Tutorial: How to Setup Google Analytics 4 (GA4) with your Shopify Store (Also: Google Analytics 3)

In this video, we are going to walk step by step through the process of configuring Google Analytics 4 (GA4) with your Shopify store. Google Analytics 4 is the new and improved analytics platform from Google that allows you to track not only just your website, but apps as well. There are also improved reporting and metrics within Google Analytics 4 that you can't find anywhere else.
Since GA4 is not currently supported by default in Shopify, and there is no deadline as to when GA4 will be supported by default, we need to modify the "theme.liquid" file in your Shopify store. The majority of users should be able to do this with their regular admin Shopify account, but some legacy Shopify accounts do not have this ability. For these "legacy" accounts, I have included instructions on how to configure your Shopify store with Google Analytics 3 as well.

Hello. Thank you for the video! I have more complicated question since I am beginner. First we are not on Shopify plus, we are on Shopify (79US month). We also have option with Advanced Shopify. Will GA4 work with Advanced Shopify? (Dot Yuson made an interesting comment on adding code to checkout.liquid - will we be able to do the same with advance shopify version).
1. Can shopify be integrated with GA4 through Google Tag Manager (I have installed google tag manager code to head of liquid).
2. So far there 2 options for GA4 given: installing global tag (which youhave mentioned and showed in your comment) or linking throught tag manager (GA4 configurations-all pages). I did it through tag manager with GA4 configurations and all pages. Checked preview and it all works. Checked on debugview and all works too. After I had entered realtime overview and saw my activity. The problem is that GA4 realtime overview does not get any life data at all (complete ZERO). While Google Analytics data worsk fine and I got instant updates.
3. I am also confused with google tag manager. I have installed the code to the head but there is also google analytics account UA-xxxxxx in the Preferences-google analytics-google analytics account (there is nothing in - additional google analytics javascript). My question should I keep the UA code in the google analytics account or should I delete it, since I have installed google tag manager code into the head in liquid. (I have google tag for google analytics too - universal analytics-all pages)
4. Would you recommend using google tag manager or global tags system instead? I am confused.

Hello. Thank you for this. If I was able to insert GA4 in header, do I leave the Shopify Preferences - Google Analytics account empty or have GA 3 code?

This is a great help - so thank you... I am very frustrated with GA4 - seems no one is ready - shopify just being one example - but5 even Google themselves... you cannot link GA4 with Search Console!! How "jump the gun" is that??
