  • THE ADVANTAGE OF THESE PLATES IS THE EXTENDED WEAR OF THE DIAMOND. WHILE THEY WONT LAST FOREVER, THEY ARE STILL GOING STRONG IN MY SHOP. I DONT THINK ROTATING IS IMPORTANT IN THIS CASE. I START 1K AND ONLY USE THE 300 IF THE CHISEL IS BADLY OUT. NORMALLY I START ON 1K, 6K FINISH WITH 16K. I AM SUGGESTING THE INITIAL PHASE WOULD BEST BE DONE ON THE 1K DIAMOND, NO NEED TO STOP AND FLATTEN, SINCE THIS IS THE PROBLEMATIC PHASE FOR MOST FOLKS, THESE STONES COULD BE A BIG HELP.

    Hi Rob, You are too young to be you, I mean you are such a master craft-man.
    You explain things better than a lot of people. Thanks for all what you do.

    Rob, I took you class on Hand planes and sharpening. I learned more in that class than what I have been attempting to learn on my own for the past 3 decades. I have actually sharpened my old chisels to a better than decent edge for the first time. I enjoyed you class and look forward to attending your 5 day workshop in the near future.
    Thank you

    I thought I was preparing my chisels before I saw this video. Using this method makes even the $5 pack I have completely different. I can't wait to get some real chisels.

      Honestly they won't perform wildly better. Theyll last longer for sure, theyll no doubt feel better, and probably look a lot nicer. But in my experience a sharp chisel is a sharp chisel as long as the steel is half way decent and the handles don't weigh double the blade.
      P.S. I've found that I only really use the handle for force application (pushing while pairing, hitting while mortising) otherwise I hold it more or less in the middle of the steel/wherever I need to make my fingers into a depth stop. So don't get super hung up on handles. Unless you WANT to, that is ;)

    I’m amazed at all the different techniques that are around for sharpening. This system seems like a very good one and is very reasonable, if I could indeed get many years of use out of it (about £100 in the UK, which is a little under $130 US).
    I have actually bought a 1000/6000 grit waterstone too, but I’m really thinking this is the way to go to get the initial flattening of the chisel backs, etc.
    I’m very new to woodworking and I’m bowled over with the amount of kit needed to prolong the life of tools, plus the varying levels of information regarding it.
    And old video, but a very helpful one. Thanks, Rob.

    Wait! You're saying I shouldn't be sharpening my chisels on my bench grinder? But the sparks are so pretty and the steel turns a very nice shade of blue!
    Seriously though you have made me decide to take up wood working.

    I bought the diamond, but I filled the pouch with $100 bills and went hunting. No way to get deer like handing out money to ranchers. Now I am back and using the diamond again on chisels. Glad I watched this video.

    Why not knock back the majority of it on the 300 side, then swap to 1000 for the final cut?

    Great advice Rob,is it necessary to rotate the diamond surface to get an even wear on the diamond.My son is looking to buy diamond sharpening but they were not as thick and lots of different grades, so I think we need to have a re think as they may not be as flat as those you have.He already has some shapston stones to finnish with,I noticed you went from 300 to 1000 is that your recommended grades ?

    Murderous grape crushers, just terrible. Thanks for the video. You have peaked my curiosity, are you using the same type, (manufacturer and grit)? or have your change since 2011, Many thanks for the video (I've spent a small fortune on Washitas, Arks, and Japanese water stones, some for this, and some for that, But I really need a go-to piece like the one you have demonstrated

  • @przybyla420

    If the back is convex, I would forget the stones if you have a belt grinder, particularly a stationary one. Use the wheel itself with 180 or 220 grit belt, not the flat top; first sharpie the area you want to touch so you can easily see where you’ve been (the center, and you MUST not wander from it or you undo the “grounding” you have done). Light pressure, let the grit do the work. First attack the very top of the hill, then gradually, once it’s lowered, wander out from there to roughly flatten or slightly dish. Then go to coarse stone.

  • @kingmalt
    @kingmalt 7 років тому +2

    Hi Rob, nice video! I'm interested to know what you make of Japanese chisels, in particular the hollows on the base?

    • @przybyla420
      @przybyla420 4 роки тому

      They don’t make any difference. It’s easier to flatten the back, that’s it. Plane irons are tapped out with a hammer on an anvil once they’re ground down enough to get into the hollow. I don’t think chisels are though, not sure what the idea is. It would take awhile to go that far. The Japanese probably started doing it that way because they like their tool steel so hard that on a large chisel they take forever to grind the back flat by hand, which you can’t do on a large foot powered grinding wheel. If you find an antique chisel, finely made hollows are a mark of quality.

    this stone looks nearly identical to the double sided plate from chef knives to go, which is 1/4 the price or better
    with the exception that this one is slightly wider and has the diamond pattern on only one side.
    I am wondering if they are from the same manufacturer but steeply marked up by trend.
    have you tried the atoma plates? ive heard good things about them but am a little wary of the way they are put together (a thin diamond surface stuck to an aluminum plate with double sided tape) i bought some replacement plates and intend to cut up some precision aluminum plate to spray mount them to, hoping that will make them flatter.
    good video, its verry critical but often frustrating to flatten chisel backs accurately, i think diamond plates are the best option for it.

      Diamond stones don't need to be flatened. Water stones (like his 16K finishing stone) need to because they wear a lot.

    #1000 water stone can be your finisher hell 600 can be just as fine. but using this to remove metal or flatten a chisel is your mistake. no wonder they did not stay flat long. they make 100 200 even lower that work in a tenth the time to flatter or make a bevel. 1000 will take... well 11 minutes at least

    What do you think of mortising chisels which make the sides of the chisel tilt in making the top of the chisel thinner?

    • @RobCosmanWoodworking
      @RobCosmanWoodworking  4 роки тому

      Dickie Wilson don’t like them at all. The square sides of a mortise chisel aid in creating a smooth-walled mortise that will provide excellent glueing contact. That’s why I recommend four squared-sided mortise chisels.
