I would like to know how the functional areas develop in relation to volume of data needed . How much data does the mind need and when to form its functional areas

That is an interesting question. Perhaps, attention needs to be considered as well, since if we were to only consider volume of data in formation of the functional areas, well then arguably the auditory cortex should be bigger than the visual cortex since we never turn shut off our ear drums, but we certainly close off light to our retinas for nearly 1/3 of the day. Or another one would be that the primary somatosensory cortex should be bigger than the primary motor cortex since we take in much more sensory information than we output motor function; research in the cerebellum has shown a 40:1 input-output ratio, however the cerebellum has much more sophisticated function that just outputting motor function.
However, we pay much more attention to visual information and much more attention to our motor functions than all the sensory information that comes in. But then how/where exactly does attention arise in the brain? and it shows up very early on, as the peeps at CBMM have shown :)

Hardware is very important if you want AI to develop itself. With traditional hardware you need to hand design AI which is not scalable.
