and better genes. He just wasn't as focused and often just lazy and fat through the off season.

I’m sure a very tangled web, Ron 💯
I’ll need to read up on Jan Ullrich, Nadine - I’m sure will be a fascinating subject
Great achievement 🎉
Much appreciated Sir 🙏 - and for sure the best climb I’ve done for a long long time 👍
@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy I am female 😀
@@fastbreakm7788 my sincere apologies Fastbreak !! You are too too kind Ma’am !
@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy no worries 🙂and wish you more climbs like that🙌
Love it 147 maxi
Cheers Paul 🙏 too too generous Sir ! 147 is a beautiful thing to watch !

You wouldn’t by chance be doing the Dragon Ride next month in the Brecon Beacons, would you?
Hi Earl - no I’m not. But I’d love to do it one day. Hope you get good weather and enjoy!
Great video as always. Do you have a coach at the moment or do you program all the vo2 with surges workouts (and similar) yourself?
Thanks ever so much Jasper 🙏. I don’t have a coach - and try to keep things simple for my own training, plus work in around limited time to train (usually 5-7hours per week including gym). You will not get that Strave segment. You will need at least 2 litres pure EPO in your blood. That's the "Lance way" to do it! Yeah!
Hi Garfield - and for sure I’ll never go even 5W/kg uphill for time Sir ! I fully agree the EPO was a big factor for Lance it turns out - but I hope the video also shows his other very positive contributions to this world 👍
I really doubt Lance had a heavier bike than a modern disc brake bike.
Cheers for the reminder ! I’d completely forgotten that ‘progress’ has been backwards weight wise !! 🫣

Respect BUT I must point out, it's ESPRESSO not EXPRESSO
🤣 indeed it is ☕️! Cheers 🙏
Noice
Cheers Fraser 🙏
Why mention a cheating person is beyond me.
To get cycling clean takes one method.
Ban the whole team for 2+ years. One dopey = all team banned.
Armstrong is the goat.
Its not cheating if everyone dopes...
Does this mean you're juicing too? Honoring or comparing yourself to that POS is disturbing.....
All elite cyclists dope..
You think pog, jonas, evenapoel etc all clean?
They just beating the tests.
Grow up
I certainly don’t use any performance enhancing drugs - I am after all nearly 50 and have no financial incentive to damage my health!!
