  • We're having a really mild winter so the swap meet was open and someone held a garage sale. Some really great bargains this week. If you know anything about them please leave a comment.

    Malco is a tool company that sells to the mechanical trades. That's a sheet metal hammer or tinners hammer for sheet metal work. I have that same one and I believe the real manufacturer is Eswing.

      Very interesting. I once gave away an Estwing hatchet and I still regret it.

    That Malco possibly made by Estwing. Estwing is known for forged hammers and hatchets with a 1 peice head stacked leather handle.

      There is some info on the web that backs you up on the Estwing connection. Thanks for the tip.

    Possibly lignum vitae. It's a known dense wood for mallet to drive chisels.

      Very cool. Thanks

      That’s my first guess, too. Stanley made a big wood number 12 mallet out of lignum vitae. Super dense and heavy!

      The only way to tell for sure is to sand the end grain to at least 400 grit and take a macro pic of it. The details give many clues to the species.

    Hiya, long time no talk as it's hard for me to find time on the computer to leave a comment (I mostly view YT on the television app which is great for viewing but no comments 😞)
    Congrats on the purchases! You got some really decent stuff in this lot, best deal has gotta be the early Stanley router given what they've been going for in recent years!! Very serendipitous that you stumbled upon a decent rip saw given the recently identified need for one 🙂Yes that's a Disston. Given the handle wood (beech) and the style of the medallion it's late 40s to early 50s. If the medallion is 1" it's pre-1953 if the Disstonian Institute info is dead-on accurate. 71-77 years old!
    Rips are super easy to sharpen (as long as you have a file large enough once you get to teeth this big) so i hope it performs well for you. It does look like your saw has a fairly aggressive rake so I'm guessing it'll be a beast even if it's not sub-5 TPI.
    Three things I really wanted to comment on, Carver's mallet first. I see someone beat me to it, lignum vitae for the head is indeed the first thought. If it's _much_ heavier than you'd expect for the size and ridiculously hard (completely impossible to mark with a fingernail) then I'd be 90% confident in a lignum ID, and it does have the characteristic look. Can't beat the price 😲Total steal for a dollar, I hate you. BTW gotta say also, your hickory mallet looks really nicely done!
    The no-name backsaw, I'd bet that doesn't have a taper in the blade but instead has shifted lower into the folded back near the toe. There's no need to lever the spine off and try to rectify this if the saw plate is straight, although personally I do find backsaws way easier to use if the back is parallel to the tooth line.
    And nice dividers! I think I have enough dividers already for the amount of work I do but for five bucks I'd have jumped on those, love the look of them and that case would just be a nice bonus.

    The router plane is a 71 1/2, not a 7 1/2. Oops.

  • @JamesSmith-su3oz
    @JamesSmith-su3oz 8 місяців тому +1

    You know you are so lucky, a 71 1/2 router is like $80ish with no cutter. You need to look for a stanley no. 80 scraper or a no. 151 spokeshave to add to your collection. Great finds.

    The missing horn absolutely DOES affect the functionality of the saw.The lower horn allows you to take the weight off of the toe to accurately start the cut. Especially critical on a joinery saw. Unless you are prepared to replace the horn, never buy a saw with a damaged or missing horn. This video explains it very well.

    Malco makes a lot of professional quality sheet metal tools. They are very well known in the trades. This hammer was likely made by Estwing and sold by Malco.

    Big saw looks like Disston d8, older than the 50's. I have an Akins just like that but restored and it is a good saw too. You really made out good on many of these items and I might add I hate you.

    • @NotanExpert-Woodworking
      @NotanExpert-Woodworking  8 місяців тому

      Thanks. I'll head over to the disstonian institute and check it out.

      Good call. It does appear to be a d8. The handle has flecks like beech, so that's post 1947. Full size saw - 26" with 13/16" medallion so that probably means 1953-1955. Should clean up nicely

    That plane at the end, is a plow plane. Might be a miller's patent, but I'd look it up to reference it.

    • @NotanExpert-Woodworking
      @NotanExpert-Woodworking  8 місяців тому +1

      Great tip. A quick search shows the Stanley #41 Millers Patent. I don't know what the two big "cams" are. Maybe they go to something else.

    • @tungsten_carbide
      @tungsten_carbide 8 місяців тому

      @@NotanExpert-Woodworking I was going to opine that the two "cam" things look like they could be from something else. Other than not having seen anything like them for a plough plane they didn't look like they fit the rods, and surely they'd be a better sliding fit if that's what they were intended to slide on?

    Hi,
    How much would you have to have for the heavy mallet you purchased for a dollar? Just like the looks of it?

      Right now I'm not selling any of my finds. I'm still in the "accumulation" phase.
