Lupe Takes The Cake

Lupe Fiasco continues his rollout for Samurai with Cake. Seeing as Samurai follows the story of Amy Winehouse's battle rap career, this song fits in perfectly! This latest release definitely has set expectations for the project high, but luckily we don't have to wait much longer

"Authoring is August, Wordplay is December"
it's a play on "hot/cold", as in when you say someone is good, you either say they're "fire" or they're "cold". He's saying he's both, i.e.
"That mean my pen is in cinders (August) and my delivery shivers (December)"
And then the "shiver" scheme just continues for a few bars with all the ship and icicle imagery, i.e. he's so cold icicles from out of the tip of his pen ("Icicles drip from the tip of my scriptures") and people on boats crash into them

Not quite, the album will have elements of a "what if" alternate history based around what it would be like if Amy was a battle rapper. Cake is a song that celebrates Amy's first win as a battle rapper while also Lupe celebrating his own career. This is reinforced in the second verse when he discusses the "dual identity" ( him and Amy) and he also mentions "who is he speaking about" and refers to a he (Lupe)and she (Amy).

Necropolis (city of the dead) is related to when he references multiple dead people from Amy, Tupac (Apocalypse), Biggie (Christopher Wallace), and Janice Joplin.
