Jamal, ALL of these men are on fire! Why can't people get this fabulous music on the radio? It's always the same old same old on every station. These men studied their instrument, can play any kind of GOOD music and we reap the benefit. These men were not out of someone's garage pretending to play music. These are the REAL music makers and the songs are OH so great! SYLVIA - FL -6-6-2018.
Very noticible was the presentation of flowers to the musicians. Very seldom does this happen in America which let its great jazz music fade away. Bravo to the wonderful audience and the sparkling performance by the world's greatest piano.
This is fantastic. I think it was after Oscar's first of several struggles with arthritis, and you would never know he was dealing with any sort of hand issues. Still at his best, always was.
I don't know how anyone can sit down to that kind of music. This is the kind of song that helps liberate the soul. 12:00 you can see it in his face he put more than his fingers into it, his body is literally pouring out for this
In spite of the difficult days in Prague during the 1960s, the audience was very fortunate to be able to see this on their TV. It speaks volumes that the audience was so appreciative of this music which must have been frowned upon by the ruling elite at this time.
I met Bobby Durham in Paris some years ago and he told how difficult it was to start a concert at this kind of tempo! I had to warm up a lot backstage he told me... But during this time Oscar was at the bar enjoying a drink... 😂
He has to have had the fastest fingers of any player ever combined with an incredible classical background places him in a speical category of performers. As a 76 year old piano hack, I appreciate his experise..
even the trombonist at 22:22 is phenomonal. They all incorporated every singular aspect of jazz and blues develepment the in this preformance. Let it be perfect. Thats it.
International Jazz Festival Praha -/ this performance in 1969 took place In Prague//legendary pianist Oscar Peterson, bassist Sam Jones, drums Bobby Durham
These boy's were on top of their game. In Rome. A long ways from the hood, right? I knew Sam Jones was a good bass player, but I didn't know he was "Oscar Peterson" Good. You've got to know what you're doin messin' around with Oscar Peterson. I'm impressed. Durham is on fire!
Oscar Peterson Good. Oscar was a God of the piano and swinging. But he ran out of ideas by the seventies.Yes.That is what I said. Heretical. I await the Jazz Inquisition`s righteous responses.
One of the great Peterson teams, formed after Ray Brown and Ed Thigpen disbanded. Their albums include "Girl Talk", "The Way I Really Play", "mellow Mood", "Travelin' On", ""Tristeza on Piano", and "Helli Herbie".
Ok... Durham might be one of my new favorite drummers. I'd never heard of him before. Not that I can remember. That boy was insane! ... and I'm going to have to add Sam Jones to my favorite bass players list now too. Dang! You'd think I would've heard more of Mr. Jones, being in Cannonball's group. wow... so rock solid.
@@Dontaking2008 Yeah, Just to connect the facts from that time - It was one year after the Soviets invaded the (former) Czechoslovakia and had remained there for 30 years. 30 years of not being able to cross the boarders etc. So Hymn To Freedom had definitely a secret message at that time...
“Mostly, he wanted to leave his music behind. He knew that he had a great legacy of his compositions and recordings and performances and that’s what he was proud of. He was always looking toward the future, but not as far as what his legacy would be, more how he could challenge himself, how he could play it better the next time, what piece he was going to write. I think that has a lot to say about his humility.” Kelly Peterson - Wife
Check out Bobby Durhams drumming on the 1969 "Hello Herbie" album with Oscar Peterson, Sam Jones and Jazz-guitar great Herbie Ellis. One number called 'Day By Day', features Durham playing the coolest Bossa Nova drum tapping and brush combination ever recorded. The drum taps that sound like rapid clicks, are layered over sweeping brushwork that fills out the rhythm, as legendary Motown bassist James Jamerson would say, "Filling it" beyond what’s possible.

The OP Trio encouraged visitors to their Jazz Festivals, from all over The World. These Jazz Lovers, sought to listen the Music, and; join the great Task, that is to fathom and proclaim,The Brotherhood and Love ;by their Music, and exemplary life, The Mystery of Godsy Mercy.
Any chance to see OP videos at this clarity is greatly appreciated, but it seems to me that the piano is a bit flat or the tape is running a little slow.
the drummer's cymbals ..he was so playing them.. that it seemed like bruce lee with matches good. he was striking them like matches... i'm surprised he had any hair left after he exploded the universe with a massive firestorm of a drum solo after trading with Oscar. name?
Oscar had to help that trombonist that's what it's all about that's tough. I mean at the beginning of the trombone solo the drums were all over the place that horn had to find him. ( I mean all over the place as a good thing)
"The lamp is low" . Oscar often* used it to open a show (* but not as often as Falling in love with love). He opened his 2005 concert in London and the hall was on fire ! Another good version on the 'Reunion Blues live' album can be found on spotify.
Any band with great Sam Jones on bass is worth hearing for me. Love Bobby Durham but prefer Sam Jones with Billy Higgins, Louis Hays, Arthur Taylor or Roy Brooks. As to Oscar, one minute he is brilliant and another he kills the music with his endless cliches. But at least he's not boring like so many piano players today!
Same guy in the audience, grabbing his butt, multiple times? Love the trio, the trombone is not synced right, something very wrong there.... just glad these guys could go to Europe and get filmed.

I quite agree 100%,it is a fact that in the vast majority once youve heard one youve heard them all.
exactly, true talent and skill

I feel like I've never seen three literal geniuses at work in the same space before until now
I love how they make it look like that kind of playing is not impossible.
True greatness is in inspiring others that you too can be great!

Simply amazingly wonderful - and more amazing !!!!!
Oscar Peterson trio always superb ! 🎉❤❤❤❤❤
I met Bobby Durham in Paris some years ago and he told how difficult it was to start a concert at this kind of tempo! I had to warm up a lot backstage he told me... But during this time Oscar was at the bar enjoying a drink... 😂
That's why he was the leader. He already put his time into piano.
He has to have had the fastest fingers of any player ever combined with an incredible classical background places him in a speical category of performers. As a 76 year old piano hack, I appreciate his experise..
Check out Eldar Djangirov and Marian Petrescu.
Oscar was likely one of the top 3 jazz pianists of all time and my favorite.
even the trombonist at 22:22 is phenomonal. They all incorporated every singular aspect of jazz and blues develepment the in this preformance. Let it be perfect. Thats it.
50 from now, and they still have that touch, Thanks Masters.
What a trio. We see too rare concerts with the fabulous Bobby Durham

Better now than never.
The Hymn To Freedom intro is timeless and priceless, the energy is overwhelming.
mcrohof I agree that was a different approach to Hymn to Freedom. It suited the venue and energy of the audience.
