There's also multiple Mods to convert the Stone into Gravel, & Gravel into Ores, so you don't need to worry about the Stone being useless.
I use it for my Solar System Minimalist Space Start.
The one I use is pretty well balanced, as it converts the Stone into Gravel into Ore, which then needs to be smelted, and the return is a percentage of the Stone used, which really makes the Efficiency Upgrades for the Refineries very important.

  • @wilsonw13

    Couple of suggestions:
1 - You should setup one of these drills for the ice patch.
2 - if you don't care for the stone, just have an ejector remove it all, like you did on your mining ship earlier.
3 - I would stick a wind turbine and a refinery on the mining platform, might as well make it do all the work!
4 - You're awesome and keep up the great entertainment!

Add a refinery for refining the stones. Refineries produce more ingots per stone than survival kit, even without yield module, and do so VERY quickly. I made a spaceship with 11 drills and refineries that can mine 1.000.000 iron ingot in minutes by just mining stone.

Hey Kanajashi, I've done a bit of testing with the new blocks and thought I'd share. Hydrogen Engines are built in an on state with out hydrogen in its internal tank. Cycling the engine off then back on fills the tank and starts the engine. Power cycling the entire grid basically does the same thing with more risk of power loss.
(Engine side note) A engine left running after a battery(s) reaches a full charge state (with out load) will continue to run, but stops using hydrogen. Only when a draw is placed on the grid it slowly starts using fuel.
Also, the survival kit, basic refinery and refinery all process stone. Each step up from the survival kit processes stone more effectively and quicker than the last.
Looking good Sir! Looking forward to seeing more of your adventures!

What if you used a sensor to detect when the drills are swinging past on each revolution and go down a bit each time. You could probably get it to go as fast as it can without forcing the drills into the ground that way.

    • @001sharpshot
      @001sharpshot 2 роки тому

But can you explain how to do this tho

    • @kyis1256
      @kyis1256 2 роки тому +3

@@001sharpshot Put a sensor on the main column facing the rotor, detect subgrids only, set a detection zone a block wide and far enough in front of the sensor to clip the drills when they swing by, increase bottom distance as deep as you'd want the drills to go relative to the sensor. (You can change the sensor position, it's the clipping that matters, just keep the sensor on a different grid than the rotating subgrid and adjust the zone accordingly.)
There are multiple ways from there, either you set as sensor action a timerblock that increases max piston distance on each pass with a fixed extend velocity, or alternatively set a fixed speed on the pistons then make the sensor trigger a timerblock to power the pistons and trigger another timerblock to turn them off, tweaking the second one's delay + piston velocity to go down as much as possible without bashing the drills in the ground. The first method is very precise and predictable but you get in trouble with too many pistons and the last needs more tweaking but you can adjust for a lot more pistons. (You'd want other QOL timers as well, to retract and stop, or return to a known initial state for example, so it's easy to control from a button panel)
One could also use this to make a reciprocating motion instead of a circular one, kinda like a racking motion, you'd be digging a rectangle instead of a circle.
A bit late but I hope it helps ^^

One of the big problems I encountered with connected grids through connectors is when you click "Y" to cut the power, it will cut the power on all connected grids and therefore disconnect them all... in space they wont' move but when you put the power back with "Y" it won't restard all the disconnected grid of course, so you'll have to restart them one by one...
For the hydrogen engine you just have to toggle the power of the hydrogen engine block and it will start, you don"t need to toggle the power of the whole grid.

Your crazy idea at 41:32 inspired me to make my mining platform mobile. It works great on lakes. I haven't tried it over land yet. I have a piston system that extends 100 meters and I left on overnight with a refinery running too. Today I moved it to a cobalt/gold deposit. Thanks for the suggestion!

Whats the point of putting TWO hydrogen engines on a hydrogen thrusters ship with 2 batteries? I mean most of my ships use atmospheric thrusters, which use power... and I don't even put reactors, solar panels or hydrogen engines on them... They are just battery powered, and I recharge the batteries when I plug into the base. These two engines are just excess weight, and will even burn through your fuel ressource just to keep 3 drills powered?!?!

I think you would appreciate this:
    steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1644951278
It's basically what you built, but instead of pistons it uses an "auto extender system", which automatically builds a pipe system as it drills down.
Basically, it's an automated mining system :)
Also, pro tip, use math to calculate the speed your piston can move down continuously as it spins, then you don't need to manually change it all the time. I have a quick starter base which does this, it however requires manually extending the drill head every like 10-15 minutes or so:

You should seriously get in the habit of turning off your hydrogen thrusters when you're not using your ships, even if they are in a state of idleness they burn through hydrogen like a dehydrated marathon runner does with water after crossing the finishing line.
Also landing platforms may be a good idea if you're worried about cycling power and destroying it ships in the process.

The disconnection issue is precisely why the base connectors should be for loading and unloading only. For charging batteries go with a separate charging dock completely isolated from the base power-wise. Connectors don't need to be connected to conveyors to transmit power. Build a tower 10 blocks high (really only need 8, but 10 will give you a buffer), build out about 8 - 10 blocks in all four directions at the top, pop a wind turbine on the end of each extension, and set up your connectors around the base.
By using wind turbines you have a steady source of power without having to divert any of it to batteries and by keeping it isolated you don't have to worry about your ships crashing if for whatever reason your base loses power. Or you could put hydrogen engines and oxygen generators on your otherwise battery powered vehicles that are responsible for charging the batteries when idle (i.e. keep it off when flying and turn it on when parked and the batteries are set to recharge) and just park on the ground or in a hangar using standard landing gears.

I see these rigs and think well that works but I wan't more then stone, seems every deposit I find is like 40m down from the surface where clang "assists" with piston operation when extending that many of them. For something like nickel well you get that from stone as well as iron and silicon so why try for the deposit?

I'm thinking it cannot be too much hassle to make a script with a lookup table for the components of different things and have a few button panels for requesting the components directly into a welder ship, instead of having to transfer manually all the time. Sortof like how you do with Easy Inventory, but for ships instead.

-To extend the pistons a little bit at a time from the seat, First turn the piston block off, then tell it to fully extend, then add the piston (or group of pistons) to the action bar with on/off option. This will allow you to move the piston a little it at a time by toggling it on and off. Pistons still transfer ore and power when they are 'off'. You can do the same thing with the rotor.
-If you want to get the stone out of the container, add a sorting block, then a connector. Tell the sorter to whitelist only stone. For the sorter turn 'drain all' ON , and for the connector turn 'collect all' to ON and 'eject' ON

You should convayer the drill to your base

That mining rig will cost you a fortune in PCU on a MP server. I've got a rig that can do 3x the width with 5 Drills. Trick is to get clever with rotors and have the drill bore out horizontally.

How do you you switch from the big block to small block ( or big thruster to small thruster) on a ship/base because it's very annoying sticking to one or another

Satisfying rig to watch! I had a similar one that was a skyward facing rotor that had a T shape on top of it, and had drills hanging off each side of the T. So I mined a big donut around the rotor base essentially xD

I tried making a mobile version of your mining rig, but i must have did something wrong since it is almost impossible to steer the damn thing. It goes back and forth tho :))

one thing you can do add a wind turbine and basic refinary to your mining rig so that it refines the stone into iron, silicon, and nickle ingots while you are away so that you have iron, silicon and nickle ready for you to take and throw out the unneeded excess gravel.

It's funny how excited you get over nickel, cause in later videos you just shrug and say I have plenty of that back at base.😆

hey mate, nice drilling rig...but automatic is somthing else
you could use some timerblocks for the pistons and some math to calculate the exact time

What kind of flight time do you get off of 2 engines and a tank on that utility ship??
That sounds to me like it'd fall down in five minutes.

why dont u just disconnect the ships so they float on their own power for a few min and then turn all off/on ? kinda goes beyond me why thats such a huge issue for u?

really like the idea of a mobile version, might make one that looks like one of those container ship cranes, where the drill arm is in the center of a large square frame

if you put a refinery on the drill rig before the second cargo then you can use the second container to store the refined ores ... and the first to hold the raw stuff ... also you can add a solar array to the top of the rig to keep it powered nice and long ...

are you able to put the main support stem of the drill on a rotor? That way you can swivel the entire arm 45 degrees or whatever and then do another huge circle of mining?

Could you put another rotator attached to the top of the arm and rotate the whole rig? and/Or even add wheels to the base and a counter weight to make the whole thing mobile?
