Seger was never popular outside of the US but this IS my coming of age song. Spent the night in a cold car sleeping out for tickets to see Seger on tour to promote this album in 1977. A desire to play this song was the reason I bought my first guitar. Thank you for doing this video.
I saw Bob Seger in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada on Aug. 14, 1975 when he opened for Bachman Turner Overdrive. I had never heard of him, but what an introduction! The crowd went crazy for him. I bought my first guitar in 1975 and just this week donated it to a school kids music charity started by Bob Egan of Blue Rodeo. Did you learn this song?
@@1taylorgibson Yes, I started on the strum pattern long before I could play an F. In '77 a psychedelic spot light (very high tech for the time) lite up Alto Reid who had climbed to the top of a large stack of amps for his sax solo on turn the page. The crowd went crazy. One of the best shows I've seen. Nice to hear about your first guitar. I may do something similar with my first guitar.
Specifically mentioning and working through the "talk" signing @6:35 is key and very helpful that Justin addresses it. True. by not - singing - on - the - beat is both easier AND harder esp for beginners. Nice touch
Thanks for sharing this Justin - LOVE Bob Seger! This song not only spoke to me, it defined me. Even had "Night Moves" pinstriped on the back of my dark blue 65 GTO. (You know, back in the days when cruising was still a thing. lol)
Thank you Justin. Wow this is a blast from my past. I listened to so much Bob Seger when I was younger. Hoping maybe you’ll do a lesson on “against the wind” which is pretty classic Bob Seger. I think you’re probably the only one on UA-cam to cover this song! Thank you
I'm English and have been a fan of Bob Seger since the 70's when I first heard "Mainstreet" with The Silver Bullet Band, bought the album been a fan since.
Thanks for breaking down that double bridge part! This is Seger's best tune, and super fun to play along with. Its a nice crowd pleaser to play while sitting around a campfire too.
A lot of important concepts in this song, you of course dug in so various levels of players get something to challenge and improve. As old beginner (71 now) I’m developing strumming muscles. It is interesting to me , a retired chiropractor, the muscle memory and neurological tracks are slow to lay down but when there it’s like stone. I want to encourage the older and younger players to stay with it. I have started and stopped playing more than once. I also play bass and find the fat strings really make one have strong fingers and switching back and forth is interesting to say the least. Great as always Justin.
Another great lesson Justin, you make your lessons so understandable & your style of teaching is so nice and relaxed. Many years ago I started lessons with a famous guitarist who had done a lot of session work with some of the biggest bands of the 60s & 70s , an ego maniac who made you fully aware that you would never be as great as he was & what an honour it was that he was waisting his time even talking to us , hence never really learnt until now , thank god for UA-cam & yourself . PEACE and LOVE to everyone.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! This is the song my instructor is teaching me. Maybe one of the coolest 😎 songs ever written. I am so excited to learn this song.
Great lesson Justin I think it's so great you focus on the importance of the groove as 90 percent of guitar pretty much is locking in the rhythm. I also appreciate you doing the vocal as this gives us context over the chord changes even if we start off slowly. Much appreciated 🙏 as always mate 👍
That guitar has a beautiful tone Justin. Great lesson dude with funky vibe, I can understand why it's addictive. I agree, I prefer the no pick, click stroke too, you're right it sounds warmer and fits more with the groove of the song. Really enjoyed this lesson, one to practice for sure, thank you Justin.😎👍❤
Love this Justin. Was looking for a good lesson on this song and you nailed it. You are also correct in stating that song just makes you happy. playing the groove.
Great video! Very well explained, learned in minutes. I just got home from work and this lesson was randomly open. I hope I didn't wake my family up though 💪
First time comment on one of your videos Justin, although I've been watching for many a year. Great lesson as usual but I really wanted to compliment you on the vocals at the beginning. I know it hasn't been your most favourite part of performing, but your confidence has improved 100 fold recently. Thanks for providing these videos...!
only a very small percentage of male singers can sing bob seger songs in normal key hitting all the highs, unique voice, it makes sense he became known for it.
The cheat that some people teach for the chorus is not to go to the quick D chord that is sandwiched in between the Em and the C chords. It’s a quick shift and tends not to sound smooth. You can just uncover the D string of the Em or C chord for a quick up/down strum as you transition. It sounds almost the same at speed and is smoother. This was one of the biggest hits of the mid 70’s. Anyone in their mid 50’s or older heard it a million times.
"The transition between those chords, very very common; very nice moves." Very "nice moves," eh? I see what you did there ;) LMFAO. You rule, Justin. Thank you so much, as always...
I'm a big fan of ur tutorials and I always use them I'm not great at guitar but I'm getting there slowly 😪 could u do an accoustic guitar tutorial/cover of Crystallised be the XX

This arrangement misses the mark of the original somehow. Maybe it’s the syncopation of the vocal over top of the strumming? I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I much prefer the original. Regardless, you’re a legend, Justin.
I'm a long time Justin Sandercoe subscriber, and usually his attention to detail is amazing (check out his in depth video on Sultans of Swing to see what I mean), but I feel like he dropped the ball a bit on this one. For me what makes the original recording so special is how the open g-string is constantly ringing out like a bell during the verse, but in this lesson Justin replaces it with the percussive hit. He also forgot to mention the Cmaj7 at the end of the chorus that brings the verse back which is a pretty big detail. Anyway, he did mention that he is not very familiar with the song, and it says "easy" in the video title, so maybe he simplified the song a bit for beginners. 🤷♂
appreciate the effort justin. and i love ya brother. but as a 60 year old American who grew up with this song,,,,, Nah Dog! Not good! Still love all you do to help people like me with learning guitar. Appreciate you! But i must be honest.
Hey man love ur videos always find them really helpful, I was wondering if you’d ever listened to anus of Uranus by Klaatu it’s got some really cool riffs in it but I can’t figure any of it out, it’d be really awesome if you could check it out and see what u think, chrz 👍
I'm a big Justin fan and have been for a long, long time, but I must agree - too fast and not really catching that very distinctive rhythm (with what J usually describes as the 'push'). Very unusual for Justin who generally nails these things very well indeed - like his great Cure lesson on 'Friday I'm in Love' and his very recent Stones' cover of 'Sweet Virginia' which was as good as it gets. Thanks heaps Justin.
Justin your guitar playing and teaching is top draw…unfortunately your singing is not so 😂😂..it just detracts from what you teach so well…if you insist on vocals in the lesson then maybe get a singer in but it’s just not necessary 🤷🏻♂️

I grew up on the South Coast in NSW Australia and this song was always playing as we cruised down the main street. Very popular here.

This IS my coming of age song. It was blasting from my Dodge van (on my Craig 8-track Power Play)

I was desperately waiting for you to do a lesson on this song. It's my all time fav :')
Love you, Justin!

I'm English and have been a fan of Bob Seger since the 70's when I first heard "Mainstreet" with The Silver Bullet Band, bought the album been a fan since.
Always loved the groove of this song. Had to pick up the guitar! Thanks!

Justin is the best when teaching rhythm.

That's a great song. Reminds me of my teem years too.
Awesome thanks 🙏❤
Bro...nice vocal on that one! BRAVO👏👏👏 . Your recent video about singing and playing was inspiring...i really needed to hear it at the time.
1 of Bob's best! \m/
Brilliant thanks Justine
Awesome lesson justin 👏
Epic !! thanks for this one
My pleasure! :)
Thanks!
Thanks for the thanks 😊
Very nice, I’m a fan. This one needs the outro, though, which is seldom included in lessons: Em, Bm Am, C, G.
Oops, of course. I’ll correct that! Edit: done.
"The transition between those chords, very very common; very nice moves." Very "nice moves," eh? I see what you did there ;) LMFAO. You rule, Justin. Thank you so much, as always...
Mate your singing is some much nicer,,, good work. ❤
Did you throw a pinch of reverb on the vocals? Maybe Mr. Seger's register just suits you but it sounds fantastic!
I'm a big fan of ur tutorials and I always use them I'm not great at guitar but I'm getting there slowly 😪 could u do an accoustic guitar tutorial/cover of Crystallised be the XX
Do a Bob Dylan tutorial
Don't
Why?!!!
Already done!😂
Do you know the magic word „please“?
Love this song, thanks for this one! Would also love to see you do a video on Tributary by Julian Lage some day.
classic
Nice reverb
You got reminiscing about those warm summer nights with a gentle breeze!🤔
Yeah he got me reminiscing about me and your mom
*This song was on family guy many years ago*

1:56 bro somebody please tell me how I hit those silent notes I’m so confused
Justin. Why does everyone use a Capo 1, but I don't see Bob Seger using one? Mike from North Pole AK
Bob seger recorded it higher, but later on couldn’t sing that high. If you want to play along with live concerts, you wont need the capo.
That F to rock G transition feels difficult for these older hands -> keep practicing

One of my all time favourite songs from my favourite all time artist but this is very disappointing, it's played too fast and lacks the feel of Seger.
Well, get your box tuned up and show us how it's done?
I'm a big Justin fan and have been for a long, long time, but I must agree - too fast and not really catching that very distinctive rhythm (with what J usually describes as the 'push'). Good song. But one bit of constructive criticism . You are playing this a tad too fast for tempo
Hey bro wow what a great beat and production, this goes hard !!!🔥 very good job 🙌 please check my last beat , and tell me what do you think my work.
Its very hard to focus on what you’re doing when you talk constantly 😅
One too many strums here with the double strum at the end
Wrong
Your voice is funny
Way to fast but not terrible
Can't take you seriously that silly hat
Justin your guitar playing and teaching is top draw…unfortunately your singing is not so 😂😂..it just detracts from what you teach so well…if you insist on vocals in the lesson then maybe get a singer in but it’s just not necessary 🤷🏻♂️
Zip it shitter
his singing is better than most
