    In an earlier episode it was mentioned that Ed & Al's souls likely got tangled during their taboo transmutation, which is why Ed can eat and sleep for Al's body. I think that's why when Ed got near death, Al collapsed at the same moment.

    • @CastSenpai
      @CastSenpai  2 роки тому +19

      Yes, that is true. It also explains why Ed seemingly grows much more in some of the following episodes as Al's soul is seemingly being pulled to his body.

    There’s this comment I saw in a demon slayer’s review that really resonated with me. The mc’s really kind and compassionate, REALLY kind and compassionate and someone else comments that he’s too kind and that’s a weakness. The reviewer pointed out that at first, the mc wasn’t kind, he was soft and chose to be kind afterward, because kindness is a choice.
    I think that applies to Edward and Alphonse’s situation as well. A lot of characters see them as soft because they refuse to kill but they aren’t soft, they’re compassionate. It’s a choice, it’s willing and it takes strength to be so, and to stay true to one’s own belief even when everyone around you seems to say that it’s naive. In a lot of ways, the duo IS naive but I prefer seeing them as resolute. It takes strength to refuse to kill someone, when you have all the reasons in the world to do so. It takes strength to forgive someone when the person has thoroughly wronged you. There’s strength in Edward and Alphonse’s beliefs and there’s commitment. I really look up to them as human beings for this

      Totally agree, well put. They may be stubborn and naïve about it, but for what it’s worth, I think that’s perfectly acceptable. They are insanely tough kids.

    Kimblee kind of has never been at full power in either of his fights. In the Scar fight, he himself mentioned how he was rusty from being in prison for years while Scar was fighting non stop killing state alchemists, and in this fight, like he mentioned, he just got out of the hospital. I really like how even though Kimblee is definitely a threat, that's almost got nothing to do with his alchemy.

    This ending song is just so next level, especially with some of the later 40s episodes which become so hype. Also, Heinkel picking up that Philosopher's Stone ends up being really important, in a way that is so impressive to me by a writing standpoint because it's just so natural.

    I'm not sure but I believe that it was Father and Hoenheim that brought alchemy to the East and West in general. It's possible that no other nation on the planet had alchemy yet, until the portal of truth was opened by Hoenheim and the Dwarf. Xerxes was an ancient civilization that possibly developed alchemy thus making it the most advanced civilization on Earth at the time, much like Amestris considering the Ishvalans even by the show's timeline hadn't adopted alchemy yet. It wasn't until Scar's brother that the Ishvalans had a chance to fight back against the Amestrian military who widely adopted alchemy as a weapon of war. I'm just kinda rambling but it's a fun little thing to consider that Hoenheim and the Dwarf are the ones that basically created alchemy for the rest of the world.

    another thing in the writing i love in this EP, Is that His mercy to His opponents got him impaled, but Also saved 2 lives wich in turn helped him indo the damage and lift him, It Is not just pandering, but actually showing real conectes consequences over His choices, or when he took the 2 guys hinself instead of letting Briggs men get involved, It would only end with blood, both the kimeras and the Briggs soliders, outstanding move, a convicción of steel

    Afaik gold is actually called perfect metal due to its reduction potential.
    In episode 18, Fu said that the alchemy from the "sage" was combined with Xing's traditional technique to form alkahestry so you're right about something influenced the way it works.

    (maybe I'm wrong but read to the end) i never thought of this until now but when Ed healed himself by using his life force he didn't clap his hands or make a circle or anything like that, he did it like with a philosopher's stone when u just need to have it for it to work which tells us he really did use a different "type" of alchemy than what he mostly use. I think it's cool

    Yohsi's purpose in the show is to help them get through the mine, quickly. First, he suggests they go through the mine. Then, he finds the map in the mining office. Last, he explains that the dynamite wouldn't explode. Kimbley probably would catch them if they didn't have his help.

    Kimblee seems to get beaten a lot in his fights. I'm willing to bet his alchemy/fighting style is much better suited to taking out large groups of regular soldiers, but not too great in a close-quarters 1v1

    That was a really interesting observation about how Father and Hoenheim influenced the alchemy of the places they went to. Hohenheim is good natured and so Xingese alchahestry is primarily used for healing, whereas Amestrian Alchemy is used for militaristic purposes.

    It would be cool if those chimera soldiers could use the stone to heal Ed but they can't. The stone makes it so you can break the laws of equivalent exchange when performing alchemy. But you still need to KNOW how to perform alchemy.

    one of the things that makes fma my favorite anime is because of how much i identify with the main character. This scene is in my top 3 to tell the truth, I continue to suffer every time I see it (which are not few) and while holding my breath, Ed is clear that he must "pay for his naivety", but far from retracting, he remains faithful to his principles, accepted the consequences, one is faithful to oneself, to one's values. This vision of things leaves him out of being a deluded and naive child, idealistic perhaps, but also aware of his reality, he knows that he can fail and lose, but at least he will do it defending what he believes, even that put in danger the people he loves, something that many will judge harshly, but I think Ed knows that there are values much greater than what we can see in this world. More than naivety, it is a genuine conviction for respect for life, whoever it is, and I completely agree with Ed (my favorite character), see you in the next chapter. Remember: We are all Philosopher's Stones of a single priceless soul.

    The idea of a "true" alchemy or true knowledge independent of human experience is fascinating, but seems kinda contrary to (what I see as) the show's stance that subjective human experience IS the truth; that by virtue of being human, we can only experience a part of the truth that we recognize in ourselves. (How truth appears differently to each person, etc.)

    • @CastSenpai
      @CastSenpai  2 роки тому +2

      Truth is a very abstract concept in both FMAB as well as life itself. I am having a lot of thoughts about how it is presented in the fullmetal universe lately, hoping I get a chance to talk about it in a future episode.
      But just off the top of my head, you may be right. Though for me, I feel as if there *may* be an objective truth (represented by the character "Truth"?), humans can never seek to truly find or understand it without it being tainted by their touch. So in many ways, yes, subjective human experience is the truth. The only one we can comprehend, at least. Just some thoughts on it.

    • @Ryan_gogaku
      @Ryan_gogaku 2 роки тому

      @CastSenpai Agreed. Whether it exists somewhere or not, and whether humans can ever experience or access it or not are in principle separate questions, but if we can't ever hope to access objective truth, then the best we can hope for is extrapolation from sharing many separate subjective truths. I think the philosopher of science Karl Popper was one of the more prominent advocates of that.

    • @Ryan_gogaku
      @Ryan_gogaku 2 роки тому

      @CastSenpai Sorry, one more comment, but this goes back to the "if 'all' is not in/of the one, then 'all' is nothing" quote. If we could somehow access the "objective truth," but in the process we have removed ourselves and our own experience from understanding it or interpreting it, then have we really "understood" anything at all? What use would that knowledge have? We would've gained an "all" that has no grounding or applicability to the "ones" that make it alive in the first place.

  • @InanisNihil
    @InanisNihil 2 роки тому +1

    heres my understanding of this ..
    iron to gold from a tarnished being to a golden divine perfect being... lmao.. eldren rings fans know what im getting at xD
    gold = hermprodite in paganism.. aka the PERFECT BEING.. being embrasive of both ones feminity and masculinity..
    even in alchemy irl mythology.. perfect being was also depicted as one being being both male and female...
    genshin players should sorta also catch on to this with albietos story and his mother "gold/rheindottore"
    the negative thing about that is... this "perfect/immortal being" and going from iron to gold.. from a "lowley" being to a "god hood" and "immortality
    requires u to view life in an ranking system of "inferior to superior" essentially..
    aka rather then accept urself as iron and seeing nothing wrong with it.. where can then geniunelly improve urself.. instead one obessess with being "golden" and thus it usually leads to all kinds of horrid things one will do just to be BETTER then what they are..
    its the denial of ur NATURAL self and wanting to be more then what u are.. and it requires some bs justification and excuse one tells themselves as if they "deserve it"
    so here i feel father going west and mr ho going east and both developing different forms of it... in a way represent two "humans" each one taking the opposites approach...
    father wants to be golden..
    father views himself as GOLD and SUPERIOR and views all other life including humans as "infeior" iron.. thus why they are a resource to him...
    on the flip side.. mr ho.. is ok with being iron...
    thus he just used what he had and knew to create alchehestry to simple help progress and improve current peoples life.. aka he never saw himself nor wanted to be supeior to other beings...
    and in no way has a ideology of inferior or superior...
    conclusion in my mind.. mr ho is GOLDEN yet accepts his iron
    while
    father is iron and rejects and covets his GOLD he STOLE from others...
    hence why alchmeny and alchestry are polar opposites in who they work.. at least thats how i see it...
    so seeking immortallty and perfect being is a massive negative and in no way benefical to any life forms... not even the seeker of it.. rejection of ur iron self so much so that u'll do anything to be GODLY in the eyes of EVERYONE ELSE.. U NEED OTHERS TO BE INFERIOR TO EVEN PRETEND TO BE SUPERIOR... thats flawed thinking and dangerious.. xb

    Was glad you liked this episode as much as I do. It is weird because I was shocked by the scene of Ed being impaled all three times I watched Brotherhood. The first two times I somehow managed to forget this happenedand was surprised each time. Saddly I won't forget it again but I do love it all. For a start, throughout the episode they bring up Ed's unwillingess to kill and then they try to show how Ed doesn't need to with his interlect with Alchemy and how he wins briefly against Kimbley. This all end up backfiring and he ends up in a fatal situation because of this, just like everyone warned. But because he saved the Chimeras he was able to be helped in return but still held true to his beliefs, using his own life force to heal himself. This is without mentioning that the injury is one of the most painful looking ones in anime. How thick the blood is, the way it is impaled through his gut, how his eyes widen and his pupils shrink when he passes out and also the scream.... yeah, it truly sells how agonising it is. As other commentors have mentioned, Arakawa, the author based this pain off of her own experience of child birth and if what I said already isn't proof of that, I think it pays off well.
