PORTUGAL HAS RECORDED 61 CASES OF DENGUE FEVER, ALL IMPORTED
As of 9 June, Portugal had recorded 61 cases of dengue fever - 34 more than had been reported up to 31 March.
Data from the Directorate-General for Health (DGS) also indicate that all cases were imported and that there were no deaths associated with the disease detected in the country.
The death of a Portuguese person in Lisbon at the end of March was not taken into account because the patient “had been diagnosed abroad and subsequently travelled to Portugal for clinical care”, and is therefore not counted as a case in the country, clarifies the DGS.
This week, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) announced its concern about the latest data on mosquito-borne infections, such as dengue fever, Zika and West Nile virus.
The populations of the different mosquitoes that can transmit these diseases to humans, said the ECDC officials, are expanding in Europe, thanks to climate change, which, with warmer summers and milder winters, is helping them to take hold. In addition, the increase in cases in some parts of the world (such as the Americas), combined with an exponential increase in travel between these regions and the European continent, is also contributing to the increase in imported cases.
In this regard, the Olympic Games that will be held in Paris (France) in a few weeks are seen as a “significant risk of transmission”, they warned.
SELF-PROTECTION MEASURES
The ECDC states that, in order to try to contain transmission, it is essential that people take self-protection measures - going to a traveller's consultation before travelling to regions where mosquitoes are endemic, using insect repellent and wearing clothing that covers as much of the body as possible - and carrying out simple acts such as cleaning stagnant water (in containers, gardens or balconies, for example)
