Any questions about the lens? This isn't my usual long-term review, but I really enjoyed my experience! Free teaser of my Davinci Resolve Powergrades: geni.us/ATmBco.
@@johnstamw yeah bro, this is now definitely on my radar. I wanted the other anamorphic lens but after awhile, I changed my mind because of the blue flare
Thank you for a great video. I've been wanting to get into anamorphic filmography, but the cost of good lenses was just too prohibitive. I was even tempted to delve into smartphone filmography with the cheap anamorphic lenses they had, but I just couldn't bring myself to buy a whole new system that doesn't come close to the quality of my X-H2 and other bodies. I already own all my accessories such as filters, gimbals, etc... for my mirrorless systems. This lens ticks a lot of boxes for me as well. I also really like the 1.6 ratio and the neutral flare. I think this will be a lens that I will put at the top of my list for my next purchase.
Nice footage! Brother, let me ask you... what kind of stabilization you used? I noticed some artifacts that can be from digital stabilization but the possibility of being due to IBIS stabilization kinda worried me about buying it.
@@vitorg.delduque367 it can be ibis at times because ibis stabilizing anamorphic is really tricky. You can turn off ibis and maybe get better results in post only or using gimbal or something but I chose to allow ibis and live with it!
I just got their adapter and pairing it with the night walkers. Loving the look I’m getting. Yes I don’t have the compression of a 1.6 or 2X but love the aspect ratio and minimal to little flare.
The question is if Sirui will continue to expand the Saturn anamorphic line AND if they plan to continue to include the X mount. I absolutely want that neutral flare, I wonder if the Laowa Nanomorph with the silver flare works similarly or if the flare is silver no matter the color of the light source. Laowa's line is more comprehensive at the moment, but I'll wait and see if these things will change because I'm in no rush to buy these lenses right now.
I dont understand how this full-frame lens on the Fuji X mount (APS-C), wouldn't it be a much worse lens than the other full-frame sensor/mount options that Sirui offers on this lens? Using a crop factor calculator it would be close to a 53.6mm at F4.2. Do you have another 35mm APS-C lens to test it against? Your footage still looks amazing, but I don't know how to explain the sensor size differences. Thanks so much.
I'm not exactly sure what some of your comment means so I'll just start from scratch: this is an anamorphic lens which offers "full frame" coverage meaning that it is suitable for use on larger sensors and therefore it also works for aps-c. And I'm definitely not the anamorphic focal length+aspect ratio math expert hahah but I think it works like this -- Focal Length(35) x Crop Factor(1.5)/Anamorphic(1.6). So horizontal equivalent focal length then is about 33, but the vertical is normal crop factor about 52. The F.o.V gets messy with the horizontal/vertical differences. As per the aperture I have no idea how to do those equivalents haha!
Great video John! Purchased the lens based on your review. Is there a specific setting I need to make sure it's set on with the X-H2s for this lens to work best? Also, how important do you think a diopter for this lens? Thanks man!
hey!! That's awesome to hear you enjoyed the review. and not technically a "best" way but shooting open gate with this is tons of fun to produce approx 2.4:1 aspect ratio. and for most 'narrative style' work, I don't think you'll need a diopter necessarily unless you wanna get very close then maybe it would be good, but yeah there were a few times I woulda liked to have one!
@@johnstamw Thanks John. will try open gate but it eats up so much space! :) Any advice on the best way to desqueeze the clip in Premiere? When you try to modify the clip and interpret and conform the clip, the only option you have 1.33 or 1.5 - what do you do for 1.6? Any thoughts on this would be much appreciated. Thanks John!
Man ballsy move filming without de squeeze lol u killed it tho.. I think I would just handheld everything like I normally do anyway . I can’t say I always will.. did u only use a 35mm for the whole wedding? If so how did that go?
hahaha I got some practice in beforehand and felt confident! I did use this lens for the whole wedding except for dancing footage because I wanted the lowlight of f1.8. And it went well for me, love the footage I got and never really felt limited!
@@johnstamw - I was curious about that as well. Did you crop the regular footage so it matched the 1.6 ratio? If so, did the footage mix in well? This is something I was thinking about as I would have to shoot like this for low light and macro.
@@johnstamw Not rude at all :) It was just a clumsy way to ask if an anamorphic lens designed for a full-frame sensor maintains the correct horizontal and vertical perspectives when used on a aps-c camera. Having watched your video and the beautiful images; the answer is, obviously, yes. Really love your channel.
Thanks Im thinking to buy a X-H2 or Lumix S5 to shot anamorphic, but no see menu of capture anamorphic videos on the X-H2 can you tell me about, I really need a external monitor to deezquese the video I know that but can you choise the x display 1.33x or 2.0x or 1.5x ? thanks
for us the "full frame" component of the lens won't make much difference except possibly guarantee of non-vignette, maybe less edge distortion, maybe sharpness? Not sure on that, but really it just matters for full frame shooters that it resolves their sensor. It's only important to say it because they also have a line up of anamorphics that are for APS-c that are only 1.8x stretch.
yeah that's fair, I don't think I realized my review is the only one. Normally I count on other reviewers to share nice studio footage in their videos haha
UNDER 1K. The link goes to their new Carbon Fiber lens and it's 1299. Insane. I want one, but not for that price. Plus they are out of the V1 1.33 aspect.
What is the under 1K part? Did I say that? Yes the carbon fiber Saturn lenses are incredible. At 1.66x and this size/weight + image/build quality they could be charging more than 1299. If you were able to try a lens you would find very quickly that these are not “budget quality” they’re top tier but priced about as low as possible I think they could probably be. Mind you, I’m an affiliate so you can ignore me, but you’ll notice I don’t affiliate with hardly any brands because I require that I’m allowed to use their products before making a decision about any partnership and I always retain the right to a negative review.
interesting presentation - but why are your videos and the whole film here so "unsahrp>"? extrem low resolution? So it looks as if the lens produces that softness, which in reality is not the case..
I have been looking for anamorphic lenses for my zcam e2 f6 and fuhi h2s for months. Between great joy, and the various low coat alternatives and adapters I am going crazy. This one seems between weight and use the best choice, but I'm held back by the look they give. I don't see much diference between this lens and a spherical one. They are very sharp and neutral, with little character (which maybe can be added in post) but I also don't see much micro contrast and separation, even the bokeh doesn't look the best to me. Great everything else, neutral flare, weight, price etc erc. 7 months later how do you find it? Have you had a chance to try other focal lengths?

Great review! How do you find the 35mm focal length vs the 50mm you tried before? Focal length-wise.

You can do proper focus over viewfinder ?? as all is stretch and focus peeking not working much ...
you are able, but it is difficult. It works much easier to have a monitor.

How did you connect the camera and the lense...it's for full frame.
It's a native X-Mount lens, the 'full-frame' applies to image coverage for this lens series.

Is this better or the same like the f1.8
this is a different world sorta, hard to compare!

no internal "anamorphic" modes, but 6k 3:2 is a good aspect ratio for anamorphic
what model is the nikon ?
the nikon em

When you use this lens for photography or videography, are you able to see through the screen the final framing, so you can better frame your shots?
You'd need to be using a monitor that would "desqueeze" the image.
