OpethToolMetallica Dude, Dissection is and will be my fav band of all times :D But thanks however for the tip ;) Good to know there´s still some people who appreciate that kind of art Jon Nödtveidt has brought to us :) Do you know Lord Belial´s "Enter the Moonlight Gate"?

Dark Funeral - Secret of the black arts have some cool riffs but its still to raw. And newer bands like Thulcandra doesnt really have it, the right atmosphere. Do you know any others?
takeawalkinhell I think the album Athenian Echoes by NIGHTFALL fits very well in this mold...Amazing album! Another one I highly recommend is GATES OF ISHTAR - Dawn of Flames.
One of the most creative approaches to writing Metal as a whole. Reminds me of Storm of the Light's Bane, At the Gates Debut and Opeth's Orchid but for me it's above those two
They just released a statement on Instagram that they will be releasing a new album called shadow of oblivion, a follow up to this album.. I couldn't be more excited
@z k coming of chaos was the album they released after this one, but they were saying in the announcement that their new album is going to be closer in sound to far away from the sun. (A follow up as far as the sound goes not the chronology)
Unimaginably beautiful, along with Sear Bliss.. when I die soon, I want to pass away while I listen to intensely beautiful art work like this, Sear Bliss's Forsaken Symphony and early Dimmu Borgir... I want to gaze up at the night sky and paint the stars with my warm blood as I hold on tight to my White Jackson RR24 preparing for the birth of eternity.. far beyond sorrow, far beyond beauty.. and words have lost all meaning... Sacramentum..Saw a flyer of this record back in 90´s and listened to them in a compilation and enjoyed their "different" "melodic" atmosphere and this album really meant something in underground.

This is honestly the best black metal album with the Finis Malorum ep from them if u can count, Storm of the Lights Bane and the first Abigor releases, this a level above other bands in creativity of every single drum hit or guitar combinations, best black metal u can get!
Sacramentum-Far Away From The Sun, Necrophobic-The Nocturnal Silence and Darkside, Unanimated- Ancient God of Evil , Dawn-Naer Solen Gar Niper and Slaughtersun, Mork Gruning- Tusen ar har gat, Maelstrom Chaos, Lord Belial-Kiss The Goat, Enter The Moonlight Gate, Vinterland-Welcome My Last Chapter, Decameron-My Shadow are the best of swedish melodic black/death metal. Naglfar's Vittra and Noctes' Pandemonic Requiem also well worth checking out. Maybe not quite in the same league as the aforementioned but certainly worth an hour or two of your time.
Just discovered this band a few minutes ago.Surprising since I am an old fucker who was playing this kind of shit in the late 80s-early 90s.Glad I found this one, this album kicks ass.Now I want to go find eveything else they did.
Thanks for putting this up and helping quench my budding desire to explore of the black metal genre. This is epic at the first listen, but I can already sense hings under the surface, rest assured, this album will be purchased
Utterly brillant songwriting and eerie beautiful atmosphere on that album. The more thrashy direction the band took with the following was not as thrilling imho.
Magical masterpiece! They reunited to perform this album live at Maryland Deathfest may 2020 and Netherland Deathfest Also in may. They also stated on their official page that They Will release a new record that is the followup to this masterpiece! Hail the northern darkness!
This album is a true masterpiece and really defines the spirit of melodic black metal where gloomy topics meet an uplifting attitude. Sacramentum deliver effectively developed and impressive songwriting full of majestic and sinister tremolo riffs.
I totally worshipped this band back in the 90's! At the time, I thought comparisons with Dissection were unfair--Sacramentum was more technical and atmospheric, whereas Dissection really wanted to be more of a classic metal band, like the Iron Maiden of the Gothenburg scene (mission accomplished!).
Please don't destroy me: newish to a lot of these metal subgenres (love them), but this sounds a bit more like Black Metal to me than Melodic Death metal. But I could be wrong. Riffs, guitar tone, and the style of growls. But I guess it depends on the lyrical content as well.
I agree with you. I never understood why people called this and Dissection death metal anyway. Maybe it's because the production doesn't "sound like a toaster."
For me, its Dissection and Sacramentum at the top, then everyone else in the genre. I'm torn between the two but I think I've figured it out. This album has better overall songs that I come back and listen to more than most songs from Storm of the Lights Bane, but Thorns of Crimson Death being the greatest metal song ever written makes SOTLB the better album, plus Jon carried that band so much and has a better vocal style imo. At the end of the day, for most metal, its the timbre of the vocals that make or break the band/song. Almost every band has some great riffs, some much more than others, but a great riff is a dime a dozen. A great vocalist is a 1 in a million and really can be the game changer, and I say that as someone who only plays guitar/drums/bass. Also honorable mention but the fact that the song, The Somberlain, exists makes Dissection the better band. But on the other hand, Fogs Kiss, When Night Surrounds Me, and especially Cries From a Restless Soul exists as well and really puts a damper on my decision. Long live Meloblack

Oh yeah! Such an amazing release. And the drum play... pure godlike greatness!
I accidentally bought this twice and I ain't even mad.

That's interesting. I didn't know but yeah I see it averages at $50. Glad I bought it a decade ago for $8.
I totally sold my Moonlight Gate copy in the early 2000s. Very bad call.
