Thank you for your wonderful classes and the way you explain important factors like the angle of the light and shade. This certainly seems a sensible way to illustrate, having both the agility of a pencil and all the functions of Photoshop as well as your most informative classes!
This is a wonderful tutorial. A little dry as you reintroduce some of the functions I already know, but I sat up as soon as you started painting and watched in awe. This is going to be really helpful for me. :) Thank you so much!!
Jess Bircham thank you very much for showing me this. Bless your beautiful soul! It was a bit hard to do since i use mouse, but it's really easy to understand and I'm getting better now XD thank you!
Great! That was me too which is why I found my own way of recreating the traditional media in a digital format. Good luck with your watercolor paintings! :-)
I just found your channel a few days ago and I love it! Your videos/tutorials are really east to understand ! The only point I am struggling with is the “paper”. I pick the one you suggested but it doesn’t look the same as yours (I see it when I adjust the levels as the graphic is completely different from yours). But I think it may be because I use Photoshop CS6 and they may have changed the patterns. Anyway, thanks A LOT!
Hi Jess. Thanks for the reply. I downloaded the prog in Google Chrome, but will not install. Thanks for your comments and advice, I will watch the Fox video and use that method. Keep up the good work your vids and tutorials are geat.
I hope you will see my comment as I realize this video is quite old now ... but still very useful to anyone wanting to retain the charm of traditional watercolour. My question is do you keep the scanned pencil drawing lines in the final print document or do you delete the scanned original pencil drawing before you send it to print? Thank You. I´ve watched one other of your vids on digital watercolour & find your procedure very helpful.
I love coming back to your tutorial and keep learning the little tricks. :) I copied my picture and made it bigger, for some reason it's really pixely. Your's looks soo smooth. Is there a way to make it bigger without making it look blurry?
If you are referring to the drawing you scanned in - make sure that when you scan it you have the scanner set to at least 300 ppi or it will be very blurry when you try to enlarge it. If it is a very small drawing (less than an inch) you may just not be able to enlarge it very big without it looking blurry. Hope that helps!
Jess thank you so much! It's detailed and I learn a lot from your tutoring ! But in my ps CC , I can't find where is the Bland fast is , where can I find it?
Did you download the Blend Fast tool? NKS5 nkurence.com/blog/2012/06/nks5-natural-media-toolkit-for-photoshop-cs5-cs6/ Once you have that it should show up under Tools. It is usually somewhere near the bottom of your tool list.
Thanks for sharing :) very cool. But I didn't install the NKS5 which I am using Photoshop CC 2018, may I know if any other method to do the blending part? many thanks
Hi, Jess! I'm very happy to find your video, such a great one. I want to learn digital painting and I already installed Photoshop CC 2017, but the NKS5 cant be installed. What Photoshop CC version do you use?
Hi Farras - I use Photoshop CC. I didn't have any trouble downloading the blending tool but others have done so you're not alone! I explain in detail in some of my other videos how you can use the smudge tool and get the same effect - so be sure to check those out! Thanks for watching :-)
Hi Jess, thank you for the tutorial and really love your amazing work!! I'm writing to ask you a quick question regarding the blending tool. I installed the NKS5, but couldn't find "blend fast" in my tool preset menu. Can you please help me figure it out?
I love your tutorial! I want to create clipart from my watercolor paintings. What is the best way to get the background transparent for PNGs? Is it to remove white with background eraser or do you have any other tips?
Hi Sandra, honestly I never work in PNG - I use jpegs, psd or AI (Illustrator files for vector art) and pdf. So that being said you could manually erase everything around the object, use the quick selection tool (next to the lasso tool) and select your background and then delete it or you could set your drawing/background layer to multiply and it should keep that layer transparent. Hope that helps! Thanks for watching :-)
You are so kind. I am an illustrator too, but I have always struggled with finding a way to make my illustrations as vivid and soft as "the real thing". In every course and every vid I have seen before it always fills and styles, I love your way of doing it. It is real art and brings love into the painting. I am so happy you shared your technique. It is straightforward and super clear. An AI tutorial would be super because I find it even harder to get my illustrations vivid and not all "dead". I have issues with vectorizations hahaha
I totally understand - I don't love Illustrator - Photoshop is my favorite. Vector art can feel flat and generic but I will do some videos in Illustrator too :-)
Thanks Arthur! The name of the blending tool is NKS5 and you can download it here: nkurence.com/blog/2012/06/nks5-natural-media-toolkit-for-photoshop-cs5-cs6/
Thanks for the video , i have a question! Why not use RGB instead of CMYK ? I always use RGB but i noticed that the colors were brighter than CMYK's colors
Great question. With RGB you can use a wide spectrum of colors - RGB is what you use for art that you would see on a screen - such as a website. CMYK is what you use for art that will be printed. Our eyes can see millions of colors and RGB is what our eyes see however, we cannot print in RGB we can only print using a much smaller color spectrum known as CMYK. Since I am a children's book Illustrator almost everything I do is later printed so I have to first set my color mode to CMYK. You can always change a CMYK piece of art to RGB. However if you try to change an RGB to a CMYK after you've finished the art the colors will be completely distorted. Hope this helps...
Some people have had issues with downloading this software - unfortunately as I didn't create it there's not much I can do. I had to download mine using Google Chrome or Firefox as it wouldn't download in Explorer. Also, be sure to check out his download instructions on his page. Hope it works for you. If not - check out my video "How to Paint a Fox using Watercolor Technique in Photoshop CC". I give you an alternative of just using the smudge tool - many of my followers now just use this and it works great too.
Hello! I was watching your tutorial on how to watercolor paint and i downloaded the blending extension and everything... after about an hour of searching read that photoshop does not support extension manager?? and everytime i try to install the extension it just says that it requires photoshop 12.0 or higher, but i'm running cc 2017? :S
Hi - some people have an issue downloading the blending tool so I made a new video where you can just use the smudge tool to blend. Check it out here: ua-cam.com/video/B8uMG121CJg/v-deo.html
first, thank you so much for your amazing tutorial second, your drawings are so cute and has very worm feeling maybe like the artist, like the artwork third, I really enjoyed dogs barking sound at 12:17 :D
Hi Jess, I can not found your blending tool form the website link, because the link is a brush tool box, could you please check the link and relink again ? thanks a lot!
This is the link: nkurence.com/blog/2012/06/nks5-natural-media-toolkit-for-photoshop-cs5-cs6/ You will see a download button near the bottom of the page. The Blend Fast tool is part of a package of tools you will download - it comes with several. For the purpose of this tutorial I only use Blend Fast. Thanks
Thank you so much. I didn't know if you'd see this, so I sent a friend request to your facebook. you can just ignore it. LOVE your video. Makes me think I could maybe, possibly, do some watercolor with other people's drawings (since I can't draw). I do digital scrapbooking and card-making. Looks like so much fun, and I'm getting a new-to-me wacom tablet in a few days, so can't wait to try it.
You're so welcome! I don't get to my UA-cam very often but I'm glad I could help! I actually created this tutorial for my coworkers who are completely new to this so I broke it down pretty simple so anyone could do it. You should give it a try - it's a lot of fun! Just don't forget if you are printing you want to start your file in CMYK mode - then it will print the colors as close to what you see on the screen as possible. Good luck!
I'm frustrated! I downloaded it, but when I go to open, it says "This extnesion can not be installed, it requires Photoshop version 12.0 or greater. Well, it is made for Photoshop CS 5, which is what I'm using. Until PS went to the cloud, I think the highest version it went to was PSCS6, so I don't know where the 12.0 is coming from. There has been no action on that site for several years. Do you think it is past getting? I don't know how to contact the creator because you have to be logged in to contact him, but there's no way I can find to become a member to log in. Ideas? TIA
I have Photoshop CC and had no problem getting it. You could maybe try the older version NKS3 nkurence.com/blog/2010/01/nks3/ - sorry I'm not more help. Sometimes there are issues with web browsers - I use a Mac and sometimes have to use Firefox or Chrome to download things.
The first time I see the watercolor effect without texture overlay. Very good art and tech, sincerely.
Thank you for your wonderful classes and the way you explain important factors like the angle of the light and shade. This certainly seems a sensible way to illustrate, having both the agility of a pencil and all the functions of Photoshop as well as your most informative classes!
Aww you are very welcome - I'm so glad you enjoy them :-) Thanks for watching!
This is a wonderful tutorial. A little dry as you reintroduce some of the functions I already know, but I sat up as soon as you started painting and watched in awe. This is going to be really helpful for me. :) Thank you so much!!
Thanks so much everyone!

It was a bit hard to do since i use mouse, but it's really easy to understand and I'm getting better now XD
thank you!
Lovely style, thank you for sharing. I'm going from traditional watercolour to digital and this really helps!!
Great! That was me too which is why I found my own way of recreating the traditional media in a digital format. Good luck with your watercolor paintings! :-)
Thanks for putting up this video and sharing this technique and explaining each bit so clearing. Amazing work and such a cute drawing.
Thanks so much :-)
wow this is so wonderful. I installed the smudge bar tool but could really find the blend fast blur, there are many other blurs though..

Yes every version of Photoshop is different and I think that's why it's looking different for you. Thanks for watching!

Hi! Thanks for watching. Yes I leave the original pencil drawing in the art - I think it adds to the texture of the piece.
@@JessBircham I agree. I think it retains some of the charm of traditional watercolor. Thank you for your reply & for sharing your beautiful work.
@@quenuk You are so welcome :-)
Thanks, Jess!! That's a wonderful tutorial!
Thank you! It was awesome, I love your drawing

Thanks for sharing :) very cool. But I didn't install the NKS5 which I am using Photoshop CC 2018, may I know if any other method to do the blending part? many thanks
Yes if you can download Kyle T Webster's watercolor brushes off Adobe he has some excellent blending brushes.

I installed the NKS5, but couldn't find "blend fast" in my tool preset menu.

Hmm should be near the end of your tool list - NKS5 comes with several different tools. Maybe make sure it actually uploaded to your tools panel?
Nice one Jess thanks for sharing

Im also looking to achieve that water color dripping effect and the dark borders
