The Boeing 747-8 Vs 747-400 - What’s The Difference?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 вер 2024
- With launch dates 20 years apart, the Boeing 747-8 is the update to the iconic 747-400. With the immense popularity of the -400, Boeing had hoped for the same levels of success for the newer -8. The newer model hasn’t seen that success, despite being better in every way. Let’s look at the two models of 747 and the difference that 20 years of innovation can produce.

My favourite things about the 747s are the 4 engines, the double decks, and just how beautiful it is.
it is
Best looking aircraft!! Legit
Yeah. So much slicker then the the a380
@@davidquak4398 and more cost-effective up to its maximum seating cap and cargo cap. it has 4 787-8 engines.
@@sarthsingh3271 Your opinion, though the concorde is my personal favourite by far.
No aircraft will ever replace 747.
Goodbye Queen of the skies.💔
true.
it is so sad
That's what they said about the Lockheed Constellation... and then the 747 came along.
Exactly
@David Matthew Dispo sounds like a upgrade to me.
lufthansa is keeping they 747 until 2030
I miss they days when airports around the world used to be packed with 747s with various airline’s liveries. 😢😢😢
So like, 8 months ago?
Airports are quite bland now. White liveries, airbus or Boeing.
@@JustinLHopkins i like them but yes that's true. I remember when my home airport, SFO, was jam packed with 747s, United, British, Korean, Northwest, and many more. Now we have 787s, A330s, 777s, A350s now and while it's really cool to have those, the feel of a truly exciting airport is not there.
Yes I remember when almost every airline in the world had a 747. Those were the days
ATL would like to sorta differ
As a mechanic, I worked on the B747 for almost 40 years. Put into retirement like me. The world moves on. So Sad.
Don't be sad that it stopped, be happy that it existed
@@cupofmozzarella I FLEW THE 747 FOUR TIMES IT WAS FUN AND AWESOME AT THE SAME TIME, ENJOYABLE.
mazdarati2 Yes, I will be happy that the B747 existed and all the amazing maintenance problems I have experienced. It was a great feeling when there was a problem and I fixed it, then watch the flight takeoff. I just gave it a smile. I did that. There was a lot of those. :-). Good memories.
@@oldmech619 i helped build several hundred of the -400's. she will be missed.
mech here too 747s putting me to work! now if only we can rid those 767-200
My favorite thing about the 747 is, the hump, the code name "Jumbo Jet" and most importantly, its long life name, "The Queen of the skies".
Still the whale to me!!!
The iconic hump of the B747 makes it the most special aircraft among all
There will never be another Queen like the 747.
Is that EmpLemon?
Sure there will.
Why, just look at Queen Anderson Cooper!!
There’s the a340, a380, and the 777 too.
Yeahh.... Will surely miss it....
@@risingmoon893 A380 is like a cow dont mention it
Many 747's Are Being Retired Worldwide, Looks Very Sad. Covid - 19 Damaged The Aviation Industry Severely. The Queen Will Be Always Remembered. Thank You For Everything Queen !
One is shorter
One is longer
One was successful
One was not
One has a different engine
One has a different different engine
One is called 747-400
One is called 747-8
They’re both frieghters
And they’re awesome airplanes
Hope you liked my horrible haiku!
-TheRealHax
This is pretty good for something made in a few minutes. Airbus, Boeing, Embraer, Comac, bombardier and all other fans are saddened by the discounting of the 747 program. The only people who aren’t are environmentalists!
747-8 wasn't successful but it was there to act like a buffer for the A380. But cargo airlines did like the 748 though so in a way, its kinda successful
@bayspotter I know this has nothin g to do with the subject but why don’t you upload another video?
Nice poem but the -400 is quite long. Though I understand you said short for the sake of syllable
The 747-400 is shorter than the 747-8 boiiiiiii
Just an FYI, the "jagged edges on the engine cowling" are called chevrons, used primarily for noise dampening. Enjoyed the vid as always. 😉👍👍
Would that design work on car exhaust ?
@@qeuickshots ; In your travels, stop at a Chevron gas station and ask the attendant.
@@qeuickshots im no expert but in cars you mostly hear the combustion sound whereas in turbofans combustion is rather quiet compared to the high velocity jet chevrons i think help mix the high velocity inner hot flue gases with the bypass flow decreasing velocity hence noise. In car exhausts velocity is not really high so chevrons wouldnt do much
The upper deck is my favorite part about this aircraft
Well..... What else could one like
What's on the upper deck. Used to be called sky loft. I think they have first class or business class there.
Sxlp Sxlp most likely first or business class
Me to it was my childhood dream to sit there.
It is the shape that made it so iconic and recognized.
My favourite thing about it was when it piggy-backed the space shuttle.
My favorite thing on both 747 is the upper deck
My favorite thing about this jet are the memories. When I was a young lad flying from the US to England to India, the 747 was the premier jet out there. It would stir up so much excitement in me as we would arrive to airport, drive through the international terminal, see all the jets from all the different countries. It would stir up my imagination as a child of what it would be like to fly to all those countries in what I perceived as an absolute beauty of a jet, the real queen of the skies. Till this day my love of this airplane has not dwindled
It's a very impressive-looking Jet and it was so very Innovative when it came out in the very early 70s there was nothing like it for somewhere around 20 years. It's also one of the safest jets ever built
the obvious deference is that one is called the 747-8 and one is called the 747-400.
both good aircraft
And their sounds are different
I’m from Hawaii and grew up on the island of O’ahu. There was a time when all you would see were 747’s coming in and out of HNL, along with DC-10’s and L-1011’s. The 767’s weren’t frequent here in HNL until about the late 1990’s. It’s sad to see the largest passenger jets flying here are the 767’s, 777’s and 787’s. Today, the only Queens we see were with Korean Air (pre-COVID) and the cargo carriers like UPS, Pacific Air Cargo and Atlas. My first time on a 747 was with Pan Am and Northwest Orient out of Honolulu and loved every single minute on those beauties. Aloha oe to the TRUE Queen of the Skies! You’re gonna be sorely missed. To the Boeing team of engineers who designed, built and worked on The Queen, hats off to you all for a remarkable job!!
She's so graceful in appearance and in flight. I can vaguely remember the upper deck being a lounge when I was really young. The spiral staircase is unique. The sound of her taking off.
my answer to the question asked at the end of the video: everything, i love everything about the 747, it’s such a beauty
747-8 is just beautiful in every way
End of an era 747-400 and 8i
Saddest news.
My favourite thing about the 747 is that it is big, wide, super spacious and comfortable. The -400 looks so beautiful and elegant. It also takes off and lands so gracefully and its engines produce pure music.
The 747-8 is longer and has a longer hump and those engines are dam thicc
Boeing 747 is always be THE QUEEN OF THE SKY.
The wing flex on the 747-400 is gorgeous, and also the fact that the engines moves so much in turbulences!
Everything about the plane is iconic, but for me personally it must be the upper deck. I was lucky enough to travel there in business class a few times when I was a kid, and it felt like a little cocoon away from the rest of the plane. It's a lot quiter as well with less people and further from the engines. Would love to fly in one again.
I have never flown the 747-8 but I want to. I have flown British Airways’s -400 though. I’ll miss the 747 once it’s gone from the skies :(
I need to get on one even if it means to fly to another country (like germany) just to get on one
The most majestic plane ever. Nothing is more capable yet beautiful
Simpleflying i am requesting for soo long to make a video on airline alliances like oneworld and star alliance. I would appreciate that as your vids always make me understand

@@LongHaulbySimpleFlying yeah I have subscribed as simpleflying and long haul are my favourite channel as an avgeek. Love you all and thanks for taking in account my concern. If you guys had a 1000 channels, I would subscribe all
My favorite thing on the 747 is the gear tilt! That makes her landings beautiful!
If you think the 747 ain't pretty, you ain't an av geek. Farewell the Queen of the Skies!
Facts but the Concorde is my favorite
I absolutely agree. The 747 will always be the one and only Queen of the Skies. At least the -400Fs and the -8s will continue to open for many more years yet.
If you think the 747 ain't pretty, you have serious eye problems
That’s strong words…. What do you say to a kid who’s growing up in the era of Dreamliner and XWBs?
Roses are red
I am quite mad
747 retired
And some airlines are glad >:(
Take that, virus >:)
if you were an airline you'll see why
@@Al-hb2wo Money, that all
My favorite things about the 747:
- The engine noise of 4 magnificent engines
- The iconic hump
- The stairs to the upperdeck
- The stability it has while taking off and landing
- The great comfort it has when in the air (less turbulence problems)
- The KLM 747-400M (mixed-combi config.) PH-BFT (City of Tokyo) when they're transporting animals (like horses) you can get the chance to see them!
I helped build the -400 starting back in -88. A few years later I worked modifications globally as a hands-on instructor. I appreciated the quality and durability of the aircraft as well as the amenities available due to its size. Some of the -400's were all passengers, some were combi, and some were freighters. The type rating covered all variants. The choice of 3 engine brands was nice for the customer. Of course, as with anything that outlives its usefulness, it needs to be retired or mothballed in favor of newer twin-engine aircraft.
Imagine a 747-8 with just two GE-90 or whatever is latest but huge. Mammoth of the skies 😎
GEnx* GE90 is on 777
Edit: I now understood what you said 2 weeks later lol
...... so a 777 with a hump?
I swear every video on this channel is interesting.
My favorite thing about the 747 is that it has been flying since 1969 and the A380 is being discontinued soon, by (2022?)!
This wonderful iconic queen of the skies took me to many parts of the world. Flying in a 747, you were cruising in style big time! I will miss her very much.
747 is simply most beautifull flying machine in the sky. it is so sad to know it is no more. so sad
747-8i's will being flying for awhile and production will last 2 years.
747s are beautiful. Everybody says so, so I guess it must be a fact. Back when business class just meant bigger seats and better food, the best seats in commercial aviation were on a 747's main deck around row 4 because from there you could see that the aircraft wasn't just a tube, it tapered, and the seats were sort of scattered around. It was relaxing. And most 747-4s had a distinctive buzz to the engines in takeoff power. It was one of my favorite sounds.
It’s simply beautiful and majestic.......
Qantas just retired their last 747. I remember when Qantas flew nothing but 747s. Sign of the times. Sad turn of events for such a beautiful, iconic airliner....
What's my favourite thing about the Queen of the skies? Everything.
What I don't like about almost all current Boeings are the serrated engine covers. But I love all 747s
The first 747 rolled off the line in the new, purpose-built plant in Everett while the roof had yet to be installed. The people were called The Incredibles. End of a major era. I wonder what they'll use the extra space for.
Only the KC-46 and smaller variants of the 787 are produced in the world's largest building at the moment.
Back around 2000 our shop (Auburn, Fabrication Division) was bused to Everett to see our parts in use on the 767-400ER. At that time we made main landing gear assemblies. It had Bugatti brakes.
Naturally, we strolled about the whole plant. I'll never forget the 747s. I thought I was walking under a mezzanine until I realized it was a wing. Good grief, that thing is HUGE. You could build an entire gas station under it. Hey, maybe Flying-J should buy surplus 747 wings, lol.
Ehhhh, the 767-2C(KC-46 and 767-300F, 747-8F, all 777's and 787-8/9 are in production with the 767 and 747 production rates not being effected.
747-8f will still be used by cargo airlines (Cargolux etc). So at least we will still keep seeing queen of skies
My favourite thing about the 747 is how painless a 9hr flight could be compared to the pain of a shorter flight on a smaller plane.
So happy I got to fly transatlantic by 747 the last four summers.
Would have never thought that when we flew into Manchetser from Orlando last July, that would be the last time I'd fly by 747 and the end of that era of planes was just months away from ending. The first 747 Virgin scrapped was the last plane we flew in. I was surprised by how much that saddened me ! RIP Tinkerbell ✈
the upper decks of the 747-8I and 747-8F look different. are they actually different or is it because the lack of windows messed with my head? and if they are different, any reason why?
I'm wondering the exact same thing. The freighters undoubtedly have a smaller upper deck, which doesn't make any sense. What are we getting wrong here?
Because there aren’t any passengers on board and the only use of the upper deck is to sleep and make food so yeah.
The -8f's top deck is significantly shorter. I read that it makes the lower deck slightly taller, which helps with cargo loading.
How?
@@aquatikat normally the fuselage is round, but in the lower deck, directly underneath the top deck, the ceiling is flat (so that it becomes the floor for the top). That's what I've heard atleast.
My career as an aircraft mechanic started in 1980 and mostly did maintenance on the -400. This is a true gem and sad to see her go. Even after 40 years around planes I still ask myself how can this beauty get of the ground. Not just how much cargo and passengers it carries but add on the thousands of gallons in fuel, and the weight of the plane itself. It's a true tank of armor and I always felt safe flying on it. I know we have the a 380 but can't comment on it as I have never had the chance to work on it. But I still take the 747-400 over any other plane.
The Boeng 747 is a marvel to watch, especially landing. It's just beautiful
The Queen shall not be replicated. We will miss you in the skies and on the runway. (Wipes tears 😭)
I love the intercontinental. Don't laugh, but my favorite thing about it are the two windows at the top of the staircase heading to the upperdeck.
I managed to fly on the 747-200, 400 and SP. No one experience stands out as my favorite. Collectively every time I flew on a 747 was magical. The 747 is one of the most beautiful airplanes ever built. I miss her already. I know I will never fly on one again.
The beauty of the jet, it’s legacy, and the fact it was in production for over 50 years. These jumbo jets fly over me all the time, they will never be forgotten, standing alongside their 707 cousins.
The longer body and the wing spand, that's what makes a 747 a majestic airplane is the biggest of it's kind.
Great decade of aviation is gonna end soon. Queen of skies.
i love the look of the Boeing 747 family my most favorite variant of the Boeing 747 family is the Boeing 747-8.
Best airplane I ever flew. Superbly engineered. Safest aircraft out there. However, I never flew the dash 8. Bill C. (UAL retired in 1999)
0:41, Same on the Boeing 767-400ER. I didn't realize the Boeing 767-400ER has no winglet and no light wing tip.
Despite the mushing romancing about the B747, the B787 and A350 with all of their variants are going to the mainstay of global passenger air travel and the B747 and A380 will be distance memories.
Heck, I didn’t even know there were two different models. Thought all 747s were just that. There is just something special about this airplane that I think can never be replaced.
I just love the 747-8 variant. I wish that ex-744 carriers would invest into the 748i, as much as the cargo carriers invest into the freighter variant (748F).
747 is iconic because how it impacted the air travel in the "golden days" of flying which was for me the 70s to 90s
747-400 is huge. 747-8 is a monster.
Even though the A380 is the biggest commercial plane, i still find the 747 very beautiful
Can't wait to see the new AF1 747-8. Such a beautiful aircraft in addition to the astounding color scheme of AF1 is gonna be amazing!
actually boeing 747-400 had to be shut down because of larger consumption of fuel. This aircraft had 15 fatal crashes
I see how it is. Boeing's narrowbody has had a glow-down(737MAX), but the widebody counterparts have had a glow-up(747-8 &777X).
My favourite thing about the 747 is the sound of the revers thrust jet blasts
I flew several times on several routes in a 747. But the very first time it was in the late 1970s, FRA to JFK, shortly after I graduated with MSc from the physics department, University of Warsaw, Poland. It was PanAm aircraft, and I even remember the exact date, Aug 28, 1979. I also remember watching the movie "Superman" above the clouds. That was my first trip to America; talk about exposure to western culture for a Polish boy! And now I am booked to fly later this year on a 747-8 for the first time. Can't wait!
Great Video! He’s an iconic bird no matter what model he is configured. Even tho I have like 12% chance of getting on one I still like it!
Oh and here is a meme:
Me: sees B747
Also me: *Happiness noises*
One more:
Me: Gets the chance to fly on a B747
Also me: I feel immortal. Because I got the chance for it
I love everything about the 747. The look, the sound, the speed. Its just so majestic.
No one has flown the 747-8i to SXM yet so the 747-400 has the coolest landing ever
Thanks for a good recap of both. I was hoping the 8 version would keep the 747 flying for at least ten more years. I wonder if the decision to update it is similar to that of Airbus working on the A340 instead of a single-aisle twin-engine that seemed to be more needed in the industry. Still, I'm sad to see that plane go. It was a good upgrade to the 747-400. On paper, it made a lot of sense.
Comfort, safety with quads, spacious, great and in many way best. Beats 380.
When you are seated in the nose section, you can feel the aircraft shaking in all directions, like a roller coaster of sorts, I used to love it.
I have had the immense pleasure of maintaining every variant of the 747 with the exception of the SP in my close to 30 years as an a&p mechanic from Pan am and TWA to Atlas air and Evergreen plus countless other operators. it is a joy to work on the technology from the classics to the -8 is phenomenal yet the similarities from a maintenance standpoint is why the Queen of the sky’s will always have a special place for mechanics like myself
Favourite thing =
concept of lowering operating costs, retraining costs and actual maintenance costs
By maintaining lesser models
For lower inventory costs of parts and storing parts...
The last 747 flight I took back in 2014 was in the upper deck at the front. It was pretty awesome. I would've never known that it would be my final 747 flight as there are only a handful of airlines with 747s and those won't be around for long...
My favorite part about the 747 is its iconic hump that it has
Boeing 747 is truly a royal aircraft, and true to its name, is called, "Queen of the Skies". I simply love its shape - its wings, engines/ turbofans, fuselage, even landing gear, and above all - the iconic hump! Why can't Boeing produce a twin-engine aircraft with a hump? Replicate the shape of Boeing 747. It will doing a great service to aircraft/ aviation lovers.
Favorite part about the 747 is how it really represents America's aircraft. The 4 engines and little hump at the front are also super cool. There will never be a quite like the 747.
I still love the 747-400s. Having flown many of them has been a treat.😀😀
By far, the most beautiful passenger jet ever made. Majestic creation.
What's not to like about the '47, it will never really be replaced.
First thing on my bucket list if I had ridiculous amounts of money, is to own my own private 747-8i
i like that the 747 looks like a narrow body from the front but is one of if not the widest passenger planes
Hello I really enjoy your videos here in Britain I wait until my evening time for you to release your next video. Thanks for all you've done. Are you American? My favourite 747 is the 747-400.
Hands down one of the most beautiful plane ever created.
Learned a lot, thanks.
There will still be hundreds of 747's flying, just mostly cargo operations. With 4 engines, they can carry a lot more weight than a similar 2-engine freighter, like over 100,000 pounds more.
Nice explain and thanks For the subtitle 👍:)
My last 747 flight was SEA-LHR with BA. I thought during Covid I'll never see the Queen again. Well, looks like I'm wrong! Flying YVR-FRA with LH in November!
To be honest, the 747's hump made it look like it came from a cartoon shows
747s fell out of favor with airlines but not with passengers. the 747 demise illustrates how airline market incentives keep costs, and fares, low and sacrifice comfort and customer satisfaction.
My favourite would be the steadiness of the flight and that for a long time was the most popular plane for long haul travel between continents.
The hump like the 707 antenna tail section to me it gives the a classic look
As an avgeek, I am sad to see airlines saying goodbye to the 747. Only Air China, Lufthansa and Korean Air operates this beauty now. Another aircraft that is retired already is the Avro. I have sat on an Avro once and it was awesome. For the 747, I prefer the 747-8 as it has a longer upper deck, which is what I like the most about the Queen of the skies. May she rest in peace.
Size, power, looks…I love the 747😃
It's my favorite aircraft for its indistinguible shape. I flew four times with B747 and it was an unforgettable event.
