    A short video about the annual "Shiroka Laka" mummer carnival in Bulgaria. The mummers (called "kukeri") dress up with spectacular clothes and masks to scare the evil demons. They dance at the sound of traditional Bulgarian music. The whole festival is pretty amazing and we hope you can feel the spirit through this video.

    The Bulgarians are a people of respect that preserved the past and the history, the old people in Europe, the "true Bulgarians"

    I’m american, but my ancestors came from north Germany and fled to Russia for awhile before arriving on American shores and settling in the Midwest in the 1890’s. I know just from studying my ancient history, my ancestors did festivals like this (in Germany, I’m guessing Krampus is the German version of the Bulgarian Kukuri).
    This is extremely fascinating to me, especially because I notice so many similarities between ancient European culture and Ojibwe, Navajo, Tillicum, and many other Native American cultures, which I grew up learning about in school. It makes me wonder if ancient pre-Native Americans interacted with ancient Europeans before making their way into the Americas, and both cultures evolved from a single forgotten culture, or a small handful of forgotten ancient cultures.

      They do the Krampus thing in Switzerland and Austria, too. When I first saw this video, that kind of reminded me of that. But the music they are playing is just WOW. I have Balkan & Greek ancestry. It does reach down into your soul, doesn't it.

      @@melanieanne2066f you don't understand, don't speak, this is an old Bulgarian custom, before there were Greeks and the Greeks. You don't even know what it's for! the territory of today's Greece was part of Bulgaria for many years, do not confuse Greece with the Roman Empire. And the Bulgarians are the Thracians, proven.

      Because back then the people worked their asses off during the early spring, summer and autumn. They plowed the soil, planted the crops, harvest the yield. It was a hard labor, from sunrise till dawn.

    Bulgarians, macedonians, serbs, bosniacs, croats, romanians, moldavians, even some of hungarians and ucrainians share the same genetic ancestry with scandinavians and baltic nations, due to theyr pelasgian heritage. Pelasgians were all people north of greek cities (thracians, illyrians, dacians, gets/goths, sarmatians), and paleogenetics trace them as protoeuropeans (before Europe, before phoenicians/greeks came to Europe).
    The haplogroup I is the only indigenous european haplogroup and when slavs came to Europe they mixed with thracians and other pelasgian tribes found here, that's why such a rich culture and folclore is to be found in Balkan and Carpathian areas... the way in wich such beautiful traditions merged in time along with official religions and cultural changes must be an example for the new European Union. We all (bulgarians, romanians, hungarians, serbians, etc.), we all must resist the western globalization. Not in the way of fighting change, but in the way that our ancestors keeped theyr traditions alive...

      +euhabarnam Pelazgi or Pelagri and Bleguri is the old name of Bulgari transmitted by the Romans and Greeks. Some researchers speak about this.

    • @euhabarnam
      @euhabarnam 8 років тому +3

      The romans have nothing to do with this. Greeks on the other hands used this terminology for ALL tribes north of their cities. All the non-greek tribes. Just like for romans all non-romans were "barbarians" or for the turks all non-muslims were "ghiaur's"... the fact that indeed slavic bulgarians established north of Greek cities is a coincidence, that's history as we know it. But to mistake old thracians (pelasgians) with slavic bulgarians is like mistaken native americans mexcali with spanish mexicans, they both lived on the same land, but in different historical moments...

    • @bobifetski
      @bobifetski 8 років тому +2

      +euhabarnam Even so this tradition you are watching here is a thracian ritual. The most part of our culture and folklore came from those ancient times if one knows it he will not deny

    • @gensunasumus101
      @gensunasumus101 7 років тому

      euhabarnam Well said. Balkan has real culture unlike a lot of Americanized countries which don't have elaborate cusine, traditions, and customs with very deep meaning. We must protect this.

      Serbians doesn't count in this, their fanatic orthodox church and christianity took care of all pagan traditions and folklore, they have nothing from the ancient times now!
      The culmination of this orthodoxy was the slaughters in Bosna!
      Serbians always hated us anyway, they are not worthy of any kind word!

      Това е пародия, просто хумор в образа на попа. Празникът е в С. Широка Лъка и се казва Пес Понеделник. Цяла седмица кукерите хващат минувачите и ги борят, за да прогонят лошото в тях. Много е забавно, а на самия празник има музика, песни, цял ден хора се играят, има хумористични сценки, децата от музикалното училище правят концерт... изобщо е уникално изживяването! ❤️

    • @masubg
      @masubg 8 років тому +3

      +Ashley Price It's an ancient tradition. Kukeri are elaborately costumed Bulgarian men who perform traditional rituals intended to scare away evil spirits.Around New Year and before Lent, the kukeri walk and dance through villages to scare away evil spirits with their costumes and the sound of their bells(called chans). They are also believed to provide a good harvest, health, and happiness to the village during the year.

      Actually, this is a tradition in our bulgarian culture. Everyone is dressed scary and wears bells because it is believed that we will scare the bad spirits away with the looks and the sound of bells and leave the good ones.

      +Persiyana Hristova quello che è rappresentato nel filmato del carnevale di Ottana (Sardegna) sono maschere arcaiche legate alla terra, alla fertilità e rappresentano il mondo animale. Le maschere sono il bue, il toro, la pecora. Non incutono paura, ma evocano la doppia personalità tra corpo e spirito.
