      I use it a lot in my singing for sure and have learned to do it safely and in fact I believe if done right it can help increase full voice vocal range of clean singing because of the need to handle high levels of compression. An even stranger use for it: After being sick and my voice being weakened from it, I sing with a lot of distortion and belting and I find it brings my voice back extremely quick.
      As for TEACHING grit/distortion: I generally don't teach distortion or rasp DIRECTLY, I believe it is best developed INDIRECTLY by simply learning how to belt cleanly properly - which is something that just about everyone WANTING to learn distortion isn't doing right which is why I start there. Remember distortion is an EFFECT, so if the tone underneath that effect is not aligned right the voice actually gets weaker not stronger because you'll just strain.
      Most people try to go for distortion before their clean sound is even remotely close to the right sound. If the tone underneath the grit is wrong then the grit will be wrong and you'll just end up straining and your voice will get worse not better. Learning how to get the clean voice working right is something that I cover extensively in my skype lessons and premium courses - I suggest you start there if you are serious.

    Wanted to check out your explanation of laryngeal tilt and I was pleasantly impressed. I'm a classical singer, teaching in my 60s now and you are spot on my friend....love your teaching style. Your students are lucky to have you.....

    Holy crap. I think I finally got my support under wraps after watching this. I had felt it and gotten close in the past but I over analyzed things and left out the emotional/acting part of the singing. When I incorporated that gut sensation with a non analytical/ emotional mind I had access to my full range in chest voice without any vocal strain whatsoever.

    My goodness your ability to articulate and explain what is going on inside the singer as s/he sings is incredible. I'm the kind of person who needs to know what is going on technically. I would rather have lessons than attempt a DIY

    The tension and connection in the lower abdomen Phil speaks of is 100% Spot On!
    This tension/connection is what I believe is the main precursor to go from your limited chest (M1) range and into the higher notes that just are physically impossible without the tension/connection activated…I learnt/felt the connection while driving my van and doing sirens on ‘ooohhh’ it flowed straight from M1 to M2 with little effort.
    *my Chest M1 range ends at F#4-G4. When I activate the lower abdomen connection it sours from G4 right up to C#5. Please note this happened INSTANTLY the moment the connection was made🙏🏽🌺

    Finally, finally after a long time of research I'm coming across a solid explanation what mixed voice actually is. After so much blah like "mixed voice is blending chest and head resonance" or even "mixed voice is when you keep the 1st formant between the 1st and 2nd harmonics" it's refreshing to hear something that makes sense. It seems to provide a missing clue for the mind to connect with the body in order to master the mixed voice.

      Best advice I can give is to just not even worry about the term mixed voice. It really is just a label that means "you're in chest voice but you're not stuck or jammed up in it".

      @@philmoufarrege I think that's a good advice from a certain point on. One needs to have an idea about the certain adaptation that is required in order not to get stuck though.
      I don't believe in registers anymore, except maybe the whistle register. For me, mixed voice is just singing high with power, while falsetto/head voice is just going very light/breathy up there. I witnessed this first with the "pulse register", that I could in fact learn to transition smoothly between the chest voice and what's supposed to be a separate register. It dramatically increased my useable vocal range. On watching your video it occurred to me that the opposite mechanism seems to be crucial here: The ability to make the vocal folds shorter and increase the vibrating mass while sustaining an appropriate compression and a neutral larynx.

      +dkaida777 Hi, I could....but it wouldn't help you. it isn't so much WHAT exercises you do, it's how you do them. Any exercise can work or not work. If you cannot do it on one exercise you try an exercise that gives you more of a "crutch" or helping hand. As you get better you do simpler exercises that offer less of a crutch.
      The tilt isn't really learned through "an exercise", it is a skill that develops over time with proper guidance and training. It's a particular sensation that must be created (at first manually).
      The tilt occurs from the correct combination of other factors so you can't really just "turn on" the tilt by itself.

    I figured it out two years of training. It fixes a lot of things and not just sinning. It's proper alignment. It's your whole body! You can move your whole body with will power. It takes time to build this coordination.

    Thank you for this explanation about laryngeal tilt. Question on mixed voice... Is it possible to practice mixed voice without being loud?

      it depends what you consider to be loud. While you can do this on a less loud intensity, it will still be considered "loud" and you will need to shut doors and windows if you don't want to be heard. If you are wanting to maintain the volume of a speaking tone then NO you won't be able to be THAT quiet if you want to access the higher notes. The less loud you are the more the voice will want to disconnect into falsetto.

    Is it ok to fill uncomfortamble in the beggining with the tension in the stomach? The sound is bigger but it feels weird will it go away with time? And when I do the cry techique my larynx stays pretty much the same position maybe a bit higher is that really normal is it neutral then? Hope you can answer this thank you!

    hey phil i hope you can answer one more question for me
    when i tense up my belly and hold in air i get tension in the throat but not the tension i had that i could feel while swallowing or talking after i would sing but outside like its the outside muscles that are tense and wont let the note come out .

    Hi Phil I have a question regarding the larynx, are proper support, resonance and vocal cord closure the components to a proper mix and stable larynx? or is it something that is taught separately with different sets of exercises?

      To get the larynx to REALLY stabilize permanently you need to get VERY strong at compressing the vocal cords while the larynx is in a lower position. Check out this video I made a while back

      can the exercises that you demonstrated regarding breaking through the 1st passagio be implied into training my current range before the 1st bridge? i get tense on low notes and my larynx raises. Also my current range is F#2-G4 but I can go up to D5 while sounding very breathy and tense@@philmoufarrege

    I just can't get it. I really want to be able to do that and it would help me a ton. But When I sing like a G5 my larynx just goes so high it disappears from my throat. Same thing when I belt high.
    So Is it possible to sing like a G5 with a totally neutral larynx position (or maybe a little higher but not much) ? Also is there any exercise out there to figure out and/or practice "laryngeal tilting" ? Is it the key to maintaining a neutral larynx all the time?

      Dark Slayer What's happening is that around the F5 there is another "break" just like there is on F4. What you are doing is "pulling" your voice through that break and so the larynx is raising on you. You have to instead work on improving cord closure so that the cords DESIRE to stay together, then you can go up higher without straining.
      GEE and GOO will help you a lot this high. you must focus on keeping the vowel as accurate as possible, don't splat the vowel at all.

      Yep. When you breathe you should feel the sides and back expand. From
      there when you firm up your stomach you should also feel the sides

      Think of it like a guitar. When you want to make a higher pitch you move your finger up the fretboard, which makes the string SHORTER and that's what gives you a higher pitch. You can't "over" shorten the string on the guitar, same with the voice you won't "overtilt". the tilt happens when things are operating more freely so no you'll be fine!!

      your question doesn't really make sense. The larynx doesn't "strain" anything. If your chest voice has NO STRAIN and the larynx is free then as you go higher the larynx will tilt and relaxed instead of jamming up. This allows more range without leaving chest voice.
