More than 10.6 million voters across the U.S. have cast their ballots in the November election as of Tuesday morning, according to data from the U.S. Elections Project.
With exactly three weeks until Election Day, early voting turnout both in person and via mail is far outpacing that of 2016. By Oct. 16 of the last presidential election, only about 1.4 million voters had cast a ballot.
The soaring level of early voting comes as the coronavirus pandemic has created an unprecedented demand for safer alternatives to casting ballots. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has repeatedly claimed without evidence that expanded mail-in voting will lead to widespread voter fraud.
The project, led by University of Florida professor Michael McDonald, reports that Democrats are leading the historic surge of early voting. Out of 4.6 million mail ballots received, Democrats have cast around 2.6 million.
McDonald emphasizes that high turnout from Democrats thus far should not be interpreted as an indicator of final election results.
“Yes, the numbers are very good for Biden. The campaign has to be pleased since they can leverage the banked voters to more efficiently re-target their supporters who have not voted yet. However, it is very likely Republicans will show up in force to vote in-person,” McDonald wrote on the U.S. Elections Project website.
Over 46 million mail ballots requested across the country have yet to be returned.
“I predict in the coming weeks the Democratic narrative will change from euphoria over the apparent large leads in early voting to concern that a disproportionately large number of younger voters have yet to return their mail ballots,” McDonald wrote.
In-person early voting began Monday morning in Georgia and Tuesday morning in Texas, bringing high turnout and long lines.
NBC News reported on Monday that waits at Georgia voting sites lasted as long as 9 hours and 39 minutes. Counties in the state with large non-White populations in particular reported long lines, supporting research that shows race is a key indicator in how long a voter waits in line at a polling station.
Officials in Harris County, Texas’ most populous county, on Tuesday afternoon reported a record high first day of early voting with 68,000 ballots cast. And that was with five hours of voting still to go.
North Carolina, a key swing state, will begin in-person early voting on Thursday. The state uses a “one-stop” early voting model that allows eligible North Carolinians to register and vote at the same time.
The U.S. Elections Project data shows several states have already exceeded 20% of their total votes from 2016, including Wisconsin, Minnesota, Virginia and Vermont.

It's why you take a day off and go when you have plenty of time. Early voting lets you pick your day too. When I lived in a smaller state I'd vote on election day, but in a larger state, sometimes you don't have that luxury to just go after work and expect to get in and out in good time.

I would support us making NOV 3rd (or whichever day that year) a national holiday.
Yeah Biden has talked about making election day a national holiday but i don't know if he will follow up on doing it. Regardless, it should be a national holiday to incourage voter turnout. Election Day on a Tuesday was written down into law back in the 18th century because it would give the people enough time to go to church on a Sunday, go back and rest on a Monday and vote on a Tuesday but today this makes no sense whatsoever, Election Day should be a national holiday, it's absurd that people have to take a day off to do something they may be already discouraged to do by the fact that they don't care about politics or the politicians running.
One day to vote needs to be a national holiday. For Pete's Sake we're choosing the President. A teachable moment to get all Americans involved.
Why bother if we can have this early voting every year?

I honestly hope so. I would love for both American voter turnout to be so high and for us to be brought back to balance. A vote for blue isn't a vote for liberalism; it's a vote to bring us back to the center.

Which is quite dangerous when there’s never been any sort of problems with voter fraud by mail. It’s pretty hard to fake legitimate ballots that are only sent to you when you provide ID number, that the system will immediately recognize is a duplicate if tried twice.

I know right, we have had BLM riots going on for months and cities like Portland are still not doing what is necessary to make their streets safe. California forced Disney to lay off thousands of employees because their governor won't let them work, New York just forced a high profile couple to cancel their wedding on the spot, and Nevada's governor has lead his state to the highest unemployment in the country. I can't believe that it takes people this long to vote anywhere in this country. I live in CA and I have never had to wait to vote. They let us use plenty of places as a polling place, so I've voted at a fire station, church, community center, etc. It's honestly shameful seeing these lines anywhere in the country.
Indiana is hard to vote as well. We have very few voting locations. I would take my day off to vote this time.
I am in Texas and luckily my small town only has the fire department as a polling place we have curbside voting and it took me less than 10 minutes to do it.

Point taken but to be fair mate you've only got 20 million people of voting age. That many people have already voted in the US and the polls are just opening. That said it's ridiculous that people including senior citizens are out standing in the rain for hours to vote. Part of it is the turnout is more than usual and there's a lot of interest in the election along with fear spreading by Republicans that voting by mail isn't safe. And I believe a lot of people just want to send a message. They have nearly three more weeks to vote and surely the lines will thin out, but the battle cry is too big to rig and the people want a clear winner on November 4.
