I feel like he doesn't feel that he has gotten the attention he deserves but I disagree. His music has held up really well and I think people all over the world respect his talent a lot
Wow he worked with Peter Tork but as waiters! Sometimes life just throws you a curve ball! This guy should sell his story - sounds like a hollywood movie to me! Very inspiring story Matthew!
I am intrigued by this interview. I too confronted a "man in charge" and my career ended shortly after my disillusionment. Best move I ever made. I am the better man for it.
I was 11 in 1983, not yet a teenager. But I remember my older brothers' teen friends listening to Break My Stride. Those were my impressionable years, and I thought these "older" people were cool and that everything they liked was cool. I eventually grew up, and Break My Stride was always a song that stayed in the fringes of my memory. Watching this Matthew Wilder interview now, I'm so elated to find that he has become so successful despite what seemed like the end of his career early on, and that there is such a decent man behind this fantastic, uplifting song. ❤️
"Break my stride" was the first music piece I ever bought when I was 12 years old! I bought the 45 record single at the local record shop and learned how to use my Mom's record player to play it! Thanks Mathew! And thank you Jared for this interview. It's nice to be able to know the guy that changed my musical world.
Yes, the interview was well done--it was pleasant--just...ha ha, Jared...for future reference, please consider a slight adjustment to the instances where you interject your comments, because your comments are welcome, relevant and appropriate in regards to setting and maintaining the mood you have developed for the interview, but at the point where you interject them, the volume levels between your recorded voice and Matt's are slightly disparate...it throws off the rhythm of the interview...slightly, enough to cause a minimal jolt in the synchronization...just a timing issue...editing, pretty much anything, is an intensive effort.
He did later get to do a video for that album though! The Kid's American. Great song and I would have loved to hear him talk about that song and that video.
I love hearing this story about how Matthew produced one of the biggest albums of the 90's... No Doubt's "Tragic Kingdom" that launched their appeal to the mainstream... man still had the touch. The 90's seemed fairly active and good to him.
I feel somewhat disappointed that Matthew had not talked about his time spent touring with Rickie Lee Jones, particularly when (I think) he wrote "Love Above The Ground Floor", which sounds like a direct reference to RLJ's song "We Belong Together", and its pre-chorus sounds like the melody that later became's RLJ's hit, "Satellites". I've always felt I Don't Speak The Language was one of the finest pop albums of the 1980s. I hope one day it becomes recognized as such.
Wow.. incredible interview! I love Matthew ❤️ what a Legend and yet so humble still. All that crazy in the beginning was horrific and grounding yes but I literally had to find out what happened to him bc he was/is so talented, loved his voice and the words and music to Stride which are STILL The Best I’ve ever heard! I was always waiting for that next hit of his and just knew that something wasn’t right that it seemed to never come. But he has more than made up for it behind the scenes, I now know. What a journey!! He should do the video now and re-master his other songs too! Thank you both for sharing ✌️💜❤️
Great interview. Mathew seems like a really sweet person that the music industry would have ground up like hamburger, but apparently 'that' didn't happen. Good for him
As an actor of 30 something years who lived, worked, somewhat succeeded and ultimately failed in Hollywood, I relate so much to his story. I respect this guy very much and I hope he realizes what an actual music legend he really is.
Tremendous interview Jared! I knew very little about Mathew Wilder but came away believing he is a musical genius in many ways and really cares about music and all those involved. One of the few interviews that I had to watch from beginning to end.
During the early '80s I worked with Arthur Brown and Jimmy Carl Black, who had a carpentry company together. Each had been on big stages, and played gigs together around Austin during those years. Each continued making music and each holds an important position in the history of music. Jimmy died of cancer in '08, God rest his soul. Arthur, a licensed counselor, played on, and released a new album last year, (2022), at the age of 80. I am reminded of my mom, who plays with her little combo every week, at the same age as Brown, with no expectation of reward or fame. I guess my point is, rare occurrences aside, making art is a passion that may or may not pay the bills. It's worth it.
My whole family loved "Stride." and I remember some stations playing "The KId's American." I didn't know the rest of the story. Thank you for producing and making this video. In my book, Wilder has NEVER been forgotten.
This has been a very insightful perspective to how so many talented, creative and driven individuals continue to remain relevant even when their names become less mainstream. That statement is not a slight or meant to discredit Mr. Wilder’s success, if anything I am truly inspired from his story. I knew the “Break My Stride” song, but always wondered how it’s performer came to prominence, and what became of them. Hearing Matthew explain and detail the circumstances surrounding the chronology of success during “Stride” it now makes complete sense why there wasn’t ANY of the usual support and follow up to build on the success of the song, the artist and why it became a One Hit Wonder. While that reality is saddening, Mr. Wilder’s drive to continue his career goals and drive are so inspiring and admirable that every ensuing success which has followed, remains clearly his own work and very hard -fought. The man works tirelessly to succeed and those around him RECOGNIZE his relentlessness. His story is truly remarkable and absolutely what makes those who are passionate about music, continue to remain relevant and successful in an industry which is continually changing and the artists who are able to maintain a presence, establish a reputation for excellence such as Mr. Wilder, may not necessarily be living the dream as they envisioned, but definitely are thriving successfully in an industry where most can only dream of being able to break into at any level. Excellent Interview and extremely informative 👍
The music business is more business than music. Most of why “Break My Stride” was a hit as because the head of the record label it was released off of used clever promotional sleight of hand to convince the right people to have it played.
In 84 I was a 16 yo HS Sophomore. If you were around then, you have no idea how huge this song was and to me still is. People will be taking this song and singing this song well into the next generation after generation it just resounds whatever was up Matthews ass that caused him to write that song I think all of us have had that same bug at one time or another thanks Matthew
New subscriber ! , Melbourne , Victoria, Australia .. I never realized why break my stride never had an official video , now I know why Thanks .. I'm actually old enough to remember this song when it came out .. I was about 11 ...
Amazing how many ways I can relate to Matthew and his career journey. Like him, I never actually achieved the artistic autonomy I wanted while, at the same time, remain grateful that I enjoyed what most folks would consider an impressive journeyman career. I was at Pasha from the get-go. And, having worked with Czaba (who I liked enormously), I was aware that "Break My Stride" had been recorded at Pasha. However, although I was an artist on the label, then went on to an A&R position, while penning tunes for Heart, Cheap Trick, Beach Boys, Peter Noone, Kick Axe, King Kobra, and others, earning a Grammy nomination and platinum status for the Staying Alive soundtrack, and producing Kick Axe, Outlaws, and Rhythm Corps, singing with Quiet Riot, etc. for some reason, I don't recall ever meeting Matthew. (Sorry, if my recollection is askew.) Regardless, I'm happy to get to know him even a little bit from watching this interview. Kudos! Well done!
Thanks so much for the comment! Sounds like you’ve had quite a fantastic career that would be just as intriguing to discuss and for people to hear about!
A lot of people questioned why Matthew didn’t have more hits to follow Break My Stride because he had that gift to write catchy pop songs and now we know why but the guy is incredibly grounded and humble what a lovely interview with such a nice down to earth guy.
I would rather be a one-hit-wonder than a one-trick pony. Look you just took longer than others to get the respect you deserve but like I said you had the musical foundation and whatever it was in the industry you knew how to do it or you learned it quick, I guess those 34 years getting your ego and check was the best thing that could have ever happened to you looking back. Ok continue
Get up dress up and show up. The best ability one has to offer is availability. People say lucky right place right time seems to me you make your own luck in this world.
Well, I mean its really called being a one hit wonder. If the man had made another song that was of the caliber of Break My Stride, then another and another..thats how you match contemporaries. Nice guy but make more hits and the fame will come.
This guy was the image of what homosexuals looked in the eighties but he was married to a woman ,with a kid and rough, tough talking to a music/ mafia producer. Such times were the 1980s. 😂😂
Gotta wonder what his other songs sound like besides Break my stride. If they sound similar or if they’re different. Also wondering if he had any other minor hits.
Man, I'd pay to watch a Netflix series of Matthew Wilder whipping No Doubt into shape in the studio.
The glory is in the struggle.
Wonderful interview. Matthew’s humility and his story is so inspiring. I’d love to watch a movie on his life
Yeah. The whole story is bullshit, and he's a bullshitter. No wonder he never made it.
Same here
His first hit at 30. He deserved it. Such a sweet little guy with a huge voice
Absolutely! Are you the Downtown Julie Brown from MTV?!!
True dat
Is there an age requirement for music?
Cool interview, super likeable guy. You can actually feel that he's still a bit upset that he didn't get the opportunities after Stride.
What a sweet, humble, admirable man.
Wow,,,he worked with no doubt,,that's amazing,,what a creative guy,,
I feel like he doesn't feel that he has gotten the attention he deserves but I disagree. His music has held up really well and I think people all over the world respect his talent a lot
Matthew is a fucking legend . The composition of Break my stride is incredible ... and post 1983.
If you were growing up in the 80s this is a generation defining song.
Wow he worked with Peter Tork but as waiters! Sometimes life just throws you a curve ball! This guy should sell his story - sounds like a hollywood movie to me! Very inspiring story Matthew!
Absolutely Thanks for checking it out!!
Yes, Matt, sell the story, it is an appealing one.
Would be a great flick for sure!
Great stuff.. fascinating stories
what a story! Thank you for sharing.
Humility and perseverance. Really good life lessons here for musicians and producers of any art. This was wonderful!
Absolutely right! Thank you so much for checking it out and for commenting!

I want to hear more of his stories.
BEST SONG OF ALL TIME
IT IS TIMELESS
Wow was the big fan of the song didn't know much about the artist I do now so glad took this journey well-done Matthew well done
What an interesting story. Happy he achieved success.
What an interesting interview. I'm glad I watched it.
The struggle is real and so is the music living out your dreams vividly
He did later get to do a video for that album though! The Kid's American. Great song and I would have loved to hear him talk about that song and that video.

Fascinating interview, could have listened for hours; wish there was a Part2!
Well done. Nice to see a down-to-earth interview.
Great interview. Mathew seems like a really sweet person that the music industry would have ground up like hamburger, but
apparently 'that' didn't happen. Good for him
He is in fact a sweet person! ...but he's got moxie! Thanks for checking it out!

Great interview! Such an interesting story and path
His songs gain my attention.

Thanks for watching!

Like listening to a guru speak

This is WILD(er)! What a artist and this is a treat. What a respectful interview.
What a great guy Matthew is and he produced one of my favorite records of the 90's Tragic Kingdom. Respect for his musical integrity & honesty
This is so great! Thanks

So Inspiring
Very candid, very interesting. What a lovely guy! One of the best interviews I have seen.
Thanks for the awesome interview. I think it's high time we got that animated video for "Break My Stride" from Matthew Wilder!
Brilliant interview. Could have listened all day.

Thanks so much for the comment! Sounds like you’ve had quite a fantastic career that would be just as intriguing to discuss and for people to hear about!
In regards to the rise and fall of his own solo music, Wilder sounds like he was made as well as broken by record company politics.
A lot of people questioned why Matthew didn’t have more hits to follow Break My Stride because he had that gift to write catchy pop songs and now we know why but the guy is incredibly grounded and humble what a lovely interview with such a nice down to earth guy.
This was great. I was a huge fan of that song and of his career. As Ron Burgundy would say, he was kind of a big deal!
Indeed! Kind of a big deal! :) Thanks for watching!
It seemed more like the single overshadowed him ultimately.
Gwen’s brother (from No doubt) was also an incredible story boarder on The Simpsons
This was a wonderful interview.
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed!
I’m agreeable on if he would have had a music video, break my stride could have gone to number one. Sometimes humility is king.
After my divorce I used ‘Stride’ as my mantra. Got me to stand up and move on with my life.
Bouncing off the Wall
Let him talk, wait for him to stop before interrupting
Guy was smart and hungry.
That song was catchy but not a career song. Still he should’ve gotten a music video done😊
Did he say he had a wife and kid by the time he wrote break my stride?
I would rather be a one-hit-wonder than a one-trick pony. That's why he didn't have a video... That sucks so bad and right in the beginning of MTV...😥
Joe Isgro is why. That man was a Gambino soldier. That's exactly why the feds were sitting in the corner.
Sheesh, what though career circumstances he had to face.
Get up dress up and show up. The best ability one has to offer is availability. People say lucky right place right time seems to me you make your own luck in this world.

Mayday Commander
What happened with your audio? You sound like you have the mic down your throat and Matt's is a couple feet away.
Like I can literally hear you breathing over his speech
I mean 25:25. Who coughed?
It always makes me angry when I see great artists screwed over by their horrible mangers, record companies, etc. :(
This guy was the image of what homosexuals looked in the eighties but he was married to a woman ,with a kid and rough, tough talking to a music/ mafia producer. Such times were the 1980s. 😂😂
This would've been so much better if the interviewers nose whistle wasn't so annoying lol
We can here your breathing…
You get off the hamster wheel by starting your own business
Best advice stear away from Ska.
what ana amazing talented person. no words for what a talent this man has
Gotta wonder what his other songs sound like besides Break my stride. If they sound similar or if they’re different. Also wondering if he had any other minor hits.
