“You start at the end. You start with emptiness. You start with nothing. You start with the void… I lost my mother when I was 14. I learned so much from her vanishing. I wish it had never happened. I wish that I had been older. But as a young teenager staring hard into that void, this is where a certain life-force gathered pace in me. Where a certain defiance began. To defy the odds. To defy people’s expectation. To defy death itself. To rob it of it’s power over me or anyone else…
Somewhere along the way I discovered joy as an act of defiance. That defiance was the essence of romance.
The album has two love songs with pungent dark clouds crouching over perpetual skies. Beautiful. But flammable.
I won’t dwell in it or on it. I don’t want to name it. I feel fantastic now, stronger than ever.
I had to pull down the blinds on the world. Should I have the background and foreground noises? Turn down the volume of my crowded mind to hear that still soft voice.
I’ve always known that joy can’t be contrived. It’s a wellspring of a life being lived and loved. I went looking for the joy that cannot be manufactured.
We give birth to these songs, but it’s our audience that give life and meaning to them. ” - BONO

    “You start at the end.
    You start with emptiness.
    You start with nothing.
    You start with the void.”
Maybe it was the Dalái Lama who said: ‘Any meditation on life has to start with one death’.
It sounds a little bleak, but not to me.
I lost my mother when I was fourteen. I learned so much from her vanishing.
I wish that it never happened. I wish that I had been older, but as a young teenager, staring hard into that void, this is where a certain life-force gathered pace in me, where a certain defiance began, to defy the odds, to defy people’s expectation, to defy death itself, to rub it of its power over me or anyone else. Yeah, I was that grandiose even then. Somewhere along the way I discovered joy as an act of defiance, and that defiance was the essence of romance.
The band has spent many summers in the South of France. It’s a place that saved us from ourselves, reintroduced us to the love of our lives, to our families, to our music… Some Sun teases our irishness that we weren’t just white or pink. For the past few summers there’s been a certain foreboding on what used to be such a pleasant horizon. Whether or not we could see, we could feel it.
War in Syria was just across the water, and all it’s lost, we find now what remains.
“I’ve been thinking about the West Coast,
not the one that everyone knows”
    [Summer of love - U2]
West Coast is Syria, in the same Mediterranean Sea where we watch nurses and teachers and people who looked a lot like us, tying themselves to almost nothing, to a hope, a dream of another shore. Human wreckage washing up on Turkey or Italy or who knows where.
So the album has two love songs with pungent dark clouds crouching over perpetual skies. Beautiful, but flammable.
Last winter, I was on the receiving end of a shock to the system myself, a shock that left me cleaning onto my own life like a raft. Now lots of us have a brush with mortality at some stage. It’s an interesting experience. I felt like I was being arrested, facing a wall, with my hands above my head, the Force screaming at me “Don’t move!”. I won’t dwell in it or on it. I don’t wanna name it. I feel fantastic now, stronger than ever.
These songs have potence behind them and it would feel dishonest not to admit the turbulence I was feeling at the time of writing. I had to pull down the blinds on the world.
Should I have the background and the foreground noises? Interference. Turn down the volume of my crowded mind to hear that still soft voice that promises the peace, that passes all understanding, that relationship that you can have with God or whatever you want to call that. It’s a relationship that yields only to truthfulness.
I’ve always known that joy can’t be contrived, that it’s a wellspring of a life being lived and being loved. I went looking for the joy that cannot be manufactured. Happiness is so much easier to counterfeit, isn’t it? Pill, promise, a horse given 10 to 1, a beautiful face to figure out, a night on the town, a belly laughing at great meets.
Joy is a different thing. The great music is joy, the Beatles, Mozart, Beethoven, Aretha, the Ramones. Joy even erupts out of rage, doesn’t it?
‘Anger is an energy’, sang Johnny Lydon in the ’80, when the U2 were still finding themselves.
Before starting to write these Songs of Experience, I decided to take up the challenge.
“If you really want to get where the writing lives, write as if you are dead.”
If for prioritize you might have to say, if you think these may be your last phrases. I’d like people to listen to these songs, to know that I’d love them to get approached with the sense that I might not be around to hear them on the radio or on the stream of things. I thought a lot about not being around so I made this sound love letters, letters to people, to places.
American Soul, that’s a letter to America, country still inventing and reinventing
itself, that has been a muse for this band since we first toured in the ’80. But as we recorded these twelve songs, we felt the idea of America was being challenged, maybe even twisted, in nearly problematic ways. Raise of the old, right, it’s no surprise, it’s happening all over the world. But to see in the U.S., to see the Ku Klux Klan marching the streets of Charlottesville with that silly costume and the pointy hats. That was a new level of absurdity and danger. Why did they feel so bold? Talking of banning of muslim from America for fear of a terrorist threat, would be like the British in the ’70 and ’80 banning all Irish from the UK for fear one of us could be in the IRA. Of course we could, but you can’t ban air because it carries a virus.
The Showman, is a love letter to anyone who falls for the bluster of a performer too much / too little confidence. We give birth to these songs, but it’s our audience that give life
and meaning to them. The relationship with performers and audience in U2 is the crazy romance. There’s a deal (in place?). We don’t have to worry about where our kids go to school or how to afford the family holiday, but in return, our audience don’t have to worry that the band is not going to give everything they’ve got.
This set of song costs us more than we were expecting. Because we pushed our songs into shape, the more we were pushing each other out of shape. I think we survived.
The questions I could’t get out of my head was ‘Could I write Aly a song, a love song, a song of exhortation, without inducing the project of vomit, that is sentimentality. Mmmh, maybe humility, if I could remember what that was with help.’ If it’s anywhere interesting, writing will always uncover the writer. I wanted to dive naked into these Songs of Experience, not just skinny diving with the ones I love, I wanted my skin off. I wanted to dive out between my Innocence and Experience, and at the far ending of Experience, through Wisdom. I’d like to believe we can recover innocence.
The Blackout, it’s a letter to the moment we are in, where both personal and political apocalypse combine, not just the rock, B.M.I. Body Mass Index slothered by time, but the dinosaur democracy facing the extinction. Sounds like melodrama. Well, that’s what we want from the opera, isn’t it? Big melodies, big emotions, don’t think it’s far fetched. Democracy, after all, is a new blipping history, it’s an aspiration seed by bloody revolutions, it’s a bloody messy business.”
    Bono singing:
“When the lights go out, uh, when the lights go out, when the lights go out. When the light go out throw yourself about in the darkness where we learn to see. When the lights go out, don’t you ever doubt the light that we can really be” [The blackout - U2

Old Eclectic Soul you make me remember when I was 13 and they came to my country, I cried because I was too young so I couldnt travel to see the show. Today Im 24 I saw 2 shows, in the last one I was close to bono and the edge, they looked to my eyes and I touched the sky for the first time. This will be my my favourite band forever. Oh, we got "electric" in our nicknames :)

    • @DumbBlondeJewels
      @DumbBlondeJewels 6 років тому +1

its electric puppet -Thank you for taking the time to respond! I saw my 2 other long time vocal, artistic, political and moral role models this year (Lady Gaga and actress Idina Menzel ) and the 2 final concerts on my bucket list are U2 and Elton John and I have full faith in getting the opportunity to see them both. Each concert is a new emotional revelation and I love and appreciate the depth of music too much to stop seeking out the opportunities to witness my favorite artists first hand. It's exhilarating!
(Also, my nickname is Eclectic Soul, it's okay that you misread it-I don't want to explain it to you though because you're older than me and I feel like that would be rude on my part-I sincerely appreciate your response! Thank you so much.)

Old Eclectic Soul you're welcome! You're right, every show is a new opportunity to feel alive and get faith in ourselves. I never thought I would be so near to my favourite band. I'm so glad for your response too. Peace! Oooooh it's eclectic! Sorry haha !

I totally loved Bono lending his voice to his writing. It always provides so much more context. 😊💜 I love this band so much and I CANNOT wait to hear these songs live!! #Bono has outdone himself on the lyrics on this album. He has achieved what he set out to do and I’m eternally grateful that he *is* here with us, to hear these songs play on the radio. Thank you @u2.
